NFL Sunday Ticket was first launched back in 1994, giving football fans unique access to any game they wanted to watch. It has become a massive streaming service that millions have taken advantage of each season, only many have long been upset with the fact that DirecTV is the only company that offers the service. This is due to an exclusive agreement with the NFL.

In 2023, that will be changing, with the current DirecTV contract expiring at the end of the 2022 football year.

This has sparked a whirlwind of bidders, including everyone from Amazon, to Apple, Disney, ESPN, Google, and YouTube TV, all tossing their hats in the ring for the most attractive NFL streaming service available.

It appears we’re finally reaching a conclusion after months of negotiations between the NFL and the various streaming platforms. For those looking for plans while they get an extra workout in on their exercise bike next season, you might have to add another subscription service to the pile.

According to Joe Flint of The Wall Street Journal, YouTube TV is in “advanced talks” with the league to obtain exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. And a contract agreement could be reached as early as Wednesday.

Yet there are complications, as the NFL owners are required to agree and approve such media rights agreements. But then again, with rumors that the NFL is seeking an amount nearing $2.5 billion per season, getting the owners on board with an influx of cash flow shouldn’t be an issue at all.

It’s been said that DirecTV currently pays roughly $1.5 billion per season, so if the NFL can get YouTube TV to meet their asking price, it would be a huge boost. This increased revenue would go toward a number of things, including leading to a larger salary cap. But really, this new Sunday Ticket agreement would be a huge win for the fans as long as it’s run smoothly.

YouTube TV currently costs $64.99 per month, and Sunday Ticket would simply be another add-on option for subscribers to tune into. It’s safe to say if YouTube TV can secure the NFL’s exclusive rights, their number of subscribers would spike to the moon.

Yeah this is not the best news for NFL revenues. ESPN/Disney pulled out a while ago, Apple pulled out last week. There is a lot riding on this deal, its hard to believe its about to expire and hasnt been replaced yet

I think it’s stupid that it has to go through any specific cable entity. You should be able to buy it direct through the NFL and have the ability to stream it on your own specific wifi. It eliminates password sharing. I don’t have the need for cable. I don’t want to pay an additional $65/mo on top of the cost of Sunday ticket. C’mon NFL. Cut out the middle man and just go direct!

I watch all the games with NFL Game Pass. So they do this already, no?

I think this is the offering for those who have other services to piggyback on so the bundling saves a little from standalone Game Pass.

I’m cutting the cord in the next few weeks and was deciding between a few streaming options and YouTube was the frontrunner. This might be the proverbial straw..

Well, that's what's called supply and demand
The NFL doesnt want to go direct, they want the revenue from a host service

They already have that currently. The problem is Monday Night Football which the majority are on ESPN. So I have to buy sling, for one game a week. I doubt youtube will have MNF as a standalone on the ticket, so i'll have to end up buying the main tv regardless. Stupid.

It would be nice, but, I doubt it.
A nice big package of channels for $149 a month that will include Sunday Ticket maybe.....for the first year.
They need to make that money back.

How they make the most money is the only thing that matters.
If they could direct stream individual games or teams and make as much or more money and have more control they certainly would.

I've been using YoutubeTV plus a VPN on my phone to watch the Rams for two years now. You can update your location on the YoutubeTV app on your phone to SoFi, then stream on your regular internet connection on the YouTubeTV app on your TV and it'll keep your updated location.

Oh, IDK, the NFL is always about money and that is their prerogative and I understand why they are doing it.

Most of us being able to go to sports bars and actually seeing our favorite team loved it and then we could stay at home and not have to pay for beverages & food, so we loved that too. Now, we don't like paying for anything, but it's one of my few indulgences and I don't hold against a company that is involved in making it accessible.
