So, let's play a game!

You and your family just won a week's vacation anywhere in the world. Where do you go and what is on the agenda?

For me....kids are staying home. I dont wanna be slowed down to their bullshit lol.

I'm bringing my wife and we are going to Egypt.

I've been obsessed with Egyptian history. I watch all kinds of documentaries on the ancients. I remember being a small kid in school up until middle school, we had this man who would come to our school every year and give amazing slide shows about his trips. He went to Egypt one year and I fell in love.

I would HAVE to see the pyramids. I would of course want to see the sphinx. I wouldn't just wanna see the tourist shit, I wanna see some active dig sites.

Second place....Salem Mass. The history....enough said.

Honestly, my vacation would be going to Germany. I want to try all the foods, see all of the sites (I hear Stuttgart is a sister city of St. Louis, and I want to see Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, etc.), learn the history, not just the WW2 history, but the entire history. I hear that the people are extremely polite and nice.

And it doesn't hurt that I've met a couple of people online from Germany~ :D

I've been there before years ago, definitely an interesting place, I think you'll enjoy it, I would certainly like to go back sometime.

Similar with Italy/Rome. There are lot of interesting old relics from the past, but Rome was probably the first time I really felt like I turned a corner and suddenly was back in time, the way it was preserved within the modern city was very cool IMO. Plus the pizza, my goodness, when I was in Italy I swear the pizza got better and better with every place I went to.

Ended up going to a local shop in Naples, real hole in the wall dump looking really, about 3 small tables, and a man smoking in a wifebeater outside who stopped me and said "You want pizza?" Of course I said yes so he goes "Inside, sit, 20 minutes."

And then brought out this beautiful thing for €4.

Italy is good, I would love to go back there as well. Outside of Switzerland, it's probably my favourite place in continental Europe.

I’ve been to all those places bar Frankfurt. They are all great, Berlin very historic obviously. Düsseldorf is a fantastic place. I’ve been to Munich twice for the beer festival so haven’t seen too much but the festival is unbelievably good.

As for me there is a few places I’d like to go, quite fancy South Africa. Do a safari and got to Cape Town to see Table mountain as well. Other than that I’d like to go to China and see the the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army And the Galápagos Islands as well.

I'd go to 38 Bagley's Lane, Fulham, London, England. My Great Grandparents lived here in the early 1900's. I would also go to several old Churches in London where vital records are kept, because I am a geneologist. Then I'd slink over to Bavaria for Octoberfest and have an amazing, huge stein of beer or two. I'd finish by taking a trans Atlantic journey back to New York aboard Titanic II when she is finished. This Titanic is supposed to be an exact replica of the original, except with more life boats!

That's great. I'm a dedicated amatuer geneaologist, I have found about 6000 people for my tree, stored on Ancestry.com. I am tempted to apply ay Ancestry for a job as a researcher, but the work is mostly located in Utah and I live in Kansas. and it's not easy for me to move. I received a couple of History degrees at University not too long ago, so it's a shame that I don't live closer. For whom did you work as a geneologist? I think I would love finding breakthroughs for those stuck in their research, because I have enjoyed doing it for free for extended family members.
YES, I would vist you and other Rams fans in the UK. I picked that address in Fulham because my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother lived with his family in that house/apartment before "sailing" to America on the RMS Majestic in 1924. His father, my Great-Great Grandfather lived there as well until his death in 1915. I believe the place still exists because I discovered a picture on google earth that showed a pretty old building at that address. Anyway...Do you live in London?

I live in Upminster Essex, but it can be classed as Greater London. It’s in the London Borough of Havering and it’s on the underground but the furthest east on the District Line. I worked for a company called Title Research. They were based in London but are now in Bristol I think. We would trace the deceaseds next of kin when they had died and not left a will. We’d then charge a fee for for the work we did. When I first started a couple of newspapers would print ads on a Thursday asking for the next of kin to come forward for a deceased’s estate. We’d get in the office at the crack of dawn and start researching the tree. Other companies would be doing the same so we’d be racing against them, was great fun. I’d often get sent out to a registry office somewhere to do a local search. In those days the searches were all done in either in the local registry offices, the office for National statistics or on a microfiche in the office!! I’m sure it’s a bit more sophisticated now. My boss was married to Liz Hurleys sister, when Hugh Grant got a blowie from that Desiree bird he flew back to London wearing a title research cap ha ha!! I left after 11 months and went travelling in Australia for a year. Bit of a shame really as it’s the best job I’ve done and now I work in shitty insurance. Anyway sorry for rattling on and hijacking the thread!!

Lol that some awesome ass stories! You just made it that much more appealing to go! Man I can’t even imagine being in the midst of all that history and culture and thinking of the millions that have passed through those paths the last 2000+ years

You should definitely give it a go, if you go during the off season (not summer) you'll avoid the heavier crowds, makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Yeah that’ll be my plan, I f’n hate crowds and I didn’t think I had any PTSD signs for the most part but when I’m in a crowded place standing still i start getting anxiety and craziness now, something I’ve never had before. I shrink says it’s linked to the PTSD shit :eyeroll:

I thought it was the signs of a stroke at first. Lol

Bucket list is African safari. Needs to be in an isolated lodge that when you wake up, the window opens up a panoramic view of the savannah.

Would love to tour New Zealand, have family there in Christchurch and always thought the place was beautiful.

Also tied with Scotland, something about the hills, alcohol, castles, and people just seems very inviting to me and think I'd thoroughly enjoy a tour around it.

I'm in the same boat, I am not a fan of crowds at all, so anytime I can avoid them I can. I have a nice healthy mix of some PTSD issues with crowds and ADHD which will give me anxiety at times, so if I don't take my meds I'm absolutely miserable in them. Luckily Italy doesn't get too bad weather wise (at least compared to Ireland) so during off season it can still be nice, even nicer really because it's not too hot then.

I ate so much when I was there, and the prices were all really good, Italy is one of the cheaper countries, especially if you go a few blocks off the tourist areas. Even in the tourist areas, I ordered a pizza for €7 and it was still the size of an extra large in America, huge fecker. Naples probably had the best, but that's apparently where it was invented, so that doesn't hurt, but really all of it was so good. I kept trying new places and it just got better and better every time. The only thing is many of them closed down in the middle of the day, they would open for lunch, close down and then reopen for dinner, so if you decide to skip lunch and get hungry around 3 or 4 you can sometimes be SOL.

Although that's when I'd just dip into a gelato shop and indulge myself there. Always an abundance of sweets in Italy, always near the historical landmarks as well, so you wont have to go far.

Dude, you were the one telling me about living on the island in Ireland? I recently hired a firm to get Irish citizenship through my grandmother. I couldn’t remember who it was but now I do! Lol Working on it right now, need to find documents etc. Are you an Irish citizen? If so how long did it take? Your story inspired me to pursue this! Lol

Shit I prefer the off beaten paths wherever I go, I like to do my own thing, especially when the crowds are there. I want to hopefully take a tour with all the pieces in Rome and Venice with the museums as well.

Need to visit the Altar of peace as I have a unique connection with it.
