USA will be at full strength vs Belgium! Gonna be an epic game. If USA wins, that will be another huge step in the growth of this sport here.
Poch has done a great job with these boys. They're all on one sheet of music, they work hard, and they've been consistently good in their passing. It's fantastic to watch.

I don't think we're gonna beat Belgium. But I think we're gonna give those fuckers all they can handle.

Been watching the espanol (Telemundo) feed on Peacock TV. It's beautiful. Only thing I hear is the way they call gooooooooooooal. :laugh1:

I find it interesting that the playing surface for this game in Mexico looks outstanding. And that's after they just had a storm as well. Seem to remember that not being the case when the NFL scheduled a game down there...

I did not see that result coming at all. Congrats to England best of luck vs Norway.

In my family/friends WC bracket I picked England to knock off Mexico and Norway to upset Brazil... :sunglasses:

Haaland is a goal scoring monster.

And what a freaking battle in that game at Azteca.

Mora messed up on England's second goal, but damn I think that kid is going to be special. He reminds me so much of Iniesta who was hands down one of my favorite players to watch.

I wonder if England will try to talk FIFA into suspending orb reducing the red card for Quansah. Maybe I missed something (was watching via Telemundo), but looked like the ball was cleanly tackled and then follow through made contact with the opponent’s ankle.

This seems more aligned from my perspective with a yellow card for reckless or a dangerous play. It seems FIFA may not have learned from the NFL’s use of instant replay.

Disagree about it being a "stupid rule." Soccer can be a violent sport, and in instances where a player plays recklessly in a way that can seriously injure an opponent, it's necessary to have the red card rule to eject that player and punish him significantly.

Did the ref screw up in how the rule was applied to Balogun? Yes, most think it was a shitty call because it's pretty clear there was no intent and the bodies were in an awkward position. But hey, as we all know, there are tons of shitty calls in the NFL... and you don't stop watching football, right?

Soccer has its problems (consistently low scoring is my biggest gripe) but the red card rule is important to maintain the integrity of the game.
I agree it can be violent. So maybe I should say it was a stupid call....is that better? :)

I have been watching NFL my entire life, soccer is new to me in terms of watching and being vested. So for a new viewer little things mean a lot. Offside when you are 10 yards away from the goal are frustrating as well. I know its a good rule and needs to be there but worrying about offsides on every goal is not great from a casual observer who is enjoying all these games.

You lost me on integrity of the game though. As you said above it was a shitty call and clear there was no intent. When the consequences are what they are in the largest tournament there should be some type of appeals process immediately after the game. For a ref to have that kind of power on one call could change the entire tournament feels like a lot of room for malicious behavior.

That should of been changed immediately not 24 hours before the match. It looks worse now worldwide cause politics got involved. I dont fully understand red card rules, but it feels like if teams had an appeals process and not allow 1 singular official to have that kind of power. Who is maintaining the integrity of the officials?

Not arguing here either, just getting into this tournament and expressing frustration. Learning more as I read through these other comments as well.

Frankly I agree with all of your points. Soccer can and should be a beautiful game, but I wish they would modernize it faster.

I agree with you that the red card rule is inconsistently applied, and the appeals process should be much better. I also agree with you regarding offsides-- I personally think it should be tweaked to encourage more offense. The new VAR technology has helped a ton in how it is called though-- the system seems pretty darn accurate.

Here's hoping that Americans can embrace this international sport. It's an exciting game with great tactics and unbelievable athleticism. But there are definitely rules that can be improved.

I love that people like you are at least trying to invest a little effort.
Being a fan of a sport usually come from watching with your family or playing the sport and continuing to be interested in that sport even after playing.

I also love that you are sharing what it is that bothers you as it is likely what other take issue with.

The red card process will always be a point of contention I played my son played and it is still a very controversial process
I want to note that The VAR process is fairly new so they are working to improve it.

Another thing that has been misrepresented a bit is that the ref made no call so he didn’t make the wrong red card call on the field
VAR decided it needed to be looked at, they did so and sent the ref their findings stills etc once the ref saw those his hands were tied.
FIFA also loos at these calls after the game and makes a further determination, leave as is, extend suspension or repeal suspension

The process should not have taken so long I 100 agree

Timing and optics are terrible

I think the offside rule is almost perfect, I love the tracking system and their ability to get it right per letter of the law so fast.
There has been discussion about changing how much of and which body parts come into play for offside to be called.

I personally think the distance from goal is unfortunately just a necessary part of the rule that once the casual observer understands its impact will agree it is needed the way it is.

Thanks for sharing more details here. What is VAR? Not familiar with that. I agree with the offside thing, I get it, understand it as a dude i work with is a huge soccer guy and after explaining it for 2 hours it sunk in. Agree now that I understand it, just so frustrating that after every goal I have to worry about it and most times i dont recognize a play if offsides.....does that make sense? I can see with my eyes during a play in hockey if its offside or not typically, but with soccer I still get confused cause i cant identify it. I actually thought the 3rd goal England scored last night was offside, so I am all over the place on that. I dont have a solution only complaints about it lol

VAR is Video Assisted Replay. A lot like NFL challenges but it's not initiated by the teams it's by the officials in the VAR booth. Can upgrade fouls to yellow cards or even yellow cards to red cards. They check offsides, hand balls and if something is a penalty or not mostly but there are other things. It's just as maddening as NFL challenges in most leagues TBH but it's a better system IMO especially when you get the people running the officials on TV on Tuesday night recapping all the blown or bad calls :D

VAR = video assistant referee
It is the review process in the booth with the 3 officials.

Maybe think of the offside process like a TD catch where they seem to need to review it at an almost unimaginably high rate.

If you find the sport interesting at all maybe pick a club related to something of interest to you. Could your nationality or place you have visited, color of the kit lol or anything else and follow them.

Champions league is the highest level of club play in my and Mosts opinion

It is a tournament somewhat like the World Cup where the top qualifying clubs compete for European supremacy

Premier League-England
La Liga - Spain
League 1 France
Bundasliga - Germany
Serie A - Italy
There are more but these are arguably ( not really lol ) the top 5

This tournament takes place while these leagues are also playing their league seasons so they are battling for league supremacy and European supremacy concurrently.

Other than the United States you are watching some of the best athletes in the world battling within small margins, where a goal has the highest currency of any or the major sports.

A soccer goal is like Bitcoin
A football TD Etherium
An NBA basket Doge coin lol

I was typing my comment as you posted (no intent to step on your great comment)

I hope this is all helping you @Boston Ram

It is a truly beautiful sport but you have to love the play and get the reward from the scoring. If scoring is the only real point of interest it can test your patience but I like that a score can happen anytime as possession is always being contested.

Excellent write up on VAR!
