I know it’s not a sexy pick. But... I am very happy and excited for Sloman. (y)

Never underestimate a quality kicker...

I hear ya, i think we'll miss the luxury of getting 3 points from a mile out, but myself i'd prefer a kicker who is nails in the 30-45 yd range consistently.

IMO, the Rams want a kicker that is more accurate, however, Sloman does have the ability to kick long as he's hit 61 yarders....Overall from leg strength of the three, Hajrullahu has the strongest leg, however, MacGinnis & Sloman can hit 50 yard kicks, but it was nice having a kicker like Zuerlein that had the ability to get there from 59 yards or so.

He may lose the heavy leg pads in the NFL, but some angles it looks like we drafted Rob Havenstein, K.

Sam doesn't get cheated at the table and IMO, he might need to do more push ups...Pushing himself up from the table, however, after watching him totally by accident in the MAC Championship game, again I would have turned it off, but an Ohio team was in it...I came away impressed by a couple of things with Sloman.

His demeanor....Not high, nor low, even kicking four field goals and the last one to seal the victory, his reaction was the same each and every time, stone faced and just focused for the kickoff. Before his senior year, he was 0-5 from 50, but then really improved and did kick in bad weather.

I originally didn't think the Rams would draft a kicker after the signing of Lirim Hajrullahu & Austin MacGinnis even though I liked Sloman, but once the Rams traded down in the 4th round & added two seventh round picks from Houston, I knew they were going to draft a kicker and I knew it would be Sloman.

In fact watching the wrap up of the draft on therams.com...They had Johnny Hekker on during the Sloman pick and Hekker stated the Rams wanted to bring in 3 kickers to battle it out, my concern is, they might not get a fair shot as the Pandemic might hamper training camp and preseason.

At this point, if I would bet on one of the three, it would be Austin MacGinnis. As MacGinnis was very accurate in college and has continued to refine his craft and kicked extremely well in both the Alliance football league and the XFL. Hajrullahu might have the strongest leg, but he should, he's older turning 30 this year, but there is much to like about Sloman as nothing seems to phase him and I love the Miami of Ohio connection with McVay.

I know some of the draftniks don't waste their time on kickers, however, all of us understand how important a kicker is and now the Rams have a perfect mix IMO. They have a young kicker that has improved his craft and been successful in other venues like MacGinnis. They have signed the best kicker in the CFL in Lirim Hajrullahu and now they drafted somebody they liked and had the best year of any kicker in 2019 in Sam Sloman, so let the battle begin.

I’ll go with the rookie.

I really like Sloman as I posted about, however, I also feel Austin MacGinnis has an excellent opportunity as he was very accurate in college and he was 9-11 in the Alliance League & 10-10 in the XFL....Should be a great competition.

Sloman embraces opportunity with Rams

With Greg Zuerlein signing the Dallas Cowboys, the Rams are in need of a new starting kicker.

Los Angeles already has two candidates following the March signings of former XFL kicker Austin MacGinnis and former CFL kicker Lirim Hajrullahu.

It added a third on Saturday with the selection of Miami (Ohio)'s Samuel Sloman during the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

"I mean, it meant everything," Sloman said on a video conference Saturday. "Everybody hopes to get their name called. Through this process, we talked about putting ourselves in the best situation and the Rams were one of those teams. It just meant the world. I'm excited for the opportunity to come in and compete for a wide-open job. I'm excited for that."

Initially, Sloman was prepared for the prospect of going undrafted. The additions of MacGinnis and Hajrullahu made him think the Rams would not be interested in him come draft weekend.

"(Rams Special teams coordinator John Bonamego) was up front and honest with me the whole time," Sloman said. "So, I was kind of thinking free agency and then they started trading back a little bit and I thought there might have been a chance there."

Both the Rams organization and the city of Los Angeles are familiar to Sloman.

Rams head coach Sean McVay is also a Miami (Ohio) alum. Sloman also came out for the 2018 Rose Bowl game between Georgia and Oklahoma.

"That was the only time I've been there," Sloman said. "I didn't really go around the city too, too much. I was out there for two days. I just know that the weather is a lot better there than it is here, which I'm excited about. I know there's always a lot going on there, which is pretty cool."

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of public spaces throughout the country, it hasn't impacted Sloman's preparation too much. He is still able to practice at his school's field, and has gym access that allows him to do private workouts.

All of it will go into competing for the starting kicker job. Sloman said he doesn't think Zuerlein's successful eight-year run with the franchise creates added pressure for him.

"I just got to go out there and do my job," Sloman said. "Greg Zuerlein was a lot of fun to watch, I love watching him kick the ball. So, I think it's pretty cool to get the opportunity to try follow in his footsteps."
