I didn't pay much attention to the draft this year, but how come more scouts were not gushing about how insane this kid's advanced statistics were? The longest pass he gave up all season was 12 yards and only gave up 18 catches and 3 first downs on 60 targets and almost 600 coverage snaps his entire career?? Never allowed more than two catches in a game??? WTH that's INSANE!

He's about the average size for a CB and extremely athletic so it had nothing to do with physical limiatations.. I get that he doesn't have much experience in zone coverage but that doesn't mean he's not capable in that area, he just hasn't done it much.

I don't know much about CBs but he looked extremely sticky on tape, my only complaint and really the only complaint I've seen from anyone else is that he can get a bit grabby. This kid could be Revis-esque and everyone else might have dropped the ball, but we'll have to wait and see.

NFL Rookies Who Won't Start but Definitely Should
Brent Sobleski

Not every early-round pick will start as a rookie. Those who think otherwise have out-of-whack expectations. Some individuals take time to adjust to the professional game. Others' paths toward starting aren't given.

Patience is needed for the first category. The latter is interesting because they could become key contributors early in their careers despite not breaking into starting lineups.

Starter is a relative term anyhow. Most still frame the term as the traditional 11 spots that date back decades.

But the game continues to change. Nickel corners and slot receivers are every bit as much starters today as fullbacks and third linebackers used to be. Defensive sub-packages allow more players to get on the field over the course of games.

Opportunities dictate a player's situationin many instances. What if they didn't?

CB David Long, Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams drafted the best all-around cornerback in this year's class with the 79th overall pick. Seriously.

Long allowed a 24.3 career passer rating into his coverage, according to Pro Football Focus. He also finished his final season on campus with the lowest reception rate of any draft-eligible cornerback. Long is fast (4.45-second 40-yard dash), athletic and fantastic with route anticipation.

But he lacks length. The 5'11" cornerback has sub-31-inch arms. He's also stuck behind a settled cornerback rotation of Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and Nickell Robey-Coleman.

"Anybody who is a Rams fan knows that I have a very talented position group," cornerbacks coach Aubrey Pleasant said, per the Detroit Free Press' Orion Sang, "and you could say that the rich have gotten richer."

"[Long is] in a position where he can grow, he can be patient."

Also behind Troy Hill, Long is, at best, the fifth cornerback on the Rams' depth chart.

Even so, Long is an aggressive corner with exceptional man-coverage skills—which should fit in quite nicely with Wade Phillips' defensive scheme. Peters disappointed last season and enters the final year of his rookie deal. Talib is 33 years old with only one year remaining on his current contract.

Long could easily work his way into the rotation and supplant one of the veterans if he's not performing to expected levels.

CB David Long Jr., Los Angeles Rams

One of PFF's pre-draft favorites, Rams cornerback David Long did a great job against the Cardinals' passing attack in Week 13, forcing an incompletion on his single target of the game. He ended the game having allowed a passer rating of just 39.6.

David Long, Todd Gurley make PFF's Week 13 Team of the Week

Todd Gurley continues to run the ball well for the Rams, racking up 95 yards on just 19 carries against the Cardinals on Sunday. He has at least 73 yards rushing in three of his last four games and has averaged 4.63 yards per carry in that stretch.
David Long Jr. hasn’t gotten much playing time as a rookie this season, but he was great against the Cardinals in Week 13, too. He played 27 snaps, which nearly equaled his total in the previous 11 games combined, and did a nice job in coverage. Long made two tackles and had one pass defensed in the game.

Both Gurley and Long earned spots on Pro Football Focus’ Team of the Week for this past slate of games. Gurley’s 90.6 overall grade was the best of any running back in Week 13, while Long’s 79.4 was the second-best among corners.
Here’s what was said about Gurley:
It’s been a quiet year for Gurley, but Week 13 did wonders for his season-long outlook. Tasked with 19 carries against the Arizona Cardinals, Gurley racked up 95 rushing yards, 61 rushing yards after contact, one touchdown, four additional first downs and three forced missed tackles. As if that wasn’t enough, he also took his lone pass target of the day 22 yards after the catch for a touchdown.
And what PFF wrote about Long’s performance.
One of PFF’s pre-draft favorites, Rams cornerback David Long did a great job against the Cardinals’ passing attack in Week 13, forcing an incompletion on his single target of the game. He ended the game having allowed a passer rating of just 39.6.
Long is a big part of the Rams’ plans in 2020 and beyond, and could very well be a starter next season opposite Jalen Ramsey. As a third-round pick this year, he hasn’t gotten on the field much, but that could change as the coaching staff gains more trust in him.

I’m all for David Long becoming a great player ‘n all...

But for PFF to be raving about him based on ONE target on Sunday? And giving him a “grade” of 79.4?

IMHO there are “good” stats and “bad” stats. “Bad” stats make bold statements based on very little data.

Edit: just repeating ONE data point in a different way doesn’t mean there’s magically “more data”. Yes, if a QB throws one incomplete pass, his passer rating is 39.6. Saying Long also “held the QB to a passer rating of 39.6” is ridiculously misleading based on that ONE incompletion. Sheesh!

It’s also pointing out his coverage was so good that Murray only went his way once. Yes he only played 27 snaps but that means for 26 plays he took one WR out of the game. I’m the first one to take pff with a grain of salt but Long clearly was effective last week.

Pff looks at more than targets. They look at coverage all together. So if a receiver is so blanketed that the qb can't go to him, credit goes to the DB

Long almost had his first pick as well, I thought he looked pretty good. His time has been really limited, only about 60 snaps, in which he’s been thrown to 6 times. He’s allowed 4 completions for about 44 yards... That’s about the same completion percentage as Marcus Peters, but for about 5 less yards on average per completion... Which is not bad at all for a rookie who’s only dressed for 6 games and taken defensive snaps in 4 of them.

Loved seeing him out there. Get these rookies play time so we have a better idea what we have going into the offseason. We will have to rely on rookies and second year players to get back on the super bowl track the next few years.

Exactly. While I'm not advocating playing younguns at the cost of a game, I do want to see them get more time so the Rams know what they have, and where to throw resources during the offseason. Long is basically ready, at least to be a nice backup and possibly a starter next season. Let's get him more experience, instead of playing the usual cast who might be decent, but nothing better.

Cool. Good point. Yeah, I’m sure PFF looks at all the snaps, and I hope Long did well. Just seems weird to anoint Long as “second best in the NFL” on Sunday based on only 27 snaps in his first real outing.

I kept an eye on Long in preseason and he looked totally lost. However, I was really high on the pick based on Long’s ridiculously good pass defense stats while at Michigan. Like everyone else here, I’d love it if Long can adjust to the NFL and become a legit #2 corner opposite Ramsey.

so you didn’t watch The Rams game, but have an opinion that PFF is not putting up solid stats on David Longs play ??
I agree that he was not playing at a top level during training camp(preseason), but
then again PFF had him mist as there top cover CB from the draft. My guessing is there formula is pretty consistent. What’s an example of them being wrong with a CB ??

yes - I guess Long Island would mean he can shut down a WR & stay on an island without any help ?? My opinion is limited as well, but why were the Cardinals throwing to Ramsey’s side ??
Rumor was Tyler Rapp had a standout game & an INT ??

Irritates me so badly to see 4x Saints players listed. And much as I hate PFF though I do have to agree they're playing very well on defense this year. I've never liked Dennis Allen but find myself reconsidering my opinion of him.

Would members here have any issues if the Wade's 2020 Defensive backfield looked like this?
CB- Jalen Ramsey/ Adonis Alexander
CB- David Long/ Troy Hill
NK- Darious Williams/ Dont'e Deayon

Saf- Taylor Rapp/ Jake Gervase
Saf- John Johnson/ Nick Scott

Snead decides to go for major salary cap relief with the trade of CB Nickell Robey-Coleman that produces $4.5 million of cap $$$ & procured draft selection. Release of 35 yr old Safety Eric Weddle for a cap savings of $4.3 million. Total near $9 million back into 2020 cap funds. In order to be able to entice 38 yr old Andrew Whitworth to return for one more season to start @ his old post until Joseph Noteboom 100 % healthy.
