No, the jury is still out on him. It just means the cost they spent to get a starting QB and a backup QB is the same regardless of which one actually starts.

If Brock Purdy isn't the answer and they have to go take another swing for a QB, then we can say the Lance move was a waste.

Obviously they whiffed on Lance but that trade hasn't hurt them. They made a trade for a high pick for a starter and picked a 7th round flyer for a back up QB. They now have a starting QB and a backup QB. The fact that their names are different doesn't mean the cost was different.

Very true. Their approach is a solid run game and intermediate passing. And that is totally dependent on a healthy O line. Last year their starters logged 17, 17, 16, 16 and 14 starts. 2021, 17, 17, 17, 15 and 8. 2020, 16, 16, 16, 14 and 5. They haven't had injury issues to more than 1 position on the OL. They're due.

But upon further review, they went 4-12 with only 1 game lost to injury on the O line in 2018. Garappolo missed 13 games. They went 6-10 in 2020 when Garappolo missed 10 games. So maybe they depend on the QB a little more than we credit them?

This Lance trade reminds me when the Rams traded for Tommy Maddox yrs ago right before final cuts at the end of the pre-season.

Maddox was a surprise 1st round pick by the Broncos while they still had Elway. So they decided to trade him after a few yrs and I believe Knox traded a 4th for him.

He didn't do anything here and eventually ended up in Pittsburgh and played a few yrs with them with some moderate success.

I like Purdy and he is an amazing find in the 7th.

But it'll take them a while to get where they could have been with those first round picks.

I certainly don't think it bodes well for them - if just from a structure point of view.

What I think is interesting is that they now have Mr. Irrelevant (150 yards/game) as their starter after Tommy John surgery with their back-up being someone just above a bust considering his draft position.

I realize the common wisdom is that any QB can succeed with that roster and in Rat Boy's system and with that defense but I'm not so sure. Dweebo is a question mark to me. Aiyuk needs someone to get him the ball downfield. Kittle is going to get his 700 yards but also needs someone to get him the ball downfield to make his splash plays. I don't wish injury on any player but McCaffrey isn't exactly a lock to finish the season. Add in that their highly drafted kicker is already injured, they have contract issues with their best defender, and they have punks in Warner and Greenlaw, plus they lost Ebukam, etc...

If they start out slow, like they can do many times, I wouldn't be surprised if the wheels fall off the train.

I disagreed with THAT comment. Yesterday's Trey Lance trade did NOT change the landscape of the Division.

Personally, I would be surprised if the 'wheels fall off-the-train'. However, I hope they do. In fact, I hope the wheels fall-off as the 49ers' Train is crossing a bridge between two high mountains ... and the Train falls a thousand feet to the jagged rocks below ... and then explodes. I would be OK with that!

That is if you believe in Purdy that much. I don't buy him as a franchise QB or a game changer. So no... IMO Purdy doesn't come close to offsetting the whiff. If Purdy ends up being the next Tom Brady (puked a little in my mouth), then .... Lance who? But otherwise, it hurts them by not only not having their franchise QB but the picks it cost them.

I guess that depends. We've seen Rat Boy take a "loaded roster" and go 6-10. He seems to be kind of unlikeable. That Lance issue has to be a dark cloud. It could create further negative vibes.
