I've been saying this for months, it's not news to me. The Cards are the Cards enough said. The Niners will take a step back this season. Purdy will come back to reality as the young inexperienced player he in reality is. The only real threat in the division are the Seahawks. But I'm not convinced their defense has improved that much. I think like a lot of teams rebuilding they will suffer from depth issues and in many ways have the same inexperience issues the Rams have.
The Rams have the best QB and WR in the division. They have a damn good RB in Akers and a very good TE. Jefferson has proved himself a solid #2 WR and now they have Puka and an emerging Atwell. All this behind an improved OL. The bottom line is that the Rams have the best offense in the NFCW and one of the best in the NFC period.
If the defense can simply play average this is a playoff team. If the defense emerges as a top 10 unit they are a Lombardi contender. The biggest impediment to this defense is how Morris plays his guys. If he gets out of Pleasant's way and allow him to play the secondary aggressively and the best players on the roster and not just Raheem's buddies, this team can be within the top 15 this year. If they are the Rams are a contender this year.
I expect their starting CBs will be Durant and Tomlinson with Witherspoon and Rochell as the second rotation. Starting safeties will be Johnson and Fuller with Lake as their #3 safety. In nickel I expect Tomlinson to drop into the SCB position to be replaced by Rochell or Witherspoon on the outside. If they play 3 safeties they should play Quentin Lake as he has better speed than Fuller.
When he was with Staley, Aubrey played the DBs in a read and anticipate style allowing them to jump the routes at the break. If he is allowed to play them that way again this secondary is good enough to surprise people. I'm not too worried about Witherspoon because if they play a double high concept he will be covered over the top. Staley played a quarters concept with a man component. It will be interesting if Aubrey plays this secondary the same. He played an awful lot of man coverages in preseason to see who and who can't play that style. Durant and Tomlinson definitely can. Rochell can but it was clear he didn't develop along those lines under Morris so he will take longer to round into form. Witherspoon has the athleticism to play in man coverage. His problem is inconsistent technique. His lapses result in breakdowns in his coverage. If Pleasant can correct that, Witherspoon could be a FA steal with at least 4 more good years left in him.
