Why so little talk about Karty?

Someone with more time on their hands please get actual data on this thing. Is Karty actually holding the ball too long? Because what I see is lots of blocked kicks. Generally, that is not the kicker's fault. But just like a QB hanging out too long in the pocket, it's possible Karty is taking too long to kick it. But I don't want to go blaming players without ACTUAL data first.

Good read:

“It’s going to cost us — it’s cost us already,” McVay said. “It’s been a momentum killer. It does take the air out of our sails. Our guys have shown they can respond and overcome it. But you do have to be — the harsh and the truth of it is, is this is not sustainable to continuously go where we want to go. And that’s really, just trying to be able to get our seventh win against an excellent football team. We’re fortunate that we’ve gotten away with it. But it has cost us throughout the season. And that’s something you can’t run away from. That’s the truth.

“But what I will say is, hopefully you can appreciate and respect, is that the granular elements of why it has or hasn’t gone down, I don’t necessarily think this is the appropriate time to acknowledge that. I don’t believe in putting anybody out there. And it does fall back on, it is my responsibility to figure it out. And I thought we were trending in the right direction, and today was a step back. And that’s disappointing and that’s unfortunate.”

So, how will McVay go about evaluating the kicking game?

“It’s about acknowledging the totality of where the issues are,” McVay said. “And, again, I don’t think this is the venue or the setting to be able to blame anybody. That’s never what I believe. But we’ve got to be able to get it fixed. And it is, it truly takes all 11. And there are some instances that I could go in depth of what occurred, but that doesn’t move us forward in the right way.

“Ultimately, I’ve got to be able to figure out, alright, collectively, with our coaches, let’s address the issues, let’s see what the possible solutions are, and we go from there.”

One ostensible solution is that L.A. could try out kickers. But from the way McVay talked about it, he doesn’t see Karty as the underlying issue.

“What I would say is, I’ve got confidence in Josh,” McVay said. “There’s a lot of layers to it and we’ll evaluate all parts of it. And so, I think no different than when you’re throwing interceptions or whatever it is, I think that naturally, the narrative shifts toward the kicker and that might not always be the case.”

Chase Blackburn has been the Rams’ special teams coordinator since 2023. The team hired veteran coach Ben Kotwica as assistant special teams coordinator earlier this year. He’s previously served as a coordinator for the Jets, Washington, Atlanta, and Denver.

In his second season, Karty has made just 10-of-15 field goals and 23-of-26 extra points so far in 2025.

I think Karty is going to be fine. He was solid last year. Was talk of the league with his kickoffs this year, etc.

He’s kind of been dealt a shitty hand with the kick protection this year. He’s had to deal with too much pressure. That’s gonna screw anyone up. And he’s been good, so... I want a new Special Teams Coach first. @Merlin is right we need a guy who has a winning track record with FG kicking units. This unit is not working.

Stick with Karty.

Ok, here is the field goal. He starts the process of windup way too late. After the video is still shots of kicks including the record breaker this weekend where the kicker is taking their first step before the ball even reaches the holder. What's weird is after that are two pics from two Karty field goals....

Two Karty field goals... one is from last season week 3 when he nails a game winner against Whiners with 2 seconds left. Other is yesterdays missed FG. The Whiners kick he's already made one step before the ball is even on the ground. Yesterday he doesn't begin to take a step until the ball is on the ground. Between the shit blocking on edges and around the snapper and his long wind up this season it's no wonder things are getting blocked. Idk why this has become an issue but it's a serious one that needs fixed.

Yeah, Karty could be a half a step quicker with his approach, but I can't help but notice the 2 big wiffs on the right side of our line in this one. Against the feagles, the left side was trucked by Philly's line.
THAT'S the problem , imo.
Get somebody in there who can hold some ground for a half a second more, and do the job.

Fuck me, McVay talks a lot. Try some one or two sentence answers.

When I saw some of the blocks, it seems to come from the gap where the left guard is. I would even say they went between the guard and center. Not sure if that's legal or not but that seems to be the weak spot from what I gather.

WRONG if your going by the block kick yesterday. Humpries was on the outside & barley reached out it was one of THE WORST EFFORTS I’ve ever seen from a player.

Blackburn should be FIRED imo ?

I wasn't talking about yesterday's game. I was talking about previous games. I saw the mishaps from yesterday.

And he is very disciplined. Sticks to platitudes. I love Coach but dislike listening to him at times because of that.

The dude who gives out nuggets is Les. I always focus in on his interviews.

It’s on Blackburn who is, by a long way, the weakest link on this coaching staff. The blocking on FGs, punt returns and kickoffs is below average. If there is a worse special teams unit in the league I would be amazed.

Our biggest mistake was letting Bones go who was a stud even though I can accept he went too far if he over stepped his position and called a play that upset McVay

What are the options out there? I believe Karty would be a much better player with better coaching and protection

Rams biggest weakness right now is FG/EP kicking. This needs to be addressed.
True but the punt return blocking will get Smith killed at this rate too. It’s the coaching not the players who are good players on a deep squad. We need to fire Blackburn because he’s consistently put out poor stuff this year and every year but who would we replace him with? There must be better coaches out there surely

I don't think the answer is to get rid of Karty but FIX THE DAMN BLOCKING SCHEME. It's not working. This is pro football. Kicking a 35 yard FG or extra point shouldn't be a crap shoot.
the blocking scheme has issues... but did you not see him both pull a kick severely to the left and push one to the right? in golf terms he hit two drives out of bounds in different directions.

Something isn't right with the guy.

Is Karty the biggest ST's problem? Is the FG O-line the same as the Punt O-line? Cause it sure seems like almost every single punt is almost blocked. So is the protection the issue? Or are both Karty and Evans taking to much time?

It pisses me off that we can’t have a kicker kick well for us. It was hell after Greg the Leg, and we found a guy. Let him walk, and it’s been hell again since. We all know about Dicker, the Chargers great kicker. Did yall see Lucas Havercik kick the longest field goal ever for the Packers??

Thought the same, and is interesting.Diker we have to give props for Les Snead & Scouting for coming up with these guys.’

Yeah a 68 yarder & The Rams miss a 24 yard FG ?

Karty went on a roll last season & was counted on in Big Games.Sad part is the first FG try coming off a bye week gets blocked & Mcvay doesn’t try another Kick. Maybe he made 1 ?

I really think the low kicks were a result of the first blocked kicks. It got in his head and he started rushing the kicks.
This last miss was sort of. Crazy !!

JB showed the replay & Karty had to wait a bit.He kicked behind the defender SO it didn’t get blocked.

REALLY?? No NOT at ALL!!!!

Totally different squad.Same snapper though.
