Yesterday, I watched both Week 6 and Week 12 losses to the 49ers. I was trying to find out why the 49ers own us right now. It's just to easy to say it is Shanahan even if it is true. I mean two of their six wins were against us and we won ten games last season. I think since 2017 we are 3-7 against San Fran? Here are a few of my takeaways from last years matchups.

* The 49ers crushed us in the ground game. They used a combination of pitches either going right or left that endlessly bashed us for big gains. They sprinkled in gashes up the middle, sweeps, and play actions, but those RB pitches hurt us both games. It wasn't until the second quarter of the week 12 matchup that the defense caught on. Week 6 rushing 122 yards/ Week 12 rushing 114 yards.
* Speaking of the run game, if no one is concerned with the loss of Fox and Brockers where the run game is concerned, I don't understand it. It's going to hurt us worse than I think we want to believe.
* 49ers defense covered the Rams receivers very well, and it showed in Goff's performance. Goff week 6 - 19-38-1-198 yards. Goff week 12 -19-31-2-198 yards and a fumble lost. Not exactly eye popping. We actually did pretty well on the ground both games, but the passing game could have been better. Maybe it was the play calling, but the interception on the fourth and goal in the week 6 matchup stunk.
* 49ers offense made our defense look lethargic at times. A lot of missed tackles by the linebacking corps with the running back getting into the secondary on those damn sweeps.

Why are the 49ers all over us since, what 2017?

Every ( or just about) important play that could stop or lesson their chances to complete or finalize a game Kittle gets the ball and he had shit coverage personal and also where he needed to be doubled.

It is Shanahan. He runs the Rams defense ragged. Plus he has a better offensive line across the board in run blocking. His backs do different things. Popping Mostert inside with his speed and burst was deadly. On the outside runs his receivers and tight ends are more physical blockers. Than the Rams’. I think his receivers have a bit more speed and physicality than the Rams. And Kittle loves to block. I’ve never heard a Rams TE say that. The Niners look to have a better version of the McVay/ Shanahan offense when playing the Rams.

The reason that their rushing attack works so well against the Rams’ defense is because the defense is more pass defense oriented. The Rams play lighter behind the defensive line than most teams. A lot of responsibility lies with the Defensive front and one true Inside linebacker to stop the run. That’s very difficult against a good run blocking offensive line. The Rams struggled with the Ravens similarly. I think the Titans would give them fits also. The Packers’ offense attacked similarly with great success.

They were "built" to beat us. Control the clock. Make the defense play the run every play (whether they run or not....). And make our QB make plays on time. We've usually failed in one or more of those facets every time we've played them in the Shanahan era. Even when we won in the first year, games were always close because we failed in one aspect or another.
The keys to beating them are. Make their offense play outside their comfort level (they put up a graphic in the last game where SF converted first downs regularly from a 3 and 4 or less. But no conversions from 3 and 6 or more...). Make their secondary make plays down the field. (This will open up our run game. Last year we had problems making plays downfield. Our longer passing plays were YAC induced, rather than completed downfield. I think this is where Stafford will help as Goff wanted a "clean" reception and would hesitate. Stafford will make plays based off what the play was initially meant to do...). Give Warner something to do other than play around the line of scrimmage. (The kid is good, but isn't as strong against the pass downfield. Make his cover a TE or back downfield and I think the defense becomes more average. He's the key, just like Donald is the key for us.)
Just my 2 cents.

They dont own the Rams. Its nonsense. Last 3 games could have gone either way and the 9ers just caught the breaks.
The Rams own the Seahawks and the Cards, they'll own the 9ers this year

I think the Niners own the Rams. The Rams Seahawks games are close too. But the Rams seem to be in control even in the few losses to them.

Goff was terrible against the Niners defense. They totally confused him. Maybe they owned Goff? In the first game he was 0 for 9 or something to start the game.

49er games always felt like a struggle for the Rams. Seahawk and Cardinals games always felt like a struggle for them (from a Rams fans POV)

I think “own” is a bit strong. Two of the losses over the past four matchups ended with walk off FGs.

That said, I do think we’ll fare better with Stafford at the helm and more size on the DL.

the only game they really "owned" us was at home two years ago

the rest of them games have been close... we should have won a couple of those.

They are not a good match up for us.. like grove said we are built to defend the pass - which is smart considering what the nfl is today.

The 49ners are a power running team with a physical defense. We just have different styles and their style has beat our style the last couple years.

But when it comes to the rest of the nfl they haven't beaten anyone much outside of one year.

Injuries killed them last year however.

I don't know Dieter. When I watched those two games over, it looked like we were owned. I understand what the final score looked like, but the week in the week 6 matchup, we never looked like we were even in the game, and week 12 was to a backup? 3-7 since 2017?

1. Physicality. Harped on this shit all year too. They have bullied us in the trenches and they weren't the only team to do that. All of our worst losses had that in common. Their LG also stood up very well vs Donald even some 1v1 which I found surprising and frustrating.

2. Backfield speed vs Rams ILBs. RB vs ILB is a mini-matchup in a lot of ways. Their OL strength factors in here too, but we saw teams with a backfield speed edge eat us in the run game and it ended our 2020 run in Green Bay. This is magnified by good scheme types like Shanny. Lafleur actually served it up to Staley a bit too in that playoff game by motioning the ILB assignment outside then running up the gut when they caught us in certain looks.

3. QB. Ours was a bottom third performer overall for the second consecutive season, and his outings vs SF were both bad. 9ers were able to move him off his spot and adjusted to the moving pocket McVay had used to help counter that.

4. Pass game threats. Reynolds was just as shitty as many here thought he'd be last year. Guy didn't move the bar at all. Our lack of speed can be felt in every watch-through vs SF.

Now look at our moves this offseason...

1. Physicality brought in with two new DL. Neither are great all around, but both of those guys are tough as hell to move and can shed and make stops. The Rams' defensive front overall is now looking quite stout vs the run, with good power across most of the projected room and through the rotation.

2. ILB brought in to give us a little more consistency off ball. He may not be felt this year but down the road Jones is our starter and QB of the defense.

3. QB brought in who is a seasoned vet with a great arm and a great team guy. Will prove to be one of the best Rams' moves since Marshall Faulk IMO.

4. Speed added to the eligibles group should be felt this season. Defending this offense will be a lot more difficult.

More than anything last season, they beat us at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. Despite being an inferior team overall, they had a DL that more than matched up with our OL, and their OL did good against our DL. There are other reasons, but that far and away is the #1. Better line play would have (and will) solve a lot of the problems we've had against them lately.

Kyle Shanahan is one of the best play callers in the NFL, McVay not as good, but builds a superior culture, however, on game day, IMHO, Shanahan trumps McVay, for the present.

They are strong where we are weak to a degree......
But just as McVay seems to have Petes number the same can be said for Shanny regarding McVay.
