Is Trevor Lawrence going to play on a 14 mill prove it deal like Jones is in Indy as well?
Or will he want the 55 mill per deal that he already has?
That is the sure path to NFL purgatory: paying a guy franchise QB money when they haven't shown they're an elite, franchise QB.

Vote NO on Lawrence.

Mendoza's looking like a top pick range QB. Think he's going to be off our list unless Atlanta completely implodes.

Well, if Sellers declares, along with a few others, who they feel should stay in school, declare there could be 6 or 7 guys that could go top 40 or 50. Of course McVay will be very picky and may only like a few of them. So in any event this could be the year to grab a guy who has upside.

As it pertains to handicapping or projecting the QB for McVay, he has to check specific boxes:

:helmet:First he needs to be able to stretch the field. McVay isn't a typical WCO type offensive mind in that regard. He is more of a Coryell type philosophically, who speaks WCO and uses their staples to generate first downs while valuing the vertical game. So the QB he drafts must have enough arm to hit a deep out, which eliminates some of your typical late round types as it pertains to being considered for the starting gig. I don't think he will identify one of those types who float their deep throws. The Cousins type. He's moved past that now and he said as much when they moved Goff (yes Goff has an arm but he checked down too much for McVay). That he doesn't want to live underneath.

:helmet:Second he'll go after a QB who has established an ability to run a high volume pass game. There are QBs who other WCO teams can live with, like the coaches who come off that Eagles tree, where they do a lot of read option and run/pass BS and only really throw when it's schemed up at which time it has to be accurate. Example last year would be a guy like Leonard who went to the Colts. Those types won't fit McVay. He will prefer the QBs who can, when needed, throw it all over the yard and move the chains with their accuracy and decision making. Now I know a lot of you prefer a mobile QB. And some mobile QBs can live in a high volume pass game. I just think the ones who haven't shown that won't be the QBs he has circled on his draft board.

:helmet: Third I think he'll target a QB who has that gunslinger type swagger to him. Example last year of that was Dart, year before was Penix. Guys who check those boxes above but also have that old school QB arrogance to them. That "let's go score here boys" type leadership, types who will do keg stands with the linemen. The quiet types, example from last draft being a QB like Ewers, I don't think fit the bill. Type A personality will be seen as a plus.

Looks like the Mateer train is off the tracks
Might be good for us tbh. We're probably not gonna be able to sniff any of these guys who slot high.

Correct. But I doubt he drafted Bennett to be the QB1.
They didnt draft him with the intention that he wouldnt be the eventual #1 either
The team is built with low-mid round picks who ascended to starter, no reason QB wouldnt be the same

He was drafted because they were cap broke at the time and they looked at him as a very experienced 25 yr old rookie QB that could be a $900k back up instead of paying a couple million for a back up.

McVay doesnt draft guys that he doesnt think can become a starter. They chose Bennett over other guys. Like Kobie, Young and Puka who were drafted in the same range

Precisely. Bennett has some of those things, the arrogance in the pocket for example, and represented a cheap backup possibility, but his year off threw a wrench in shit.

Bottom line though... What McVay is going to prioritize this next QB they draft will be a QB with the basic skills he requires. So I think it is likely to be a QB who is a late first round type slotting, after the freak athletes or perceived bluechips are off the board.

McShay bugs the fuck out of me. Dude does so much rambling and dissembling he's hard to listen to. Also I don't like Beck at all. He's not in the class of Mateer. McShay watches a ton of film, I'll give him that. But I just don't think he's got a good eye.
