Okay, now that we've signed Adams, Kupp is out the door for sure. My question is: What happened down the stretch that made him a non-factor? I realize he was hurt early on but came back and was doing well then...the last six games or so he was only getting a pass or two thrown his way per game. Did he really fall off that far? Was it that he couldn't get separation? I'm sure he didn't piss anyone off in the clubhouse. He had such chemistry with Stafford and Puka off the field that it's hard to believe something came between him and Stafford for Matthew not to look his way. Was it the fact that he was injured so much that Snead just said "enough's enough"? I'm in Montana so if any of you down in LA have heard something, I'd like to hear it.

He couldn't separate, couldn't win horizontally which was like the hallmark of his career.

Could have sworn there was already a thread about this "Kupp" guy
Roster bonus due on the 16th, move before that saves 2.5. Doubt they wait that long though

He looked really slow toward the end of the season. 2021 Kupp could beat you with every route which is what made him dangerous. DBs weren't worried about 2024 Kupp beating them deep so they played him aggressively.

I don’t know his playing weight, and he looks pretty lean… I wonder is he lost 10lbs if he’d get some twitch back?

Either that or add some weight and play TE.

I liken this to when Justin Turner moved on from the Dodgers; he was the heart and soul of the team and was nails in the postseason. Won a Title with the club, moved on, and the the club won another title.

I think the same happens for our Rams.

IT sucks but we root for the name on the front of the jersey more so than the back.

And I had a JT and a Coop jersey. I miss them both....

Tue Horns are making the right call, regardless of sentiment. The interests of the team are are more important than individual interests. It would have been Sweet to retain Cooper as a player/coach, but he is due to make too much money to justify his current production. I agree with a poster here in wishing that Cooper eventually comes back to the Horns as a WR coach.

When I think of all the big catches he made in the second half of the season, I think of the DB being draped all over him for nearly every one. Just no separation ability.

This could be true - but does anyone have some data on this?

I think PFF has a ranking for separation rate.

Here's some, I was about to post this about why they looked at this move. Adams was much more successful against man coverage which is where we suffered last season. Puka was beating everything as evidence by this chart but we didn't have anyone else consistently able to get open in man. This also shows why they made a huge push for Mike Evans last season too.

I don't have separation stats, but YAC stats are somewhat related. (yards after catch)

Kupp had been averaging about 5.5 yac/reception for his career. Then last year that dropped to 4.0.
Throughout his career, each catch was roughly 6.4 yards per catch per reception, so he was catching passes the same distance last year.
When you include throws that were not caught, he averages about 7.6 yards in distance over his career - last year ADOT was 7.5 - so average targets, caught or not, on average, were the same distance.

This data is from the Advanced Receiving & Rushing table:

according to this cooper was middle of the road in separation.

I'm thinking moving off him is more about age and injury.

Wow only 2 broken tackles.

That's the thing I noticed last year more than anything - he was getting tackled a lot easier then in years past.

I'm guessing that is not having confidence in the body staying healthy.

Or more of his catches are contested where he gets tackled on the play immediately.
