We learned:

1) our secondary is legit. 3 INTs against a top QB in an offense for which we had no film is damned impressive.

2) Any worry that McVay would be figured out or would be struggling is moot. His subtly new take on the Jet sweep develops faster and forces the D to commit sooner which means misdirection plays, play action and those jet sweeps are even more effective.

3) Todd Gurley is a beast and I’m glad he’s not getting 30+ runs a game. McVay’s offense is so diverse that everyone has a chance at sustainable success.

4) Wade hasn’t lost his touch with second half adjustments. That will be key going forward.

5) Our DL depth is amazing

6) Goff is a top 5 QB

7) This team can legit beat any team in every phase.

8) The league was put on notice that without a monster game from AD or Suh (which was much better than the stat sheet showed) or massive offensive output, this team can still find a way to win by 20.
I like be me some Goff but top 5?
He did force two red zone passes that could have easily been picked.
He still has room to grow, which is awesome.

That our Special Teams' return team can't still get thru a game without getting called for holding and/or for a block in the back.
Troy Hill was the culprit. Twice. Didn't look too good in preseason either.
????
Good thing we got Sam Shields (and Robey Coleman) at CB.
Looks like Wade likes Marquis Christian too (instead of another CB on the field)
Troy better wise up or he's not even gonna be a ST guy.

By yardage? No.

But very few QBs just turn it on and put teams away at that critical moment and Goff is one of the few who does.

We saw a ton of high dollar QBs who couldn’t including Matt Ryan, Matt Stafford, Jimmy G, and others.

I can't go there with bullet point #6 yet, but i'm right there with ya on everything else.

With all of Goff’s family in the house, he may have been trying a little too hard. Understandable. Goff is only going to get better. He did settle down in the second half. I think overall he did pretty well for a first game.

McVay is doing too much. He's gonna burn out.
He needs to hire Boras as our OC and playcaller, and concentrate on just being head coach.

Goff and his receivers didn't look all that smooth. This included the second the second half of the game. Granted Gurley, and Cooks had a good game. Gurley had big plays, but a lot of that was his own doing -breaking tackles and avoiding defenders.

Who knows why.
I would hope that wouldn't affect him but we are all human.
Considering no game time snaps with the starting O I thought the whole O played well.
Very pleased with Goff overall.
The long ball still isn't there but a 40 yard penalty is as effective as a 40 yard catch.....except for those of us with Goff in fantasy football.

I learned that if my Aunt had a package like the one Peters was grabbing, she'd be my uncle.

Someone posted this in another thread, and I 100% agree-- I would love to see Jared Cook in this McVay offense.
Blue font means he was joking, Cook is fool's gold. He literally has this one game every year and then disappears for the rest of the season. Every single year is supposed to be his "breakout year" after he has his one big game but it's been 10 seasons now, it's just not going to happen.

Also McVay's offense depends on route reliability and above the shoulders play. Cook is all straight line speed and size, just like Britt, Quick, and many other Fisher castoffs that McVay wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

That's okay. You'll see.

Goff is already doing things that seem subtle, but are the difference between good and great QBs.

And I'm granting that this includes the Raiders missing a bunch of opportunities to intercept him.

He's very close to being one of the top QBs in this league. And no, he's likely not going to win any yardage titles because we have a kickass defense and an offense that spreads the wealth. Plus, the HC isn't about running up the score.

That said, this won't be the only time we win by 20 and Goff will have greater canvases to show how far he's come and how good he is compared to the other QBs in this league.

Goff's a top 5 QB.

My current rankings for THIS year are: (players who haven't played or rookies aren't on this list)

1) Aaron Rodgers - That comeback showed he's at the top of his game
2) Tom Brady - So much for receivers making a difference
3) Philip Rivers - Playing at the top of his game. He won't face Tyreek Hill every week.
4) Jared Goff - Makes all the throws. Only a slight timing issue prevented this from being a massive blowout
5) Drew Brees - Still a top QB, loses a few spots due to not having the long ball.
6) Russell Wilson - One of the most dangerous overall QBs in the league. Only a very good DL contains him.
7) Ben Roethlisberger - One iffy outing in the rain against a MUCH improved CLE team doesn't diminish him.
8) Kirk Cousins - Like Goff, won't win any yardage titles in MN, but his accuracy is on display.
9) Matt Ryan - Hot and cold, like an early Philip Rivers. Inconsistent.
10) Andrew Luck - Tremendous outing against a Bengal team seemingly intent on retiring him.
10) Ryan Fitzpatrick - Saints D was touted as among preseason best. Carved them up with every throw.

I fully expect that it's possible that either Darnold or Mahomes could make this list. Guys like Cam Newton and Matt Stafford aren't on the list because they continue to have issues with consistency.

I really wouldn't expect much to change in the top 5, but the 6-10 slots could have some volatility as the season progresses.

I base my rankings on footwork, accuracy, ball placement, decision making, pocket awareness, game awareness and situational execution (i.e. completing a pass on a critical 3rd down gets a ton more weight than throwing an incomplete on a 2nd and 5. Also, throwing the ball away instead of taking a sack or getting picked is a positive).

It's just the way I see it. I said we were a bad team in 2016 because we were. I said we had the potential to be a playoff team in 2017 and we were. I think we can win the Super Bowl this year and I think we're going to.

Oh, and also, I think and see Goff being a top 5 QB. His progress is remarkable.

I'm perfectly aware of the blue font designation. I think Cook's tenure here ended up like everyone else's in the Fisher era. He's cheap enough, and our tight ends aren't anything special so far. I bet we could get Cook for under $5 mil a year.

Ok, but tell me which of our tight ends has ever matched what Cook just did? or the playoff catches he had with Green Bay? Sure he’s flawed, but he is still a playmaker.
