Also, the run defense is our weakness. Lucky that our offense is high powered to take early leads and force opponents to abandon the run. But if we face a defense who can slow down our offense, we will probably be looking at a game similar to the 1st half.

In defense of the defense, that Raiders OL, especially their interior, is one of the best in the NFL AND they held so often and blatantly it’s a wonder the Raiders didn’t have a bigger first half.

I fully expect us to dominate as run defenders.

You’ll notice the Raiders didn’t run worth a dang in the second half once adjustments were made. Also, we had no film on them, so guessing how the OL would block was tough and it showed.

Off the top of my head, I don't know of any second year safeties, locked in man, with both size and speed disadvantages, who can or are willing to whip their head around with the ball in the air to make the play. I mean, I'm totally used to safeties mindlessly plowing into the receiver, without turning back, and picking up a penalty. Good for Johnson.

Maybe practicing w Aquib and MP is having that affect....

Austin Blythe filled in quite capably for Jamon Brown.

Yeah, I think this is huge--sure there was no Mack, but our OL does not look like they've lost a step or anything. They were fantastic and it looks like Blythe gives us 6 quality starters. I feel like we could even be ok if a tackle had to go out for a few downs or a game or two, with Boom in the wings.

I think people claiming our guys needed more preseason game snaps aren't on the same page as McBae. He looked at the schedule and saw two easy games to start the season and decided not to risk the franchise in meaningless games. And don't give me this notion it would have taken the rust off. There were tons of guys who got snaps in the preseason that were very rusty if not more rusty than our guys were. IMO the resting of guys in preseason was McVay's plan to use @Oakland and vsArizona as our two warm up games for week 3 vs the Chargers and week 4 vs the Vikings.

I don't think McVay forgot Gurley at all in the 1st half. Every other team knows how good he is and how we used him last year. Gurley was a 1st half decoy to a large extent to set up finishing them off in the 2nd half. With all the jet sweeps and play action we saw in the first half, the play action stuck around in the 2nd half and btw Goff is amazing at it, it gave their DC something to think about at half time. We came out in the same formations and passed out of it while also running Gurley more in the 2nd half. It was all part of McVay's plan.

Personally not worried at all about our linebackers. They're young and talented. Let them grow together under Wade.

My take was that McVay is our play caller(and has upwards of 30 years left in him) and our assigned OC is basically a glorified advisor who will always be disposable. We never have to worry about our OC taking a HC job and leaving team in potential despair ie McVay, Shannahan, etc

I’d imagine in a few years he will pass off the play calling duties opening the chances to lose a OC for a HC job. But agree they will always be able to fall back on McVay calling plays if that ever happens

Pretty well covered it...nice job!

I learned that Malcom Brown is a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. He made 2 or 3 nice plays.

He's certainly making the most out of his reps, the presence of John Kelly certainly motivated him to play better. The competitive atmosphere will bring the best out of our roster.

Malcom Brown is a gem. I know John Kelly is the hot flavor right now, but Malcom Brown snaps are very much worthwhile. What really sets the two apart this year - I would guess - is the special teams contributions, the knowledge of the entire playbook, and most importantly, pass protection when called upon.

That our Special Teams' return team can't still get thru a game without getting called for holding and/or for a block in the back.

We learned:

1) our secondary is legit. 3 INTs against a top QB in an offense for which we had no film is damned impressive.

2) Any worry that McVay would be figured out or would be struggling is moot. His subtly new take on the Jet sweep develops faster and forces the D to commit sooner which means misdirection plays, play action and those jet sweeps are even more effective.

3) Todd Gurley is a beast and I’m glad he’s not getting 30+ runs a game. McVay’s offense is so diverse that everyone has a chance at sustainable success.

4) Wade hasn’t lost his touch with second half adjustments. That will be key going forward.

5) Our DL depth is amazing

6) Goff is a top 5 QB

7) This team can legit beat any team in every phase.

8) The league was put on notice that without a monster game from AD or Suh (which was much better than the stat sheet showed) or massive offensive output, this team can still find a way to win by 20.
