I was reading some comments on a Facebook football group and a poster said that with the new NFL rules concerning hand offs, the RPO will become a thing of the past.

What changed? It’s the first I heard of it.

Let's hope it's true because I freaking hate rpo plays. So tacky and college like.

I doubt it's true because too many offense incorporate elements of RPO as the running QB is in vogue. It will devalue their QBs and any QB playing in an RPO collegiate offense. If they want to risk the single most important position on the offense so be it.

NFL Forward Handoff rule states that the ball can be handed to only an eligible receiver when the carrier is behind the Scrimmage line.

The result of penalty will be 5 yards and replay of downs.

NFL read option 2023 rule will penalize teams handing out a football on a read option. An illegal forward pass will now be a penalty. Previously, NFL read option rule stated quarterbacks can be tackled if they are carrying out a fake. It does not matter if they are not in possession of the ball.

After a quick look around, I'm now not convinced that it's that big of a deal. At least one team in the division uses sideways handoffs (which are presumably legal), while another team in the division formerly used the now-illegal, forward handoffs.

If Trey Lance would have handed the ball off here, I guess it would have been illegal (forward) under the new rule (and he would not have gotten hurt).

It is a small thing. The handoff should be easier to read defensively with the ball on the side. The QB can’t run in step as easily with the RB either deciding to hand off or not.

Seems pretty tic-tacky and just something else the referees have to manage now. Because they don’t have enough to fuck up.

It’s like they think they need to make changes since they are meeting.

I don’t like it.

Be interesting to see if this'll be one of those rules where the refs judge it to the letter or if it is a bit relaxed. It involves the offense so I'm guessing they'll be pretty relaxed on it. Either way, just another rule for them to make judgement calls on which has worked wonders in the past.

Just read about the new "Launch" rule...any player that leaves Wait for it....both feet or even one foot to make a tackle will result in a 15 yard penalty......This game may become unwatchable in a few years. How many penalties will be levied against the defensive backs for this one do you think?

Whaaaat? Didn't know that was a thing too. So yeah, piggy backing off what RamDino said what does a defender do if a RB is jumping over the olineman at the goal line? Can defenders still jump to meet them in air to stop them? Defense just gets screwed further and further every offseason.

I'm a little confused here. If the ball leaves the quarterback's hand into the hands of another player its a legal forward pass. Even if its only in the air for a couple feet. But if he hands off with the guy in front of him they want to compare it to an illegal forward pass?

In the read option when QB holds the ball long enough to decide to hand it off or run, the runningback ends up being slightly in front of him.

It may make execution of the read option a bit more difficult and may take time for QBs/RBs who use it to get the hang of it.
 
What I don’t understand, is if the QB wants to hand the ball to a runningback who is slightly ahead of him, but keeps it, is that a penalty, if he was in the process of handing the ball, and the RB touches it, but the QB keeps it.

The rule stating a QB can be hit even if he doesn’t have the ball seems to go against the trend of protecting Brady for the last 20 years
