Arizona Cardinals still awaiting word on severity of Deone Bucannon's right leg injury
Bob McManaman, azcentral sports
The Cardinals were still awaiting word Monday on the severity of
inside linebacker Deone Bucannon’s right leg injury a day after he was hurt during the first quarter of the team’s
27-24 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The good news, according to coach Bruce Arians, is that the initial diagnosis appears to point to the injury not being “as severe as it once looked.”
“We’re still waiting on some images to come back,” Arians said. “We sent everything off to the surgeon who did his (right ankle) repair because all the injury is to that part of the leg. It could be a day or two; it could be serious. So, we don’t know yet.”
Bucannon missed the past three games of last season and the first three games of this season
because of an ongoing ankle issue that required surgery in the offseason. He entered Sunday’s game ranked third on the team in total tackles with 60 and added one more before he was hurt tackling Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette.
In other injury news, defensive lineman Josh Mauro managed to play Sunday despite a sprained ankle but he re-injured it and wasn’t able to finish the game. He probably will be listed as questionable this Sunday against the visiting Los Angeles Rams.
Running back Kerwynn Williams, meanwhile, suffered two cracked ribs against the Jaguars and his status is uncertain.
“It’s just going to be how much he can play with pain,” Arians said. “That’s pretty hard to do as a running back. I would anticipate he might miss some time.”
Inside linebacker Josh Bynes collected a ton of extra game action with Bucannon out of the lineup and he led the team in tackles with eight. He also forced a fumble and had a tackle on special teams.
“He’ll get a game ball,” Arians said, noting game balls will be distributed on Wednesday when the team returns for practice. “He played lights out, especially in that sub-package, which he hasn’t played in yet. But he got mental reps and he had no mental errors. Just had unbelievable stats.
“He was more than ready to play and played as a starter and played at a very high level.”
Quick kicks
Dawson’s 57-yard field goal was the longest game-winner in Cardinals’ franchise history and the third-longest overall.
The kick was also Dawson’s 40th of 50 or more yards. He is now one of six kickers in history with at least that many, joining Sebastian Janikowski (55), Jason Hanson (52), John Kasay (42), Matt Prater (42) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (40).
- Outside linebacker Chandler Jones has 35 tackles for loss since joining the Cardinals for the start of the 2016 season, which represents the most in the NFL over that span.
- Punter Andy Lee has dropped 10 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line the past two games after landing 12 punts inside the 20 during Arizona’s first nine games.
- With Sunday’s win over the Jaguars at University of Phoenix Stadium, the Cardinals improved to 8-1 at home against teams from the AFC under Arians.

Former Cardinals running back Chris Johnson continues critical Twitter rants about team
Jeremy Cluff, azcentral sports
The Cardinals
cut running back Chris Johnson on Oct. 10 to make room for Adrian Peterson.
Since then, Johnson has become a very vocal critic of the team
on his Twitter account.
He has used the social media platform on multiple occasions to blast the team's play and decisions and has engaged with Cardinals fans about it.
The
running back most recently tweeted about the
Cardinals' loss in Houston on Sunday and was critical of the play calling and offensive linemen.

Critical rants? He's being honest. He isn't blasting the organization for cutting him or the players. He's pointing out the obvious. Bad play calling and a poor offensive line.
--------------
He's right about the O-line.

Bruce Arians is in the midst of his best coaching performance
The Arizona Cardinals head coach and play caller has revamped his offense and the Cardinals are still competitive.

No matter how many times we think it may be time to bury the
Arizona Cardinals, Bruce Arians and company find a way to extend it a week.
The Arizona Cardinals moved to 5-6 on the season and are still in playoff contention.
Maybe more important, Bruce Arians has completely transformed himself as a play caller and tailored the offense around what
Blaine Gabbert does well.
It has been a very conservative offense, shots down the field are basically non-existent, the intermediate throws are in big windows and the team is finding a way to not out too much on Gabbert.
It is the opposite of what Arians did with
Drew Stanton, where he just left the offense the same like he still had
Carson Palmer out there and in turn it has created a boring offense, that doesn't make mistakes.
This is the biggest revelation of the the Cardinals without Palmer, they are 2-2 post Palmer injury, and continue to tread water in the NFC.
The work by Arians and his offensive staff should he praised more than maybe any coaching job he has done in his time with the Cardinals.
Gabbert's numbers are pedestrian: 44/72 61.1% 298 yards 5 TD 3 INT
Yet, these are some of the best numbers of Gabbert's career. It isn't because he's great in Bruce Arians offense, no, in fact this offense doesn't resemble anything we've seen in the Arians era.
Yet, it has been extremely… effective for Blaine Gabbert.
Not taking chances, setting up passes using the running game, even if it has been… bad.
Quick throws out of the backfield, using the tight ends consistently.
There's been one deep pass in two games and it resulted in a touchdown.
You know what? That's fine…
Give me an adaptive approach by a coach and I'll show you a great coach.
The coaching job Arians has done post Palmer injury is impressive.
His defense and special teams have let him down in one game (Houston) and they just couldn't stop a great player in the other (Seattle and Wilson).
The Cardinals are amazingly still in this.
Let's get crazy and back on the bandwagon, y'all.
----------------
I like the article
And appreciate the change in approach. It sure is nice to have something to cheer about. I like the use of the tight ends a lot more than our normal offense as well. So keep it up!
-------------
Gabbert looks pretty sharp to me
Most of his passes are accurate and on time. Some I would say are better than what we see from Palmer as far as timing. The ball has zip on it and flies off his hand. He scrambles which as nice as well. He has thrown into coverage more than I like but if we’re honest so did Palmer. I think he’s head and shoulders better than Stanton also.
I would like to know if the pick was a wr mistake or Gabbert. That was a timing route and williams I suspect did not break in when he was supposed to- it was a slow break and he really didn’t come in. I have seen that route with fitz and others and it looks different.
----------
We finally beat a good team, and it may have been a gift. Other than the Jags, we’ve beaten nobody. If we stop the Rams and Gabbert continues to show improvement, maybe I can get on board. Right now I’m still in "hope for the best, expect the worse" mode.
----------
Still, it's been refreshing seeing Arians adjusting the offense
He’s been far less rigid with the scheme than I expected. He’s finally differentiating himself from the Whisenhunt archetype, in my opinion. Shame it’s during a losing season.
---------
i think somebody got in his ear and said change or be gone.
---------
Cards finally showed some heart yesterday.
Where has it been? Our d-line played well holding the Jags running game in check. Veldheer played well at LT. Gabbert made plays when he had too.
Now the question is: can they do it AGAIN against the Rams? If they lose and fall to 5-7, then the Cards playoff chances are over. If they can upset the Rams however, then the Cards at least become relevant and we will feel some excitement inside the building. Time will tell.
----------
I saw a completely different offense yesterday predicated on the QB’s strengths. Short and intermediate timing routes focused on the TE. I don’t know if that is Gabbert or BA. But I liked it. One other element that was mentioned on the TV cast was the change in scheme by the Jags.
In the first half they were zoning which Gabbert picked apart. In the second half they played more man and Gabbert struggled. However, we saw an element that has been missing for a LONG time in our offense…a mobile QB. Like RW has burned us for so long, Gabbert was able to take advantage of DBs playing man and a spy slower than the QB. I think he should continue to use his mobility in those situations.
I also thought the offensive line played well.
----------
I thought the offensive line were awesome against a team with 40+ sacks. That kinda got lost in all the other areas that were good but without that O line performance no way we come close to winning the game.
-----------
Not ready to sip the Gabbs kool aide but yesterday sure beats the alternative.
I expect Gabbert will get rattled much more against the Rams and their is ZERO room for bone headed turn overs for the Cards to have a chance at a W.
---------
My only concern right now is how shy Gabbert can be on 3rd downs. Getting the screen game going – intrigued to see if DJ Foster can help there – might dig them out of some tricky 3rd down spots. The Cards don’t scare anybody but if the offense can stay balanced enough to keep out of obvious passing situations, and if the defense can play like they’re facing the Jaguars every week, the games should stay close.
Somehow they’ve managed to keep the product entertaining. That game might have been the most fun I’ve had watching football this year.
