There's a couple different perspectives that matter here, those being the NFL perspective and the fan perspective.
From the NFL perspective they likely wanted to hold the player accountable and show women that they support them, and that makes me think the NFL wanted a longer suspension and probably of the one year variety. So I doubt they're happy with this judgment. I figure they'll appeal it.
From the fan perspective and particularly female fans, they probably wanted to see him held accountable and see the league support women's rights and fair treatment. Also in my own case I hate the fucking Browns and purely wanted to see them get fucked.
But here's the thing... While I agree that the NFL should push for a longer suspension the punishment here does fit the crime, to my eye at least, as far as using the facts are concerned. The Houston DA elected not to press criminal charges. The women received settlements. And comparing this to Roethlisberger's incident is apples and oranges. With Big Ben there was a question of rape, which is a whole other level compared to what I've read regarding Watson's behaviors.
This won't be popular but I have three daughters and if one of them were one of these victims I would tell them report it and let it run its course. Get a settlement and move on. That's the truth here. There's no reason to go further than that. His contract is not a slap in their faces by any means, but rather him being rewarded for being a very good QB. And I'll leave it at that. Would have enjoyed seeing him get 2 years but that would have been unfair in a lot of ways given the facts here.
