Mike Evans and Overrated Bastardized Jackass both had a running game, other targets, and better offensive lines. When Silatolu went down, the Panthers had nothing. Evans had V-Jax; the other one had Randle. Benjamin had nothing to work with, and he still produced. When he gets another year in with Newton, we won't even be discussing any other receiver.
Tampa Bay had one of the worst OLs in the NFL last year and a poor running game. The Panthers had a far better running game than Tampa Bay. The Panthers had a top 10 rushing attack in 2014.
Benjamin had nothing to work with? He had one of the most productive TEs in the NFL last year in Greg Olsen. He also had 14 games of Cam Newton at QB...which is better than what Evans had.
And the fact that Benjamin lacked another big time WR helped him. He had the fifth worst catch rate among starting WRs in 2014. He was tied for second in most passes dropped (with 11). He was tied for fourth worst in average yards after catch.
Benjamin put up great numbers for a rookie because he was THE guy in the Panthers passing game for Newton.
Now, I'm not saying Benjamin is a bad WR. He had an impressive rookie year. But he wasn't consistent at all. He struggled with drops, route running, and picking up yardage after the catch. He made some great plays on contested balls which is why he was valuable to Carolina.
That all said, he was outplayed by both Evans and OBJ.
People may hate OBJ but you gotta respect how amazing he was. The guy put up 73 catches for 1043 yards and 9 TDs over the SECOND HALF of the 2014 season(for reference, that's better than what Benjamin produced over the entire season). That's freakish. And he did that as a rookie. That's something you'd expect out of Calvin Johnson not a rookie WR.
Mike Evans? The guy put up 1051 yards and 12 TDs despite being mostly stuck with Josh McCown at QB. His catch rate was 7+% higher than Benjamin's and he only dropped 4 passes. Beckham Jr.? His catch rate was 19% higher than Benjamin's and he only dropped 2 passes.
