I think this is a sign of the times and it's fucking stupid. Everyone wants to get offended about every fucking thing they can. It makes me sick, the poor me, self entitled bull shit. I don't know a single white guy that would give two fucks if there was a team called the Honkeys, Whities, crackers or anything else. And don't fucking sit there and tell me about how it's not the same because we haven't been repressed, blah blah fucking blah. News flash, it's 2015, neither have hardly any of these people bitching. God damnit the responses in this thread just raised my blood pressure

There's actually still quite the debate going on, with Goddard admitting themselves that the text could have easily been mistranslated.

Even then, words people create to refer to themselves doesn't make it incapable of being turned derogatory against them. Most attribute the gay community for the term queer in the sense of referring to themselves, but that hasn't stopped it from being used in a derogatory fashion. Language changes over time.

It's like if somebody used your name to be synonymous with messing up or acting dumb and it caught on in your friendship circle. At the root your name was not a disparaging term, but that doesn't change the fact that it's being used as such NOW.

You don't wanna know what my name has become synomous with.well I dunno maybe you do.

But I don't care. People can call me what ever they want a long as they smile when they say it.

If you really want to go all PC police on sporting teams, we can consider other names offensive. We shouldn't stop at Redskins. I can see the term Patriots being offensive to some. Some think people who consider themselves Patriots are right wing extremists. Why not go after that name?

Cowboys could offend people who aren't white and live in the inner cities. Animal Rights people could consider names with animals to be offensive to them. The animals are being exploited.

What about Vikings, Pirates, Buccaneers or Raiders? Maybe someone's ancestors were killed by them?

Maybe people who are Packers don't like that term? Maybe they'd rather be called product organizers?

Steelers sounds too much like stealers. Lakers are in the land of beaches with oceans, no lakes. Maybe thats offensive.

What the heck does Browns mean? It could be interpreted as something out of a toilet. Thats very offensive.

Maybe teams should only use city names. Cities with multiple teams could be team one, team two and so forth. That way no one gets offended. After all, we are in the Political Correctness era. One can't be too careful.

I think the same could be said for all of us, high school was a weird time for me lol.

Like leuzer said earlier, why is it all of a sudden offensive now?

If they do change it, my buddy who is a redskin fan said the team was leaning toward Bravehearts, which is better IMO.

I'm have parts of both Cherokee and Choctaw in my blood, and I don't know the name offensive.. And large Native communities and schools also use the name redskins.

The general populous don't have an issue with the name - some tribes do. Can't remember where I saw the study on this but it was around when it was initially a big issue, and I think they polled a lot of Natives about it.

I say all of us European Americans start protesting C****er Barrel. It uses an offensive slur and it is deeply offensive and mocks our long and proud heritage.
The name is offensive, their logo stereotypes European Americans as people who sit on chairs and lean against what appears to be a bourbon barrel, claiming we are all a bunch of alcoholics. Sure, they'll SAY it's a "cracker" barrel but everyone knows crackers don't come in barrels, they come in bags and boxes!
Change the name C****er Barrel to Caucasian Barrel. After all, white people should have something to be offended by, too!

It's not, at the very least this fight has been being fought for 20 years now. The first time they were asked to cancel the trademark on the nickname was 1992.
