I have no hate against Key. If it were a very inexpensive one year contract, sure, but I don’t want the Rams to sign him longterm unless Donald got on his ass immediately about effort and holding up against the run - something we need to do against teams like the 69ers.

Well, you're the one who said he 'sucks' against the run, and a 25 year old who is an excellent pass rusher might just learn to improve other parts of his game with good coaching. The Rams just lost 2 OLB's in Miller and OBO, Lewis has health issues & Hollins qualifies for free agency next year, so signing Key to a 3 or 4 year contract seems pretty reasonable to me.
As far as holding up against the run, that's why you sign Bobby Wagner.

I can't blame Von for taking the money. The Bills are in win-now mode but that's a crazy amount for a guy that old. He's got maybe 2 years of elite play left in him.

I think they will try to grab Wagner to fill the second ILB role. I don't see another edge that is worth the money on the market that is better than Lewis or Hollins. IMO Hollins is underrated and underused. The Rams can roll with Hollins and Lewis. They can use their 3rd round pick for an edge if they so desire (which I think they will) This draft has some prospects that need some development but have good potential for development. They could be on the board when the Rams pick in the third round or the Rams can trade up in the round to grab one.

Guys like Boye Mafe is one that might drop into the 3rd. He's more of a 2nd round talent but like Lewis he could drop. He's got excellent speed and explosiveness off the edge with good measurables. He's not a complete player which IMO is why he will drop, but it's nothing good coaching can't improve upon. These guys can be situational players as rookies.

But it's time for Lewis to blossom. Like I've pointed out before Hollins has the speed and physical traits to be more than he's been used for. Hollins has excellent length and speed at the position. He came in Raw but the talent is there. The inconsistent technique he showed has plagued him from the start but in this defensive scheme, he offers the talent to be a good edge player. If he can show improvement at the POA on runs he could be what they need. Coach him up and he can be the long term solution opposite Floyd.

I like Lewis and in combination with Hollins they could have what they need opposite Floyd. Lewis on early downs because he's better against the run and Hollins on passing downs because IMO he's a better rusher. In two years as a Ram Justin has 5 sacks, 2 QBKD, 10 pressures, and 2 hurries, as a part-time player playing as a blitzing LB.. The talent is there just develop it.

Seriously though, they could give Donte Jackson CB from Carolina a look.

Casey Hayward would come cheap and has good instincts.

A one year deal is all I’d go for with Key. He washed out at Oakland because he had effort issues and couldn’t defend the run, and the 69ers picked him up on a cheap deal. This is not me pulling shit out of my ass; he was a highly rated prospect who had what I consider a flaw that doesn’t improve.

Character can be overblown or kept on the straight and narrow. Tweeners can find a position if they have a valuable skill. Weight issues aren’t a huge deal if - like the character issues - you helped them.

But the one thing I don’t think ever improves is effort. Key dropped from a likely top fifteen pick because he was not only terrible against the run, but because he was a lazy player. A lack of effort kills any interest I have, regardless how young and talented.

Arden Key, pass rusher of the 69ers, formerly a third round pick out of Louisiana State by the Raiders.

Edit: Fucking phone and long fingers.

He was young and immature. The Rams need to do their DD. People-players can grow and change.

So what you are saying is that his stats last year showed a lack of effort ? You shouldn't want him for even a 1 year deal if you feel so strongly about his showing such a character flaw.

I know I was over-emotional before, but I work in Buffalo. Vonn's contact looks good, but the only endorsement money he is going to get will be from a car dealer. In LA, I believe Vonn could have gotten huge endorsement deals from international companies. And Buffalo is a great city, but let's be honest, it's no LA. It's cold here, and not much to do during the season, although the fans here will love him. And I thought he had a good relationship with AD and was going to "run it back". Of course he told us the same thing about his "love" for Denver. Oh well... I guess his true love was money, or his ego. Whatever... Go Rams!
RamDino,
My wife is also from Western New York. Where do you call home?

I’ve seen players completely wash out because of effort and getting a long term deal. There’s a reason why I don’t trust Key on a long term contract.

A one year deal is a contract year. Last year with the Whiners - the best year of his career - he still couldn’t do anything against the run.

A one year deal is a contract year where you get the best out of a player.

What happened in Oakland? He got complacent. He had job security, so why should he try hard and work on, oh, I don’t know, his run defense?

I’m fine with a one year deal. We get a comp pick if he does well, and let another team gamble on age and pass rushing potential. I’d rather it not be us because of his known issues.

That’s all I’m saying. Don’t sign him - or any other player aside from Hunter - to a long term deal.

The good news is that we can afford Bobby Wagner, and we might be able to buy low on Dante Fowler. A front of:
DE: Aaron Donald
NT: Greg Gaines
DE: A'Shawn Robinson
OLB: Dante Fowler
ILB: Bobby Wagner
ILB: Ernest Jones
OLB: Leonard Floyd

Is better than the front that won the Super Bowl imo.
Yeah, I like the look of this lineup. Got some power and speed and a good combo of pass rush with pass defense. One area I thought we were too weak last year was covering RBs over the middle. I swear if I see someone like Elijah Mitchell catching passes over the middle on 3rd and 7 for yet another easy conversion I'm gonna scream like a little girl.
Bobby will definitely help to clean that up. Make it happen McSnead and Demoff!!!!

Oh, okay, my wife was born and raised in Cheetowaga, NY. But I met her after she moved to Anaheim, California. Her dad owned several restaurants in the area before he passed.

Are you a native New Yorker?

Not happy we lost him, but would have been more unhappy had we paid him that contract. And I'm not sure he's going to have the same success in Buffalo without AD's support.
That's the problem. Sill AD retire now. SHyte's about to get real...lol

people giving von shit - i mean I'll go back to not giving two fucks about him, but you can't blame him.

He already has 2 super bowls and he is going to another super bowl level team.

He made some big plays but I'm not even sure he was that great tbh.

No hard feelings.. He was worth the picks. He got more money than we could afford. Can't blame him when they over pay. I know he has been breaking down the last few years. So don't think he plays a whole season. Especially in that cold.

And Buffalo doesn't have Reggie Scott
