Are you seriously trying to compare Jimmy Smith to Von Miller? Miller was a top 3, top 5 FA.
Silly stuff. Miller got what he deserved, not his fault the Rams didn’t have the cap room
Zadarius Smith took a cheaper deal than he could have gotten elsewhere to sign back with Baltimore this week.

I suspect this is the plan now for the defence. Make it a better overall unit than this past season, albeit with a less dynamic pass rush. The A-list pass rushers seem to be gone. I don't think we can replace what Miller brought, and I would not want to get caught overpaying for B-list talents to try it. The upgrades will have to come elsewhere.
True. But I'll also say that Fowler did put up 11.5 sacks next to Donald in 2019. He's still only 27 years old. If he's affordable, I think he can do big things for us.

Thats 17.7 guaranteed all 3. Thats much.
Agreed. People look at the APY but fail to consider the significance of the three guaranteed years. Von is about to turn 33. That'll mean paying him a huge amount of money as a 35 year old.

I’m kinda upset. Yes, Von got us a Super Bowl, and I’m thankful that he did…but for fuck’s sake, don’t string us along so we can pivot to someone else. Now the edge rushers are gone, and we’ll be all but forced to draft an edge rusher with our third round pick.

It’s one more need, and I don’t trust the other edge rushers in the free agency pool.

The Edge rushers are not all gone ... sheesh.

I liked Fowler in horns but he is a few years removed from that now, and seems to have struggled everywhere else he has been. I would take him on the cheap. Otherwise I would pass.

Edge Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney is one of the better run defenders in the league and he has the speed and power to move around the defensive line to create mismatches in pass-rushing situations. He's a No.2 pass-rusher and should not be relied upon as a No. 1 option.

I always wanted to see what he could do with AD. Probably wants too much money that he has been getting on one-year deals.

Edge Arden Key
Key has never been a great run defender, but his breakout 2021 season showed that he has a role rushing the passer from multiple alignments.

Edge Dante Fowler Jr.
Fowler isn't exceptional at any one thing, making him a rotational player at this point in his career. He can create some pass-rush, but it's rarely explosive or effective, and he's a reasonable run defender if he can cut down on the missed tackles.

Arden Key played well this season for the Whiners. Both he and Folwer are still young. Good rotations will T-Lew and up-and-coming Garrett.

Rams might be able to get Gilmore and one of these two for close to the price of Miller.

Oh my bad.
Still, another guy who wasn’t a top 50 FA much less a top 5er.
Good for Von. I look forward to watching him terrorize the Patriots. Bills give him a legit shot to win Sb with 3rd team IIRC, there’s only like 1 or 2 guys who did it?

Everyone has struggled with the Falcons, they’re a shit show.

I’d love Fowler back. Even though people will probably tell me he took less money to go back to the Rams. Haha

The Edge rushers are not all gone ... sheesh.

Really? Aside from Hunter - whom I didn’t know was available at the time - who, exactly, do you sign to a longterm deal? Fowler, who was extremely ineffective in Atlanta? Key, who has done nothing of note in his up-and-down career? Clowney, who is always hurt?

Now sure, I’d love to trade for Hunter, given the right price, but that’s a question mark as well because Hunter also has injury concerns.

My point, which I should’ve stated clearer is that there are no edge rushers left who deserve a longterm contract. None, and I’m not going to be happy with how Miller treated this process.

He was all about the money, in the end, a mercenary. I’m grateful for his help in winning the Super Bowl, but you can’t deny the sour taste in the mouths of the fans who are angry. With Miller gone after he lied to fans, there is no elite edge rusher available, none worthy of a deal, and all we have to fix this is a third, at the most, when we have many needs for this team.

WAAAY too much $$ and too many years. He won’t be in the league 6 years from now.

The good news (tongue in cheek)? He won’t have to play second fiddle to #99 anymore. He can be the primary target of opposing OCs.

AD #99 was double and, at times, triple teamed all year (as usual). Think about that. Once you discount the QB, the remaining Rams defense is basically playing 10 on 8, or even 10 on 7! Any wonder ex Ram defenders aren’t racking up the league in another uniform?

Miller will be the next and a very expensive example.
I don’t see him playing lights out for them like he did for us...for 20 games.

Wow. $51.5 million guaranteed, including $45 million fully guaranteed at signing. There is no way the Rams were going to match that. Nor should they have.

I suspect that Von did want to return, and that the Rams got bid up quite a bit higher than they would have liked. Hence why a player like Miller remained unsigned for so long. But at a certain point, the guaranteed (!) money is too much for a player to turn down. Especially when the Bills' roster with Von Miller on it, for my money, is stronger than the Rams' roster without Von.

There is still much time for Snead to acquire upgrades at various positions. I am not worried!
But see, that's the thing...if he wanted to stay, stay. If money is even remotely similar, stay.

Granted, it's a big Brinks truck...I get it. But don't expect me to think you wanted to stay when you ran after the money bag like that.

Run it back, my ass.

Agreed!

Hunter is elite though he played full seasons he has had 14.5 sacks twice he is signed. And we talk about the AD effect hunter is the opposite he has had some good players but nobody special. He would thrive here. If they just looking to dump salary or a pick and a player like Rapp I'm sure the Rams would figure it out. And he is another that is young enough that you could kick the can and restructure if need be.

C'mon, Key is only 25 years old and just had his best season yet, including 6.5 sacks in only 374 defensive snaps. He also had 17 QB hits & 5 TFL's in that span. Imagine what Aaron Donald can do to help improve those already nice numbers. I'd sign him to a 3 or 4 year contract easy.

Hunter is to be paid about 25 mil over next 2 years. If he does good this year, extend him
