Fair enough.
But our coach would always tell the quarterback to aim for the numbers and catch it in your gut, (if possible).

Of course you use your hands and arms for balls that are mis-targeted.

In my opinion, it's as easy for a ball to go *through* your hands and it is catch it with your hands.
With the gloves they have available now and the work these guys put in, snatching the ball with your hands is preferred.

Maybe for middle schoolers but the ball should be caught in your fingers tips away from your body
"Fingertips"?

I would buy hands.

And I didn't play Middle School, funny guy.

I played in junior high and high school and that includes playoff games that we won.

I wasn't talking about you specifically paranoid guy I was saying younger people usually let the ball get to their body which is poor technique.

Every time I make fun of a guy for catching with his body my dad reminds me of when Michael Irving defended it, saying that catching with your hands away from your body is a good way to get the ball slapped out of them.

Yeah in the NFL receivers have to go get the ball. If you wait for it to your body you're giving the DB more time and opportunity to disrupt the catch or even just position to make the tackle. This is the big boy league.

But again just the way Van is, he seems like the kind of guy who is gonna keep busting his ass. So I'm betting he makes that adjustment in his technique.

All I know is, as 3rd receivers go Van Jefferson is pretty good. In 14 games over 700 yards and 6 TD's ain't bad for a WR3.

702 yards / 6 TD’s on a team with a lot of passing options. Not done yet. Very nice statistical leap in year 2 for Jeff!

Talk about promising.I say Ben Sko is going to keep getting better as well.

I just saw that first catch with a defender in front of him just about to tip the ball in traffic.—

He needed to make sure he catches the ball. There is a chance for a deflection & the pass timing was a little late.It was a 3rd & 12 on the Rams own 8 yard line.

He might but that totally irrelevant to this topic.

Great catch by van, of course he catches with his hands sometimes, but my OP was mainly about an observation I’ve noticed over the course of the season.

Well I’d say sometimes he doesn’t catch the ball right. That to me is an example as he should’ve secured it better than he did.
I’m saying he needs to make the easy catches. All Rams do when Stafford puts it on the spot.Ben Sko with one Tuesday & OBj needs to try to use 2 hands on another.
Copper Kupp & Higbee all have missed a few as well.I just think those plays are very important to make, especially when a team like the Hags are playing a soft zone coverage.

I’m not a big stat guy,but a Hags Fan hates Norton as DC.They are like 32 & 24th ranked in pass & rush defense. The stat that counts though to me besides winning & Lossing is Scoring. The Hags are 5th best on defense on fewest points scored.

The point is those mistakes & missed catches can be drive killers.Van making a play on 3rd & 12 is big.Stafford still threw a Int at the 15 of the Hags.

@ramsplaya16 I understand your concern but as with 99% of the young players in the NFL you have to be patient. Van has proven he’s willing to put in the work to keep on improving, which is something we as Rams fans should be focusing on. I would much rather people start threads focusing on the positives of our players and then mentioning how their game has room for improvement, rather than start a thread to dwell on the negatives of a player. IMHO

Van Jefferson is a very good #3 who can play all three roles in the Rams offense and has the best ability on the team to get deep.
He would be a mediocre #2, imo.

And.. his hands are shaky once in a while and he absolutely body catches.

He's not very young.. only 3 years younger than Kupp.. and is the son of an NFL WR coach. If he's not attacking the ball with his hands by now, I seriously doubt it will ever happen.

Agreed on all accounts

Described by a few as a Moss/Carter hybrid I don't see any fault in his game. I would be surprised if JJ is under 100 yards on Sunday.

Rams need to jump ahead and then create turnovers. This could come down to a Matt Gay kick FTW.

Van Jefferson is learning his craft. But he’s serviceable as a 3rd WR.

Rams can trade him and Atwell next year for a 2nd Round draft pick so they choose a Center or DE.

When OBJ is re-signed, there will be too many WRs.

There’s Kupp, Woods, OBJ, Van Jefferson, Skowronek, Harris, Koski, Akers, Brandon Powell, Warren Jackson, and Atwell in 2022.

So the receiving corp is too crowded for even VJ and Atwell to have the ball thrown to them.

And someone here pointed out, once a WR is used to catch with his body, it’s more likely that he’ll continue to catch with his body and will not catch it with his hands.

IDK, I think VJ can be used as trade because there are needs at other positions with upcoming FAs that the Rams have to sign and be under the cap. And with an abundance of receivers, they can get a decent draft position out of it.
