Saints' Sheldon Rankins Reportedly Will Undergo Surgery for Torn Achilles

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins' injury-plagued, young career hit another snag Sunday when he was carted off the field with a leg injury that was reportedly diagnosed as a torn Achilles that will require surgery.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the news after the 24-year-old went down in the second defensive drive of the NFC Divisional Round battle against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rankins was ruled out by the Saints, per Mike Triplett of ESPN.

On Monday, Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate reported an MRI confirmed the tear and that Rankins will have surgery this week.

Rankins' debut campaign got off to a delayed start in 2016, as a broken fibula suffered during the preseason caused him to miss New Orleans' first seven games.

The No. 12 overall selection in the 2016 NFL draft out of Louisville returned in Week 9 against the San Francisco 49ers, and he showed flashes of brilliance by putting up 20 tackles and 4.0 sacks in nine contests.

He followed that up by starting all 16 games last season and finishing with 26 tackles and 2.0 sacks.

In 2018, Rankins registered 40 tackles and eight sacks.

Oh man, they're bringing the cart onto the field for Saints DT Sheldon Rankins, who has been one of the best players on their team this year.

Oh no man... Sheldon Rankins has been amazing all year. Sad to see that for him

Rankins shot up draft boards due to excellent junior and senior seasons with the Cardinals that saw him average 56 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks per year as a lineman capable of playing either inside or outside.

Defense had been the Saints' weakness for years, which made drafting Rankins a no-brainer as he excels at both rushing the passer and stopping the run.

Now that Rankins is banged up once again, the Saints' defensive depth will be put to the test.

Tyeler Davison figures to maintain his starting spot, while playing time at Rankins' position will likely go to David Onyemata.

While the Saints tend to rely heavily on their high-octane offense to win games, they need their defense to step up in order to advance this postseason.

You're incredibly delusional.Gurley and Anderson will steamroll saints front 7.Plus the loss of All-Pro Sheldon Rankins, this week in particular i.e. Donald+Suh+Brockers trifecta = a devastating blow to the Saints

When did Sheldon Rankins make the All-Pro team? Heck, as a Saints fan that would be a great feather to put in ones cap “yeah, our team has an All Pro DE and DT.” Rankins is great, and losing him will hurt, but Onyemata and Rankins split snaps a lot, so we just need to keep the rotation flowing.

Do you guys run a lot of hurry up?

If you watched the game against the cowgurlz, you saw that the Rams called a short huddle most of the game, hurried to the line, and then called the play depending on the alignment they were facing. This was somewhat of a Chip Kelly Oregon scheme. In a sense that was a hurry up and they did go quick snap off some of them. They tended to let the play clock wind down but the defense was already in their sets when the play was called or changed. It was yet another McVay wrinkle in that he did it pretty consistently and it kept the cowgurlz off balance.

I'm sure Peyton saw that and will try to counter. It will be interesting to see if McVay changes that up again to offer another wrinkle.

No not a lot but more than teams I watch on weekends. NFC North teams are pretty methodical so maybe they are not a good example. I have seen the Rams run hurry up to start a game, randomly during the game and of course toward the end of the half or the game.

The
New Orleans Saints added a familiar face to help replace defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship Game versus the Los Angeles Rams.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Saints are signing free-agent defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker, per a source informed of the move.

Walker entered the NFL with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent in 2012. In three seasons with the Saints, he compiled 3.5 sacks and 28 tackles. After two years in Detroit, Walker spent 2017 with the Rams, totaling 22 tackles, a sack and four passes defended. The 28-year-old signed with the Bills last offseason but was cut after training camp and remained a free agent.

The Saints needed an interior defender after losing 2016 first-rounder Rankins to an Achilles' tendon tear in Sunday's Division Round victory over the Eagles. Rankins is headed to injured reserve, per Rapoport.

No street free agent can fill the massive gap left by Rankins, who was enjoying a monster campaign in the middle of a good Saints defense. Walker will provide depth to the New Orleans defensive line rotation in the NFC title tilt.

This is actually a great move.

He played for us, so he knows the guys he is playing next to.

He played for you guys, so he knows your player’s tendencies.

He is fresh. We have seen what CJ has done for your team, so if we can get 8-10 snaps out of TW, it keeps our guys fresh.

Solid move.

Alot of nice points you make regarding him. Too bad he still sucks.

He also isn’t very good so if he plays it’s good for us. Win/win for us both.

So the plan is to beef up the DL with Taysom Hill and Tyrunn Walker. Perhaps Fridge Perry is ready for a comeback.

What happened to the would be All Pro DT you were stashing on the practice squad? Are you telling me that a street free agent is coming in and starting over that guy? How is this possible?

The Rams signed Anderson because we had 1 healthy running back on the roster, and he was available because of some weird circumstances. Most street free agent pickups don't end up like that.

Dude, our entire line (and their backups) are all pros, and all of them are headed to the HOF (first ballot), but not before they make a quick stop in DC to eat Wendy’s and BK filet of fish with President Trump. Put some respekt on their names.

I don’t think Walker is going to start, but he will give us a few snaps, and when he does you guys will probably run at him to test him out, but then our #2 run defense is going to shut down Gurley and the ghost of Jerome Bettis.

Saints by 30, easy peasy, lemon ya mama.

I don’t know if Taysom would make much of an impact on the D-line, but whatever he gave you would be at 110%. He is an educated Rob Gronkowski. Some poor SOB defender is going to get truck sticked by him, and then in true Taysom Hill fashion he is going to help up the defender and ask “do you have a moment to hear a message about our lord and savior Jesus Christ?”
