After nearly two years of negotiating, the Los Angeles Rams finally rewarded Aaron Donald with a massive six-year, $135 million contract this offseason. It made him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history before Khalil Mack one-upped him, setting a new standard for players on that side of the ball.

He’s one of the most dominant players in the league regardless of position and has been for years, but his newfound money hasn’t changed him. He’s remained a game-wrecker at defensive tackle for the Rams, constantly commanding the attention of nearly every offensive lineman around him.

Through six games, he has four sacks and 17 total tackles, but his impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. If you count the number of holding penalties he’s drawn, too, you begin to see why the Rams were happy to lock him up for six more years.

There are also holds that go uncalled, too, which even Sean McVay admits officials are missing.

“You talk about an elite competitor, brings it every single day, the way that he approaches it. He, again, is one of those guys that’s what’s right about our building. He’s a special talent, special player, special person. All those things,” McVay said on ESPN LA 710. “And yeah, I agree with you. There’s a lot of holdings that aren’t getting called that should be, but if they flagged him every single play, the pace of play would be a little slow.”

Good to see him come out and say that. Hope it continues. Visibility on this will only help with the refs finally calling what is going on.

One point I noticed from last night's game was a lot of tipped passes at the line. Would get the D line focused on working into the passing lanes if getting held or well blocked

McVay just needs to chat up the refs pre-game and during the game about how SF cannot block AD. How nobody thus far can block him, and how he's held every play.

I keep mentioning Parcells for a reason. He would work the refs on the sidelines all game long, using sarcasm, wit, and humor. McVay's got a similar wit to him, get that thought embedded in their head about how AD cannot be stopped by the JAGs he's facing. Flags will follow IMO.

At home games they should get the guys running the screens to put the holds in a video loop to play during TV timeouts. Maybe McVay can get the film guys to do a montage.

Yes. Then Sean can make some jokes and jibes to point out the obvious to them. I like it.

I'm in on McVay talking more to the refs. I think it's part of his positive attitude philosophy that he does rag on the refs enough. Pete complaining all day Seahag was non stop two weeks ago.

I think i yell at the screen for opposing teams holding Donald every play. Then again, if they called it every time they should and stopped the game, McVay is right, that would get old just as quick.

I’m exactly the same, yelling at the screen. But if they started calling some of the holds perhaps the opposing D might just stop doing it so often

If you watch the NBA you will see HC's talk to refs all game long as they go up and down the court. They run by the coaches a zillion times a game. It's easier since they are right there, much closer than the NFL.

In the NFL the chances to interact are not as plentiful so I think different coaches use methods that are more of a bitch session. That doesn't fit McVay's personality. Most HC's in recent memory are not as positive and upbeat as he is so he doesn't rag on them as much as most coaches.

Maybe he can go Cowher and print the pics out and stuff them in the refs pocket.

Remember when he did that LOL........

If they want to get rid of holding almost completely implement a point system like the NBA has for technical fouls and when you compile enough you sit for a game.

Or just use my idea and have three guys in the backfield with two watching the OL. It would be a bumpy few weeks then the players would figure it out. They always do.

Why are holding calls not called more often?

(a) The games would be slowed down to a crawl because holding calls could technically be called on every play against every team.

(b) not allowing the O-lines to hold in order to protect their QB's goes against the mantra of the NFL, which is to protect their star players the quarterbacks.

For example, if Jared Goff had ended up like Jimmy G, this Sunday's game would pit Sean Mannion against CJ Beathard. How would the TV ratings look for a matchup like that?

I've actually been giving this a lot of thought. I've watched all of our games and I noticed a couple things re holding; One, the officials will often call a penalty on the offense a play after an egregious hold, ala the NBA "make up" call. Two, the holding I've seen is often occurring just as the defender is disengaging from the block. As we all know, "holding" is allowed while blocking, as long as the lineman's hands are "within the frame" of the defender, or from the shoulder pads in. As the defender makes his move to disengage, the blocker retains his grip for a second. I think this is allowed, as a kind of a "grace period". If the grip is released right away, or even a beat later, it does not draw a flag. If the grip is held longer, and/or you see the defender's jersey stretch, that draws a flag. So yes, there is "holding" on every play, but they are (imo, by design) letting O linemen get away with it. We just see it more because we have so many guys that create pressure, particularly up the middle. JMO

Nobody is saying they should call every holding that occurs, but they need to call the obvious, blatant ones where the DL has the OL beat to the QB and they put on a chest/choke hold or tackle them to the ground.

I just wish they’d call the hold when the refs see they have AD in a head lock or when Suh is being dragged to the ground from behind. Seems reasonable and not ticky-tack

I think that is a huge cop out. Also untrue. If the called it every time it happened. With all types of penalties, it would change how the were coached ( do it most the time they went call it) and the players would not do it as a natural way to play there positions. Everyone would be less confused and we would have world peace. Seriously though. If they called it, it would stop. This really started when belicheat coached this in the rams second superbowl. Coaches everywhere realized they could get away with it and we have what we have.

So officials are not calling every holding penalty they see, because it would make games too long? Which ones do they call then? If they see holding, call it, so what if it drags the game on. Call it every time until the team doing it is backed up into their locker room. Maybe they'll quit doing it then. I don't like the idea of them calling it whenever they feel like it. The timing of calls and non-calls comes off a game fixing.

Seems like letting teams get away with it play after play is proof of influencing games. They only call holding when games are close? Or when a favored team might not make the point spread? Or let teams keep doing it because one player is so fucking good they have to? Yeah that a fair way to play the game.

they're fucking the game up all right. For me anyway.
