Get real...Without Jared Goff we have Sean Mannion, and thay's a freakin disaster. We'd be the Jacksonville Jaguars with Mannion and thinking about the draft.

When did I say anything about Sean Mannion???

I made it clear I was talking about trading Goff/Donald for an average player at their respective positions. For Jared this would be like an Alex Smith-level player.

Sorry about that. I was thinking of the only was we'd lose Goff at the moment would be to injury. I consider the retention of Mannion is possible a season ender if Goff went down, and is a mistake that we have been lucky about.

Do you guys think with all the success AD is having that Suh feels a little dissapointed in himself? I mean we all thought that Suh would post great numbers this year as well playing alongside Donald and vice versa but the impact numbers wise hasn’t been there. Is Suh washed up or is he just taking a back seat on purpose to allow Donald to make the more splashy plays?
BTW AD is the DPOY and MVP (if he gets the sack record and we go 15-1)

No, AD is really just that much better than everyone else and it's not close.

On the strip sack, AD starts an outside move to get the double team moving laterally. Then he jump cuts inside (what other DL uses freaking JUMP CUTS!!! With swim moves no less!!!), splits the double team and because he's moving so fast, neither can anchor. He actually uses the double team as leverage to get to the QB.

It's safe to say we've NEVER seen anyone like this.

It's scary to imagine how good he's going to be the next few years, especially next year with a full training camp so he shouldn't be starting out without any stats the first 4 games like this year.

It's about time for a Defensive MVP! The last being Lawrence Taylor in 1986 and before that Alan Page in 1971. If Donald breaks the DT sack record of 18 that's one thing but if he can break Strahan's 22.5 sacks from the DT position it will be hard not to vote for him IMO.

This is the problem I have with the "could we win if we lost Goff or Gurley" question. The right way to measure Donald vs. Gurley vs. Goff is to ask what would happen if you replaced each of them with average starter at the position (not their backup).

If you replaced Goff with Stafford (16th ranked QB by one website) the dropoff would be noticeable but not huge. If you replaced Gurley with (say) Joe Mixon or Lamar Miller, the dropoff would be significant (but not disastrous). Now replace Donald with a mid tier tackle like Dean Lowry.

I think we we are 7-5 with Lowry. (losses to KC, Detroit, Denver, Seattle).

Disagree..You don't get to hand pick someones replacement during the season that measures "average" when an injury happens. This isn't a controlled lab experiment where you get to change variables, if you want to approximate real life.

You have a set number of possibilities on the team, unless you go crazy with a mid-season trade. THIS season if Goff went down, in week 4, Mannion would have tanked the season because he's not even adequate back up QB on this team . If Donald went down in Week 4, Suh could step in or a rotational player, not nearly as good, but I think we're a 9 win team. If Todd went down, 8-9 wins.

Why does injury have to be part of your evaluation process? And why does Donald or anyone else get punished just because of who the backups are at other positions? You're not determining the best player at that point.

By your logic, Brady should've never been in the MVP discussion during the 3 years Garoppolo was his backup. I know everyone around here hates Brady and all, but that's nonsense.

7 crazy stats that prove how clutch Aaron Donald is for the Rams
By: Cameron DaSilva

usatsi_11776887.jpg

Aaron Donald has been the talk of the league this season for his absolutely astonishing level of play. He leads the league in sacks (16.5), tackles for loss (20) and quarterback hits (32), somehow improving upon a season in which he won Defensive Player of the Year.

As long as he keeps up this torrid pace, he’s a lock to win the award again, but he’ll also be in the MVP discussion. Rams Wire’s Andrew Ortenberg broke down why he deserves to be a contender for MVP and the numbers are there to back it up.

He has 10.5 sacks in one-possession games
The best players rise to the occasion when the game is on the line. Donald certainly checks that box, performing at the highest level when the Rams are in one-possession games. This season, they’ve had six games decided by seven or fewer points. In those games, Donald has 10.5 sacks. In the six games decided by eight or more points, he has six sacks. If not for Donald’s dominance in those close games, the Rams might not be 11-1.

Rams are 16-0 in games when Donald has a sack since 2017
Since the start of last season, Donald has 27.5 sacks. Those sacks have all come in just 16 games, and incredibly, the Rams haven’t lost any of them. That’s right, when Donald has a sack, the Rams win. They’re 16-0 in such games since Sean McVay and Wade Phillips took over. In games where Donald doesn’t have a sack, they’re just 5-5. That’s as telling as it gets.

12 of his sacks have come in the second half, 8 in 4th quarter
As the game goes on, Donald gets better. Of his 16.5 sacks, only 4.5 have come in the first half with the other dozen coming after the break. Whether it’s because offensive linemen wear down or because Donald makes adjustments at the half, he’s better in the final 30 minutes than the first 30. Adding to that, nearly half of Donald’s sacks have come in the fourth quarter, which is often when the game is on the line.

Rams have scored TDs following all of his forced fumbles
Donald has forced four fumbles, which is two behind the league leader (Dee Ford) and tied for fourth in the NFL. He recovered one of those himself and Samson Ebukam took another back to the house for a touchdown, but every single time Donald has forced a fumble, the Rams have gotten a touchdown out of it. All of his forced fumbles have been recovered by L.A. and either been returned for a touchdown or led to a score on the ensuing possession.

Opponents have zero TDs on drives when Donald has a sack
Sacks are often drive-killers and that’s definitely the case with Donald. When he has a sack, you can almost bet your life that the Rams’ opponent won’t score a touchdown on that drive. It hasn’t happened yet and they’ve only picked up one first down on drives when he has a sack.

7.5 of his sacks have come against divisional opponents
The Rams have played four divisional games so far this season and Donald has typically been at his best in those contests. He had four sacks against the 49ers, 2.5 against the Seahawks in Week 10 and another one against Seattle in Week 5. The only NFC West game he didn’t have a sack in was against the Cardinals in Week 2. In total, he has 7.5 sacks against divisional opponents so far and nine sacks in the eight games against non-NFC West foes.

Only player with more than 4 double-digit sack games
Donald has had multiple sacks in six games this season, which is the most in the NFL. The next-closest player is Cameron Jordan with four, followed by Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt, who have three such games each. Von Miller, who’s second in the NFL with 12.5 sacks, has just two multi-sack games, for comparison.

No it's not. Jimmy G. is not that good in my opinion, as far as your Brady example. During a specific season with parameters of who's available on a team, the most best important players are the hardest to replace, no?

Hence, most valuable.

The whole question of who would be harder to replace due to a midseason injury unfairly stacks the deck for qbs. No team carries two starting grade qbs unless one of them is on a rookie contract. You don't get extra mvp points because you have a min wage backup. The measurement should be how much more valuable is a player to your team than an average starter in the league at the same position. Using that metric I'd grade AD most valuable, TG close second and third would be a toss up between Goff and Whitworth.

.

i just looked up the stats for the mvp last season.

week 13 - 258 yards 0 td 1 int 82.4 passer rating
week 14 - 233 yards 1 td 2 int 59.4 passer rating
week 15 - 298 yards 1 td 1 int 87.6 passer rating
week 16 - 224 yards 2 td 1 int (returned for td) 106.8 passer rating
week 17 - 190 yards 2 td 0 int 82 passer rating

have you ever seen such average stats by a qb?

meanwhile gurley was playing out of his mind, taking over games and considered mvp by everyone.

let's face it, these clowns that vote for the mvp have some fucked up ideas on what is the mvp. we've all seen it in articles about the mvp, their thinking means only a qb can win it in their minds.

I voted Goff. Though I would love to see any of our 3 deserving candidates win.

I think Brees pads his stats in the very circumstances where McVay dials back Goff.

I do not believe in the whole mentality “one player splits the votes of another” on the same team. That’s BS.

And @Mojo Ram I am ashamed of you! ....Wilson.....sheesh.

Ranking the top-10 defenders in the NFL through Week 13
BY MICHAEL RENNER

The race for the Defensive Player of the Year is all but over. Aaron Donald could sit out the rest of the season, and his ridiculous 17 sacks would lock up the award. Let’s take a look at the other defenders having outstanding seasons who have put themselves squarely in contention for the Defensive Player of the Year (Not Named Aaron Donald).

Miller had a slow start to the 2018 season, but there was little doubt he’d bounce back. He’s registered 10 sacks in his last seven games, notching at least one in every single outing. No one gets game planned for more because teams know where he’s going to line up (over 75 percent of his snaps have come off right tackle) and it still doesn’t matter. He’s posted double-digit sacks now in every healthy season of his career.

There’s not a better slot cornerback in the NFL today. The name of the game at the position is picking off passes and limiting yards after catch, and King does both at a high level. He has three picks so far this season and has allowed only 19 first downs on 59 targets. 47 other cornerbacks have allowed more first downs while only 29 have been targeted more. King’s 15 coverage stops are also the second most of any corner in the league.

There’s not a better pass-rushing nose tackle in the NFL than Clark at the moment. If you leave Clark one-on-one with your center, it’s not going to end well. Against the Rams, the third-year defensive tackle made John Sullivan, one of the best centers in the league, look like a backup. He registered two sacks, a hit and three hurries in that outing against the Rams. It was one of three times this season that he notched six pressures in a single game.

You can pencil in Kuechly for a spot on this list every year. Kuechly is once again the NFL’s leader with a 12.8 run-stop percentage, but it’s his work in coverage that will never get old to watch. Of the 39 times he’s been targeted this season, only 13 have resulted in first downs. His 17 coverage stops are the fifth most among all linebackers in the league, and he’s missed only two tackles on receivers.

He’s back. It’s not quite vintage, 20-sack J.J. Watt, but he’s still on pace for 16 for the year. For all the injuries he’s suffered since his last full season, that’s pretty damn impressive. The scary thing is he’s been getting better and better as the season has worn on. He has 17 pressures in his last three outings and seven run stops. I think the Texans’ defense might have missed him last year just a little.

What Fletcher Cox is to the passing game, Hicks is to the run game. He continually moves the line of scrimmage and has been the only person that can even be brought up in the same breath as Damon Harrison in terms of run defense. Unlike Harrison, though, Hicks can hold his own as a pass-rusher. The Bears lineman ranks 12th among interior defensive linemen with 35 pressures this season.

If it weren’t for Donald’s dominance, we’d be talking a lot more about Cox’s dominance. While Cox is 18 pressures behind Donald for interior defensive linemen, he’s also 13 pressures ahead of third place. His 19 quarterback hits are the most in the entire NFL, as he’s been hands down the best bull-rushing threat in the league. Cox is the poster boy for disruption being more valuable than counting stats, as he continually impacts more plays than his tackles and sacks would indicate.

If you’ve read anything about Wagner on here this season, I’m sure you’ve heard that he still hasn’t missed a tackle on 98 attempts. That stat is indicative of just how reliable Wagner is as a linebacker. He isn’t going to get caught out of position. Wagner’s been downgraded at the second lowest rate of any starting linebacker in the NFL. It’s hard to play the position much better than Wagner has this season.

Jackson’s breakout campaign has been one of the most impressive we’ve ever seen from the safety position – and it’s not solely because of his playmaking ability. He’s notched four picks and three touchdowns already, but he’s also limited big plays at a high level. Jackson Has yielded only 21 catches into his coverage this season at an average of 11.3 yards per catch.

His 84 pressures so far this season are more than any other defender (not named Aaron Donald) had in 2017. Donald is on his own level.

Just heard Mike Pierera (sp) on TNF. He stated the refs are instructed to call more holding calls as of this week. Techniques linemen are using that are illegal are now going to be called.
Hopefully good news for Ad.

That's the best news I've heard in forever if it's true. I bet it will turn out to bite is on the butt though.
