Rams News: Injury updates on Darrell Henderson, Sebastian Joseph Day, and Tyler Higbee

By Blane Dydasco@BlaneDydasco Feb 8, 2022,
Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay gave injury updates on Monday and it was mostly positive. Running back Darrell Henderson Jr appears ready to go for Sunday and so does defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph Day. Tight end Tyler Higbee is still questionable.

The running back group would be stronger than they’ve been all season with all three backs, Sony Michel, Cam Akers, and Darrell Henderson ready to contribute. However, Akers was held out of practice last week listed with a shoulder injury so that is still in question. Michel led the way as the starter for seven games and posted 845 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the season. Michel’s best game was against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16 when he put up 131 yards. Henderson was the starter for 10 games and produced 688 yards rushing on the season. Henderson’s best game was against the Houston Texans in Week 8 where he rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown.

After what seemed to be a season ending injury suffered in the preseason, Akers returned for the playoff push and has played in all three post season games. Against the Arizona Cardinals in the Wildcard round, Akers had a total of 95 yards from scrimmage which included a 40 yard catch from an Odell Beckham Jr pass.

Tyler Higbee’s 61 catches on the season is the second most on the Rams to Cooper Kupp. He will be missed for this catching an blocking contributions if he can’t go. The good news would be that he back up Kendall Blanton has seem some action and done well while being tested over the last two games. He caught the first touchdown agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers which was also his first touchdown of his career. Against the San Francisco 49ers Blanton had five catches over five targets for 57 yards and an 11.4 yards per catch average.

McVay: "Good chance" Sebastian Joseph-Day, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Robert Rochell will be ready to go for Super Bowl LVI; plus updates on Tyler Higbee and Joe Noteboom

Rams head coach Sean McVay said "there is a good chance" that defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, running back Darrell Henderson Jr. and cornerback Robert Rochell will be ready to go for Super Bowl LVI against the Bengals.

McVay then said it's "looking optimistic" for Joseph-Day and Henderson's return from injury heading into Super Bowl LVI against the Bengals.

All three players have been in the window to be moved off of Injured Reserve onto the active roster since Jan. 21. Joseph-Day has been working his way back from a pec injury sustained in Week 8 against the Texans that required surgery; Henderson an MCL sprain sustained in Week 16 against the Vikings, and Rochell a chest injury sustained in Week 13 against the Jaguars.

Prior to the injury, Joseph-Day tallied 38 total tackles and a career-high three sacks in seven games (all starts). Henderson collected 149 carries for 688 yards and a team-high five touchdowns in 12 games before his setback, while Rochell had 14 total tackles, an interception and four pass breakups in 11 games (five starts).

McVay also said the Rams are taking things a day at a time with tight end Tyler Higbee (MCL sprain) and offensive lineman Joe Noteboom (chest), so there's no change in their statuses at this time. McVay said he would have a better idea of their availability closer to the game.

I'm a little worried about Hendy's return diluting that RB duo we have been settling in with. But hopefully he'll just be up for depth and only given minimal carries.

Really hope Higs can go, though I am also excited to see a little Blanton. Boom being available would be great for depth and maybe extra lineman if they decide to mix it up on Cincy. This might be where that training staff is that gift that keeps giving.

Dear Lord it's only Tuesday. :clock:

Henderson is good depth. If all are healthy, he should only see the field if someone needs a breather. I doubt McVay will try get each 1/3 of the carries.

As always in playoff football, despite all the hype, I think it can come down to who runs the ball better. Cincy needs to run the ball to stay balanced and slow our pass rush. The Rams want to run the ball to keep it away from Burrow and open up big plays downfield.
As long as McVay and Stafford are patient and aren't trying to force big play downfield (with deep safety play) the Rams should be able to move the ball. As long as the OL holds up.....and I do expect some blitzing and coverage wrinkles from the Bengals....the Rams should be able to move the ball.
Hopefully McVay and his QB dont get tight like vs NE.
What I worry about most with the Bengals is Burrow checking down to the RBs who then break tackles.
Have to tackle and our LBs have to be better in coverage.

Sound like a sound decision to me.

Eric Weddle can have a great effect during the game with his knowledge & great play awareness whereas MLB Troy Reeder just lacks the overall talent.

We all know that Cincy will want to one up on Troy Reeder with their two RB's in the passing game. Having to deal with a healthy Jones/Howard @ ILB'er will put a big amount of difficulty in that passing attack utilizing those RB's. Two very quick & fast ILB'ers to go with that front five is DC Morris dream.

This is good. More Jones. Reeder will still get in there too.

I would have asked Weddle about the final play in the NFCCG where he was lined up on top of Scott who had to push him over at the snap. Was that a miscommunication? Did he read something wrong? Hopefully someone will ask that of him or Morris.

The larger the group of people the dumber the "herd" gets. I suspect this is a universal truth.

Yeah. Reddit. I get sick of the prevailing toxic 12 year-old mentality and bail on it, then come back every now and then, only to get reminded why I'm away from there. Some good subs where the kids aren't interested, like whiskey etc, but sports and politics can be a cesspool of middle schoolers on meth.

Naming Weddle as the defensive signal caller is critical against a team with a great qb and receivers. He is one of the best safeties ever, and even more elite for his smarts. This is the exclamation point for his career and for the Rams.

Greetings Rams Fans.

First, thanks for allowing me the opportunity to join and have good discussions about the big game!

As a Bengals fan, obviously rooting for Cincy to win, but realize it will be a massive task for them against an experienced, veteran team that is excellent in many aspects of the game.

Everyone already knows about the extreme mismatch of Rams defensive front vs Cincy OL. The right side of Cincy OL has been getting manhandled.

Not sure if you are aware, but starting RT Reilly Reiff got hurt late in the season forcing Cincy to roll with Isiah Prince the backup. Not sure how/why Prince is 2nd string backup and not lower, but he has been getting beaten often in many ways. Prince is going to have to play the game of his life in this one against your guys' monsters up front.

RG Adeniji has been getting beaten like a drum often. Completely whiffing on blocks, letting people have free runs, being bull rushed easily straight into the pocket, and missed communications have been his MO. I'd rather the Bengals play rookie Carman there. Yes, Carman is prone to penalties and rookie mistakes, but dude is an absolute mauler in screens and run game. We'll see how Cincy plays that position.

Browsing this thread, I saw a couple posters mention the thought of having Ramsey shadow Tee Higgins and then bracketing/doubling Chase. Honestly, I think that is an excellent strategy. Ramsey would likely completely shut out Higgins, and Chase's opportunities get drastically reduced when he's doubled. Ramsey is the best lockdown corner in the game, and would obviously have success 1v1 on Chase. However, Chase 1v1 will still get his at times; not that I think he would have a big game against Ramsey (not likley), but he'll still make a big play or two.

Rams forcing the Bengals to use Boyd, Perrine, Uzomah (if he plays 100%) would be ideal for you. Although, don't sleep on Boyd. He has "sticky" hands, can make a lot of clutch catches, and can take it to the house as well.

Of course, if Burrow is on his back all game, I don't think you'll have to worry much about that.

Also, Whitworth has always been one of my favorite players. That guy has the perfect amount of meanstreak/toughnes/leadership you could want at that position. Was obviously sad to see him leave Cincy, but glad to see him go enjoy some success and get to play in now his 2nd SB. If Cincy doesn't win, I can at least be happy for him, after a proper grieving period of course, Lol.

My prediction:
either a Rams blowout (ala Cards WC game) or a close game. I can tell you though, if it's a close game, don't be surprised if the Bengals steal it or at least make it very exciting. They have done that stuff many times this season (exciting comebacks, finishes, a lot of action win or lose; both KC games, the wild OT games vs Packers/49ers, their playoff games etc.).

Anyhow, sorry about the long post. Just super excited for this Sunday, and hoping for some good discussions/insights about a team from the people who know them most, the Rams fans.

If......sorry, WHEN the Rams win the Weddle signing has to be the best partial year contract return in NFL history I would think. He has been a huge benefit and I would like his to stay with the team as a coach if nothing else. The Rams have talent in the D back field but they seems out of sorts all. year and Weddle apparently has helped tighten that up.

Yes he and Scott have had a good effect on the secondary. I would also say that it probably settled down Morris as well. Gives him confidence that his players are going to line up correct and execute properly. Changes everything for him. Probably changes the calls he would make.

So the Ram's most powerful unit their very experienced defensive front five is going to let this inexperienced Cincy young line have a big game against them? Sports Media people just can not live in the real world, can they? I realize Bill Calahan is one of the better Coaches in the NFL but I have seen this OL perform in the post-season.......truth is Cincy is very lucky Joe is still able to walk.
