ORLANDO – The Jets pulled their offer to potential difference maker/divisive force free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh, prompting inquiring minds to wonder exactly why Gang Green did an about-face.
CEO and Chairman Christopher Johnson dropped the bombshell Sunday at the annual NFL meetings by revealing that his team was no longer in the running to land the biggest fish left in the free agency pond.
“On reflection in concert with Mike (Maccagnan), we’ve rescinded the offer to Suh,” Johnson said. “It just didn’t seem to be in keeping with our longer term.”
The move was puzzling in the wake of rumblings that the Jets were the highest bidder to land the mercurial three-time All-Pro defensive tackle cut by the Dolphins two weeks ago.
What exactly changed from the moment that Gang Green extended their offer to now?
Suh’s reputation on and off the field have been evident for years. He might not be the same dominant player he used to be, but there’s little doubt that the 31-year-old would have been an effective piece to Todd Bowles’ defensive puzzle.
“I had a lot of discussion with Mike about this and I think that our thinking just changed a bit,” Johnson said. “That’s where I have to leave it.”
Johnson’s admission curiously omitted Bowles, who evidently had told Suh precisely how he planned to use him in his scheme. The Jets CEO later conceded that he didn’t discuss pulling the offer with his head coach before the organization officially bailed out.
“Saying I stepped in is somewhat overstating the case,” Johnson said. “But in discussion with Mike, looking into what our plan is, it became apparent to the two of us that this just didn’t work.”

Perhaps that’s semantics, but Johnson, who said that he was not involved in the initial decision to make an offer to Suh, clearly took issue with bringing aboard the veteran.
Truth be told, there are fair reasons for Gang Green not to add Suh, whose hefty salary and issues in Miami’s locker room ultimately led to his ouster. The Dolphins were willing to take a $22.2 dead money cap hit spread over the next two seasons just to get rid of him.
Gang Green’s initial interest in Suh seemed a bit surprising. The Jets, after all, spent last year re-making their locker room culture by infusing the place with young, hungry, team-first players. Adding a guy purged during Miami’s culture cleansing appeared odd.
Suh, who had 15 ½ sacks in three seasons with the Dolphins, also wasn’t going to come cheap.
“It was a pretty high offer,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if it was the highest of his offers. I have no idea… It’s a lot of money. All these good guys are going to be a lot of money. And he’s one of the best football players out there.”
Johnson’s admission that “it was a decision that I made with Mike” prompted some to wonder what changed in the past several days? And why Bowles wasn’t a part of this meeting of the minds.
Suh’s red-flags notwithstanding, he would have been a contributor for the Jets, who were looking to add another piece along the defensive line after Muhammad Wilkerson was cut. He probably would have made them better on the field this season. Regardless, Suh, who has also drawn interest from the Rams, Saints and Titans, won’t be a Jet.
The boss has spoken.

I thought it was strange that they were in it to begin with. Just a strange that they bailed but, I guess it's better now than after signing him. Who knows maybe they offered way more than the other teams and felt they had to bail. They didn't let the coach know. Good for the Rams.
