Who won that trade in the end? Rams

Without the ring, the Lions would have won this trade by a lot IMO. Goff and Stafford are a lot closer then they were and Goff has youth. Make no mistake, Stafford is superior, but, the gap isn't massive.

I’ll take the Super Bowl and higher level of QB play. However that trade has the potential to really pay off for Detroit.

I think Sam Laporta is going to be a beast. In the end, a superbowl win is going to be the thing I remember most. they reached out and grabbed it. Nothing beats that.

The gap massive enough for that final drive vs Tom Brady and the Buccs to tamp down Tampa Bay with a final soul snatching drive. He was clutch in the Super Bowl to do a no-look pass when we absolutely had to have it to win. The gap is wide as the Grand Canyon to me.

Goff needed a kick in the ass. The trade had to be made. Stafford the offensive leader and AD the defensive leader take the Rams to a Super Bowl win!

The end results are not in.

Nice haul for the Lions. Goff gets serious about football and now has another chance at a SB.

Yes, it is.

Thankfully it’s done! Hopefully Snead doesn’t get a wild hair up his ass and try something stupid like trade 2 1sts for a guy like Burns from the Panthers again. Thank God the Panthers are fucking retarded.

Why does it have to be a winner and a loser. I think it was a win-win for all parties involved.

Stafford got to play for a winner and in meaningful games. The Rams got a Super Bowl ring largely because of Stafford. Goff got out from under a coach that was trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and resurrected his career under coaches that play to his strengths. Detroit got a lot of draft capital that Brad Holmes has used very wisely.

Win-win.

You can have 4x years of great teams and not win a title. Winning a title is fucking tough. Us getting that done for McVay to validate his program not to mention AD and his HoF career... It was worth everything. Stafford coming in and playing like that and willing us to the win with Kupp on that drive was icing on the cake.

Not only was it a championship but it was a title of epic levels with multiple final-drive victories to survive the playoffs. One of the most remarkable Super Bowl runs I can recall but of course I am biased. :startstruck:

Wondering if the OP was overstating the Lions haul?

I went on a Lions message board to see what they think of the trade. No clear answers yet, but I saw several different variations of the "final" trade results, such as:

Lions give up:

  • Stafford
  • 2022 #34
  • 2022 #66
  • 2023 #81
Lions get:

  • Goff
  • Melifonwu
  • Jamo
  • Paschal
  • Gibbs
  • LaPorta
  • 2023 #168
My point being, sounds like the Lions didn't get that ENTIRE haul just for Stafford. By trading with other teams, the Lions also GAVE UP some additional premium picks to as well. Lions had to give up a 2nd and two 3rds.

(And yeah, any trade that results in a SB victory sounds good to me.)

'99 run included a comfortable playoff win (Minny) followed by TWO insane nail-biters (Tampa and Tennessee.)

'21 run included a comfortable playoff win (Ariz) followed by THREE insane nail-biters (Tampa, SF, Cincy).

THREE crazy-close games back-to-back-to back... still find it hard to believe how it happened.

Yes, it is.
You could just as well say: "Stafford needed a kick in the ass. The trade had to be made. Stafford only took the Lions to the playoffs three times in twelve years and lost every game."

Seriously, the trade is a win-win. The Rams got what they wanted--- a Super Bowl win. The Lions have rebuilt due in no small part to Goff.

But it's still too soon to see how the trade may finally play out.

Strangely enough, with that trade the Lions are about to go further then Stafford could take them in over a decade. It also allowed Goff to once again validate his ability to lead a top offense, while showing Stafford just needed more help.

It really is a win win.

Both teams got what they wanted. We shipped future premium picks to get us over the hump of Super Bowl participants to Super Bowl winners for a year.

We were a mature team needing what Stafford gave us in the clutch big games. And boy did he come up clutch in the biggest moments.

Meanwhile the Lions rebuild is looking real strong. It is still TBD if they can ultimately get a ring or two.
