I am only counting the 1 special teams flub on the coach. The run on the punt was unforgiveable due to the previous attempts.

The other two were execution.

1. An amazing job by punter and gunner to have perfect timing and throw.
2. An onside kick that was kicked perfect getting a solid bounce that our guy could not field.

Excellent? 21 catches in 7 games is ok and I love the kid was surprised we kept Woods this off season. But again McVay stressed needing speed on offense added two speed WR's and they get very very little work. Van is good and could get better with more PT but excellent 3rd WR isn't what comes to mind for a guy I like a lot. Now back to the ST discussion of the thread.

Kupp getting such a large target share would make any third WRs numbers look that way. But he's been a really good player and has been effective.

The draft is also for the future so not concerned about Atwell not playing - in fact, with our top four WRs I'd be disappointed if he did need to play offense.

As to Atwell on special teams - I think hes been decent returning punts. Rather not have him return kicks as the collisions tend to be more violent. The KR plans for the season were Calais and then Funk - not sure how many teams can roll out an effective KR when their top two options go down for the season.

He's a WR4 who is learning the offense. So it's appropriate to trot him out there until he blows snot bubbles. And even after as long as he can handle it.

If we could get one field flip every couple games from a good return this team would be even tougher. Not sure if he's good enough to do that, but why not have him handling ALL returns.

At 7.4 yards a return that's adequate but hardly impressive. But you have to look beyond the numbers and wonder why McVay doesn't trust him when the punt will be caught inside the 10-20 yard line. You always see Kupp back for those. That's a problem or at least it gives the perception of a lack of trust. McVay has even said when sure hands are needed Kupp will be back there.

Because the dude is a liability and as I’ve been spelling out since TC there is multiple red flags there with Tutu.

I guess this can also be a vent thread, but the special teams needs to be addressed, badly.
Aside from our kicker and punter, who are great, the rest of special teams is a disaster this year.

I mean, we got fooled 3 times today on trick plays, that has to be a record.
First time is forgivable, but the other 2 times, no.

So is it the coaching, or some of the players, or what? And how do we fix this mess?
Ps why is a raider your avatar? You are raider fan now?

I don't deny any of that. But who's a better option. At least he has some raw talent. Maybe he'll get better if they keep trotting him out there.

That is a good point. Something unique? How about giving Van Jefferson a chance back there?

I’d be interested to see what he could do back there.
No need to bait a topic that is known to be toxic. Stick to the convo please.

It’s not bait, we are talking about what has so far turned out to be an unproductive pick that plays on special teams, am I missing how it’s bait or anything else? Just because some won’t face the music like the didnt with Goff 2 years ago doesn’t make it not true man.

Agreed, but you would have thought after the fist "flub" the couch would have been on their ears reminding them no more F'ups

Bad day for STs, sure, but remember the injuries we’ve had has hurt special teams. And hand it to Detroit for pulling the trigger on trickery so early in the game. I don’t fault our STs for the onside kick or the first fake punt. The 2nd fake punt was horrible though. Our return game is sad so that’s got to get better. We should never bring a ball out of the end zone right now.

No doubt. I am sure that's why Mcvay looked like he was about to go all Michael Myers on someone.

Van's a leading candidate to help elevate this offense. I don't know that Van back there would be wise, any more than it is to risk Kupp.

Tutu hasn't broken any big runs. But he also hasn't fumbled. And he's low on the roster so risk his ass all you can and cross your fingers that he can grow and improve at it. The guy isn't doing shit else. I'm not of the mind that he's any kind of slam dunk but right now he seems like our best option outside of the fact McVay doesn't trust him in certain situations. If he does improve, well, then we get a big boost because our teams have sucked ass for more than a year now.

Wondering if McVay is having any regrets about letting Bones get away to Dallas.
Oh he regrets it. This is where him being so young and all factors in. I am sure that taught him a good lesson. And if this ST coach doesn't improve he's gonna learn that same lesson again.

Well and he might also pile that on top of the ol' friend hire lesson with Morris. Though I'm not totally sure about that yet I still think Morris might be a secret genius or something. :laugh4:

Watch Scott on the fake punt pass he leaves the guy on the sideline wide open and is running towards the middle of the field while the ball is in the air.
Well, considering the LS hit him with the punt snap against INDY and he STILL proceeded upfield, are you really surprised? He is hot garbage.
