should have mounted some asteroid blasting photon beams on that thing...my guess is it's going to be knocked out of service within 3 years
Exactly what I was going say. I guess that would have made it go more than the reported 1000% over budget.

Webb’s Fine Guidance Sensor Provides a Preview

fgs2_1445_20220601_TS_newflat_JRstretch_crop-1200x1145.jpg

This Fine Guidance Sensor test image was acquired in parallel with NIRCam imaging of the star HD147980 over a period of eight days at the beginning of May. This engineering image represents a total of 32 hours of exposure time at several overlapping pointings of the Guider 2 channel. The observations were not optimized for detection of faint objects, but nevertheless the image captures extremely faint objects and is, for now, the deepest image of the infrared sky.

Edit: Eff this. "Will begin momentarily" for half an hour. I'll just wait for tomorrow...

The time has finally come... like Christmas day for the astronomy community, NASA will today share with the world one of the anticipated first-ever images produced by the newly launched James Webb Space Telescope (opens in new tab) (JWST)!

US President Joe Biden is expected to release one of Webb’s first images today, in a live stream preview event directly from the White House in Washington.

This is just the very beginning of what we can expect on Tuesday 12 July at 07:30 PT / 10:30 ET / 15:30 BST as all images from the JWST will be unveiled by NASA live for the world to see.
