Darrell Henderson Jr.’s fantasy stock has been all over the place this year due to a season-ending injury suffered by Cam Akers and then the Rams’ eventual acquisition of Sony Michel just before Week 1. He went from looking like the clear workhorse back when Akers went down, but his chances of being that decreased when Michel arrived.

It’s only been one game, but Henderson received a healthy dosage of touches against the Bears in Week 1, carrying it 16 times for 70 yards and catching one pass for 17 yards. He played 94% of the offensive snaps, while Michel played only 6% (three plays).

Michel didn’t even get in the game until late in the fourth quarter when he got his first carry, a 2-yard run. Sean McVay explained why Michel’s role was so limited, predictably pointing to the “flow of the game,” but also suggesting that Henderson’s efficiency gave the Rams confidence in giving him most of the snaps.

“I would say, I have confidence in Sony but the way that Darrell was running, kind of the flow of the game like we talked about. Darrell has definitely established himself as our starting back. I thought he did a great job,” McVay said. “I thought he got stronger as the game went, but Sony’s a guy that’s had production in this league. It was just a weird deal the way that the game kind of unfolded. That’s why I always say that to you guys and yesterday was reflective of exactly that.”

McVay said the Rams planned to get Michel involved in the game earlier than they did, but considering they only ran 50 plays to the Bears’ 69, there weren’t many snaps to go around at running back. Not to mention, Matthew Stafford had two long touchdown passes for quick strikes at the beginning of each half, leading to shorter drives. Only three of the Rams’ seven possessions that weren’t kneeldowns were longer than six plays.

There simply weren’t many opportunities to take Henderson out and plug in Michel, and there was little reason to with Henderson averaging a healthy 4.4 yards per carry.

“We had planned to get Sony in the game a little bit earlier, but just based on the minimal amount of snaps that we had – a lot of it for good reasons because we were scoring quickly – but then we ended up having the three-and-out at the end of the first half,” McVay continued. “You’d like to be able to sustain more drives and then maybe you’ll see him get some more opportunities. But again, that’s always kind of based on how the flow of the game goes. But I thought Darrell did a really good job and I was pleased with the way that he closed it out. And I thought our offensive line really did a nice job of finishing it out. To be able to sustain the drive, have some of the third-down conversions that we did was really encouraging. But you can expect to see a little bit more of Sony, but if a game unfolds like that, I think we’d take a similar approach.”

It wasn’t initially clear how the workload would be broken up between Henderson and Michel, but there’s little doubt about who is the No. 1 running back in Los Angeles. It’s Henderson, and that likely won’t change unless he begins to struggle.

Assuming both stay healthy I've assumed it'll be a roughly 75% to 25% split between DH and Michel after he gets fully acclimated to the offense. Somewhere around 22-25 carries to 8-10 carries a game for DH and SM by mid-October. Will depend on how the game is going but that's what I've expected since we traded for him. We got him for insurance and rotation and hopefully it stays that way because I'm excited to see DH stay healthy for a whole season.

I'm actually hoping that Michel plays so well when he gets his chances that it forces more of a 60/40 split. If he can give the Rams the same kind of production that Henderson does, it means less workload for their #1 and likely a healthier back at the end of the season.

I still suspect Michel was make significant contributions to this team yet. Henderson will get hurt. If you want to try and avoid that, all the more reason to use Michel. He also brings a different style of running that, depending on the week, can be advantageous. I don't think the Rams give up those picks if the plan was to have Sony warm the bench the vast majority of the time. We'll see him soon enough IMO. Especially once he picks up the system.

Like I just mentioned in the other thread the scheme calls are different over here. So he will need a little time. If he's really smart then maybe he's already got it all down but I would think he'll need a few more games to have everything down so he's playing and not thinking.

I still see a 1A/1B RB situation. Henderson deserves to be 1A and will be given the opportunity with a close eye on his health. Michel will definitely increase touches as the season progresses.

If one player starts balling out he will become the lead back. The bottom line for everything truly comes down to what will help the Rams win.

But you could see clear roles emerge. For example, Sony more short yardage and passing downs due to his blitz pickup ability and Hendo more of a first and second down back.

For my sake I'm hoping for Henderson to have the bigger role due to him being my backup RB on my fantasy team.

Sony Michel had a 3 snaps and carried the ball 1 time for 2 yards.

His pass pro looked like a new player in a new offense.

A little birdie mocked Sony the other day saying the Rams had no confidence in him because he was unable to earn their trust after being on the team for 18 days before kickoff vs the Bears.

The birdie chirped again and said Sony was not up to speed even though had almost 3 weeks to get up to speed.

The birdie explained that the Ravens signed Latavius Murray only 3 days before the Ravens played their first game and he showed out.

The birdie also said the Ravens signed free agent RB Ty’Son Williams 15 days before their first game and he showed out.

This birdie is a fantasy football die hard friend of mine.

He told me we have no RB depth and we are in big trouble if Hendo misses multiple games.

I shrugged and told him to keep playing fantasy because reality will kick in when Sony breaks out in the next few games.

I ended up flipped him off with the birdie and now I'm waiting for Sony to get his carries and show out in the coming weeks.

Ideally i'd like to see a 60/40 split with Sony getting the starts and keeping Darrell explosive, strong and healthy.

Sorry. What’s the point of this posting. NFL coaches should listen to “die hard” fantasy football owners or you need friends who don’t incensently chirp in your ear??

The Rams offense is one of the most complicated in the league for sure. It will likely take a bit before he gets comfortable. I bet it's another month before he really hits his stride with us.

My PS5 disagrees STRONGLY... and it comes in Rams colors! Bone with blue!

My Xbox Series X and my games disagree emphatically. It may not be in Rams colors, but it plays my games without any problems and doesn't cost an absolute fortune.

Sony sounded downright depressed in his interview in a Preseason game. Sounded like he felt personally hurt that the Patriots traded him. Hope he's able to adjust and get comfortable and start enjoying himself here.

Odd. A lot of players are happy to leave NE behind. Belo hicks practices are supposedly brutal for conditioning.
