I'm still hoping for Royce Freeman. Someone suggested that on here and it made perfect sense to me. He can pass block, catch passes, and provide a big back at the goal line. I'm not sure Denver has any interest in trading him or cutting him however. Though they do have 3 solid backs, including a future bell cow back (Williams), so its possible. I'd offer a 5th and see if that gets it done.

Suggesting that though, we really have no idea what we have in Jones or Funk at this point. When you have zero blocking in front of you, you could be an All Pro and not get yards. This is why I really wish McVay would play that starters for a series or 2 during the preseason so we can actually evaluate our guys with starters all around them. I mean, Mahomes plays in the preseason....

Even if they were to add Morris (or another early cut option) it wouldn't mean they can't try to claim someone better in a couple weeks. But for now get a look at him and maybe it balances things in the backfield.

Alfred Morris cut. He's a good option as he ran behind a crap Giants O line last year. I didn't watch a lot of him, but if he can blitz pick up, I'd ask we kick the tires.

Sensei, it is also said one must reflect on the entirety of the post before we jump to conclusions: "I'd ask we kick the tires."

This means tell him we may be interested, and not make him an offer.

Also he has the McVay connection from Washington. At this point I bet we are waiting to add a veteran signing later in camp. It was hard to evaluate Funk and Jones behind the horrible run blocking on Saturday but regardless I'd bet a lot we add one more back for more depth. In 2018 the CJ Anderson signing worked out so I have faith in this FO to sign the right guy who still has some tread left.

I don't remember a lot about Morris......was he a good blocker at all?

Compared to who we have now, everybody's a good blocker.

Wow I didn't realize AlMo was even still in the league. He's unstoppable! Wait that was in 2012....

Voted No because the o-line had defenders in the backfield when the ball was handed off. Not sure how you evaluate running backs if that is consistently happening. It would be a rush to judgment
Exactly right. They have a metric for this. In 2018 Gurley had 1 yard before first contact last season it was 6" before first contact. Hard to evaluate talent when the OL can't hold their block or get a push so a DL man is not hitting the back before he can get going.

Also two of our three guys have zero total NFL regular season game carries between them.

They may well be terrific this year... but, just in case, how about adding someone who is a proven, experienced, physical pass blocker for Stafford and a consistent ball carrier?

Akers was a huge loss.

A strong running game is critical to what the Rams want to do on offense. So much of the off-season discussion about Stafford was that he rarely had an effective running game in Detroit. A lot of posters here questioned whether Henderson was a good enough #2 RB. He's going to need help. Maybe Jones or Funk can contribute. However, I think the Rams must add a veteran RB by the end of Pre-season or early Regular Season; and I think they know it.

All that being said, Urgency could make the right move more difficult.

There's no reason for McVay to publicly express any urgency. That would serve no purpose. It could undermine the current (young) RBs on the roster; and make a minor transaction more difficult. If a team has a RB on its bubble and sees urgency from the Rams, getting that player could be more challenging and costly.

So the way to play it is exactly how the Rams are playing it ... publicly state "Don't panic, all is well."

Sean McVay is personable and engaging; and just like the miserable / obnoxious / ugly fuck that is Bill Belichick, McVay says Nothing. He just says nothing in a much nicer and more charming manner.

RBs tend to come available. "That Guy was Cut!"
C.J Anderson was just out there ... released twice during the 2018 season ... got picked-up and fit in great.

If a team is ready to move-off a veteran RB, it may be happy to get a 6th round pick from the Rams instead of an out-right release. However, the Rams don't want that team ... sensing desperation ... asking for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

I don't know what type of RB the Rams may target. My guess is that they will look for someone with a running style that fits what they want to do. Akers and Henderson struck me as one-cut-and-go RBs. I don't think that someone like Le' Veon Bell fits that style.
You nailed the situation. I’d like to think the Rams will add a RB immediately after final cuts. Odds of getting who they may be watching might go down by then unless they do work a low grade trade. I’ll be somewhat surprised if they don’t add a short yardage back by Week One.

Go back and watch Akers run behind bad blocking plays. He still gained 1, 2 or 3 yards when getting stonewalled. Malcolm Brown as well.

These kids aren't the answer no matter what's going on in front of them.

Broncos used 3rd round choice on Royce Freeman in 2018 and he's outperformed by UDFA rookie Phillp Lindsey.
In 2019 Lindsey maintains the starting role averaging 4.5 ypc while Freeman averages 3.8 ypc
In 2020 the Broncos bring in Melvin Gordon.
And this past draft they use a 2nd round choice on Javonte Williams after signing RB Mike Boone in free agency.

Is Royce Freeman really any good? Or are the Broncos clueless?

Honestly the running backs don’t concern me at all. I’m more concerned with our run blocking but until I see the first unit blocking I’m not worried about that either. We had a lot of 3rd stringers and camp bodies on the line last week.

Patience. I imagine that Snead is watching every team in the NFL who are deep in the position. Either in the final cut before the season or nabbing a guy off a practice squad. Meanwile, we watch our 3rd string Oline to see if their play can provide better clarity for the guys we already have. R-E-L-A-X.

Speculation that David Johnson may get cut. I'd be willing to kick the tires on him.
He was so good in Bruce Arians' offense but man idk. Watched a lot of him beyond those years and his legs and desire looked shot to me. Hard to say.

I've been one of the earliest panic complainers that the Rams need to add a RB or 2 since the day Akers went down for the season before it ever began.

I have exaggerated my reasons why they need to add RB's before the last minute cuts.

I've been lambasted and told to cool your jets Florida_Ram, and told to wait a couple more/few weeks as McVay and Snead calmly sort this out.

This repetitive post of mine has gotten mocked several times but I'm not shy to run it back..

Rams RB's with NFL regular season carries...

Xavier Jones - NFL carries 0 (I will admit he flashed vs the Chargers with little space to run behind with the 2nd & 3rd string 0-lineman)

Raymond Calais - NFL carries 0 (More of a special teams RB and shows below avg strength to break tackles.)

Jake Funk - NFL carries 0 (rookie hype train might show more in the next 2 preseason games, but can't hang our hat on him)

Otis Anderson - NFL carries 0 (was never going to be counted on as a 2021 RB by committee - special teams is his forte)

McVay & Snead likely will have a handful of RB's on their radar to add prior to week 1.

I'm just not patient with with this process and I hope they add at least one before the preseason ends.

IF the current group of RB's behind Hendo looks more of the same when we play the Raiders and Broncos, I won't be surprised.

Just my opinion.

I know it doesn't resonate with many of the solid ROD members, but I'm not changing my mind based on weeks 2 and 3 of the preseason.

Know what you want and don't gamble on the last minute before week 1 of the regular season
