Not a fan. The secondary is really bad? Okay. Several others around the NFL are too. Why is this defnese the worst in the league statistically of late with the talent it has in the front 7, and an offense that is about as good as you could ask for in terms of giving the defense breathes? The secondary sure seemed good enough the 1st half of this year, and down the stretch last year, when we were holding teams to less than 15 pts per game (!). Feels to me like a coordinator that has been figured out. Or that has no counter punch or designs to mitigate when teams attack personnel flaws. I'm not saying work miracles with this group. But you can't draw something up to even get us to 25% on 3rd down tonight - often 3rd and long - to get off the field? Would have won us the game.

Verse has seemingly plateaued on his watch. Why?

Edit - it felt like every blitz from the secondary was getting home. Why not try it a bit more, if they're struggling to cover anyone anyway? We jusr saw Chicago run it endlessly with it. Do it until they show they can stop it.

Dude hasn't been given the tools to get the job done. Throw in a couple of good cbs and a good lb and see if that helps.
100% Shula has orchestrated that D with the lowest amount of money in the league and doing it with almost everything depending on the front affecting the game. I'd say he has elevated the D at times.

Everyone in the back end of the defense can be upgraded with the exception of Lake and Curl.

Agree, and once Young started having knee issues, coupled with Lake's absence, the D struggled.

I just checked and Young had 9 sacks in the first 7 games this year. Had 11 sacks in the first 13 games. He has had 1 sack in his last 7 games, including playoffs.

I'm not okay with an entire defense worth of cast offs and replacement players. The defensive line is the only talented level of the defense and honestly they're not stars either. Just good players. Can't blame Shula for that.

Ideally, we use the draft and free agency to recapitalise the Defense.

We’ve neglected LB and CB for a long time. I’m comfortable with Safety depth as a whole unit but we can always improve.

Unfucking ST would go along way as well, but fellas I feel like I’m preaching to the choir

On the one hand, I don't think Shula or anyone else should be ok with how things turned out. The team fell short. Sure, the talent was lacking, and we can't expect Shula to concoct some whacked Fritz Shurmur-esque bullshit scheme to compensate for the lack of talent, but the team fell short. Once coaches start feeling ok with falling short, we're on the way to 7-10 seasons. Also, that silly off-season narrative that the Rams didn't sign a CB because of all the CBs already on the roster seems to have (deservedly) bit them.

On the other hand, this team was Charmin soft versus the run last year. Kudos for fixing that. It's currently a young and cheap unit with lots of room for improvement. With or without Shula, the D is something we can expect the FO and McVay to address this off season.

On the other, other hand, multi=SB winning DC Matt Patricia is available.

D-will was the one getting wrecked out there.
We don't have anyone who can handle Smith without a very quick rush on Darnold. Need a CB1. Plain and simple.

I'd like a safety that can ballhawk from the middle as well. Real pick threat that strikes fear in QBs.

Fans were right on that one. Been right about it for that matter.

Im with you on that one for sure. We all been saying it for 2 years now.

How many people in our back 7 would start for Seattle? Not many. I think he was OK for what he had to work with. Honestly the defense would have been a sieve minus Poona Ford. 17th overall in total degense so right in the middle.

Lots of draft choices to address Defense. The Landman deal may have been too soon. He and Young fell off a cliff production wise in the 2nd half of season. Secondary needs to be rebuilt at the Corner position.
