Some get wrapped up with 40 times thinking it's the real measurable for the skill position players. There is a real difference between someone's true speed and football speed. Most guys aren't going to be running 40 yards at full speed unless it's a break away. There have been many great players who weren't lightning fast. It's how a guy can create separation while running his route which is more important, because not all routes are going to be a "go" route. If you watch his hi-lights, he does create separation, and has the speed to extend plays. He's not going to be just a possession receiver. He will stretch the field when it's needed, and tough enough to catch a pass in traffic too.

It's because of nonsense like this that I began wondering decades ago why the NFL doesn't prefer to have their Combine participants run or otherwise compete in pads. This would provide a much truer NFL speed, acceleration, agility stat figures.

Who is wearing 81? Take it away from them. We need someone to redeem it. The last person I remember wearing it was Marty Gilyard.

That said, who has 86 and 87?

It's 4th and 2 with Budda Baker pressing him. Kupp is lined up outside as the Z WR. Baker, who was just drafted by the Cardinals with Pick #36, ran a 4.45 40. Kupp comes off the LOS with a little stutter, throws an inside shoulder fake, and then releases hard outside. He smacks Baker's hands down when Baker tries to deliver a punch and runs right by him for the 27 yard TD.

A top 40 pick with 4.45 speed tries to press Kupp on 4th and 2, and Kupp makes him look the fool.
Hmm....again...I like Kupp...I question whether Budda is a press corner type...It's Kupp signature stutter step, then swim move. He's been schooled by some pros. But the aggressive, hands ON press coverage of a Sherman/Peterson is what I'm talking about...not the timid attempt by Budda.
On most pro routes, there isn't time for that stutter-step type move...it throws the timing off.

I used to watch the Rams at practice...bunch of stutter-step moves in the 1 on 1 drills by wrs...Yet, no one could get open on game day. We'll see if Kupp's skills translate to game day.

He has the best hands in the draft and is probably one of the smartest players. My comparison is a better version of Willie Snead. I didn't love him because I wanted more explosive deep threats, but he is going to get a ridiculous amount of touches and should vacuum them up.
Here's what nfl safeties think of him

Bruce ran a 4.48. If you ask me he was faster than that on that old Astroturf.

Rice ran a 4.59, but there were reports of him running a 4.45 in college. It was a different era then. Players train for sprinting now, back then players would show up for the combine and didn't know how to run a 40 yard dash.
Yeah Ike might have been a bad example. Still, there are loads of sprinters out there who can't play the game. There are also loads of "slow guys" that simply kill it on the field.

If he's a Z, he'll have the ability to use stutters and creativity. As an X, it's a bit tougher. The big thing with Kupp is that he uses his hands extremely well and his footwork is very advanced for his age (both are very polished skills). He also does a nice job of varying his releases to keep DBs off guard. We all know the kid is quick, but he's also very technically sound.

He'll get it done, my friend. Believe! (y)

One thing McVay has been quoted on a couple times is how they're all going to move around. But yeah at some point they're going to have to settle on a "top 3" who are their best look for a given defense on critical downs, starting the game, etc. I'd guess we'll see something like this:

X: Kupp. I think Kupp's best position is the slot and he's going to have a lot of snaps there I'm sure, but he'll end up playing a lot of X because he's big, has strong hands/physique and route running, it allows Woods and the others to be more effective. Woods will be here a lot too, and hopefully one of those two tall kid wideouts who will be fighting for their lives, but in the end Kupp's route running will play best out there even though it will affect his numbers going up against the best corner on a lot of snaps. That said, IF a guy like Thomas starts to put it together and splits time with Woods at X, that would be real good for Kupp.

Z: Tavon. I don't see Tavon as a good slot guy because he's not strong over the middle, his catch radius sucks, and when you need short yards he might drop it. Z's a great spot for your most explosive option, which Tavon is. He does have speed and at Z can be schemed into a free release and/or run go routes and posts and take the top off. So I think he'll do a lot of time here in this offense provided he works on his routes and sharpens things up.

Y: Woods. Again these guys are going to move around. But Woods will be a real dependable possession option for Goff out of the slot so will probably log the most snaps here even though it'll probably be close. I see Woods as on the field a lot for dependability, in the slot and out wide at X, maybe flip-flopping with Kupp a lot.

This discussion gets crazy when you start talking about non-11 personnel. Like who's the guy getting the lion's share of snaps in 13 personnel lol. Gonna be fun to attend camp this year, I'll tell you that!

Congratulations on the call.
Kupp is the type of player that you can never have enough of.From head to toe he is First and foremost a football player.
I look forward to having WR'S who will Catch the damn ball.I felt we really needed someone to stretch the field as well.
Looks like we now have that guy with Reynolds.Another WR who will catch the damn ball.
Looks like we will no longer be a top team in the drop percentage category.
No more unnecessary ulcers.lol
Enjoyed your mocks this year. Thanks Bro.

I would flip flop Woods and Kupp, but they are interchangeable guys who can play both outside and inside so no huge qualms there.

The most interesting offseason story line for me is Tavon filling the desean Role. Tavon has speed, but hasn't shown deep threat chops to this point in his career. To Mcvays credit he did a good job using DeSean Jackson off the line and in the slot getting him free releases so he could use his deep speed. Hopefully McVay gets alot more out of Tavon using him in similar fashion in addition to his gadget stuff.

The deep stuff has to be what he's thinking of to get Tavon to earn that paycheck. This staff went after guys who have an ability to break tackles and get RAC and that's not Tavon. So the short stuff other than occasional bubble screens they will have better options.

If he can get Tavon to bust a big play down field periodically, and maybe one or two 20+ yard gains per game via screens or short routes, we'll be in business.

Watched a lot of highlight videos of Kupp today. The thing that stands out the most to me is that in every one of those plays that I watched, I could tell his goal was to go for the touchdown. This guy doesn't give up. It felt as if a nice catch wasn't enough for him.

That's the Jerry Rice & Aeneas Williams mentality in that they acted as though the catch (or INT) was just the initial part of the play. Jerry is Jerry. However, whenever Aeneas intercepted passes, even in practice with the Horns, he would ball out in full energy trying to reach pay dirt. One Rams defensive coach used to pull rookies and other young DBs aside and say (paraphrasing), "Study that guy at practice and in games, and try to do the things he does."

I wasn't altogether joking when I said this guy may be a lighter version of Jerry Rice.

Yea me too.

I had JuJu Smith-Schuster ranked 1 and Kupp ranked 2nd, just wish we could have gotten the USC kid instead of Everett at that pick because I think both these WRs will end up being the best two receivers taken in this draft.

I was embarrassed to see how good he looked...He's about 15 months older than I am...I look about 15 years older than him...

Is Kupp's age a concern? Will his age limit his ability to grow and raise his skill level?

?

He's 23, pretty much in the middle of our other WR's. Austin is the oldest at 26 and i'm worried he still doesn't understand the route tree.

Lets see if he can get open in the pros....on 3rd and 8's......vs press man. I still don't see anything more than a slot receiver....

Watch how he played against Marcus Peters.

Tape don't lie and he balled out against a guy who came in and made an immediate impact as a rookie.
