Just got back from 2 weeks in the Keys. The dolphin fishing is on fire. We caught so much dolphin that we had to consider the amount of time it would take to clean them if we caught more... that's when we'd stop catching. Here's some pics...

Hog. I've caught lots of bass with a crappy jig just like that. Not quite as big as that one though. I think my biggest was around 5 pounds. My son caught this bass last night... almost 11 pounds.
He nabbed it while he was fishing for specks (crappy) and this beast totally caught him off guard. He was fishing with an ultra-light spinning reel set-up from his kayak. You'll see the tiny lure he was catching the specks on in the bass's mouth. He had a blast fighting this thing in. We don't keep bass, so that sucker was set free after the pics.

My favorite steelhead set up is a light weight spinning rod with spiderwire and 6lb leader. Total blast catching a 7-12lb steelhead on a spinner or egg cluster with that little thing. Gets a little hairy when they head for a snag or get in the river current. Just gotta play 'em out. I have bigger setups but that one is WAY more fun. You can't horse them at all.Yeah. They catch bass all the time while targeting the crappy. Never the lunkers though. This guy must've been extra hungry.
The best part was he caught the thing on an ultra-light spinning reel set-up. Now it's a very expensive set-up... but it's ULTRA-LIGHT. Plus he was in a kayak. The fight was a blast for him.
In reality... he was probably able to catch that fish BECAUSE of the ultra-light set-up and the kayak. Big fish are much harder to fool. They hear/notice a motor boat right away... not so much with a kayak. And that little jig on ultra-light line definitely had to look pretty real to the fish.

Very nice!
But a Colts hoodie? Come on, how proud are you reeeeally?

Yeah... he's that son. The one that I made sleep outside unless the temp was going to be 32° or less... which almost never happens here. LOL
Both of his brothers are diehard Rams... but he decided to be a rebel. Just know for certain that I didn't buy that damn hoodie. He is a diehard fan though.
If he didn't have a twin brother, I'm sure that he never would've gone over to the Dark Side. It's a funny thing that I've watched as the twins grew. Many identical twins try hard to be different from their twin... they don't want to share an identity and a face. People think that twins want to be just like each other because you see young twins dressed alike by their parents. Ha... they actually hate that. They really do want to be their own person... and it's amazing how different they are even though they share the same DNA.
It's supposed to get down into the high 30's on Sunday here... so he may feel just like his Colts who are playing up in Buffalo Saturday. It's gonna be COLD.
Surf casting is common around here and I always laugh at rhe guys who can't get their line out past the breakers. Hardly ever saw anyone catch anything.
Right after labor day there was a guy who hooked his line to a drone, flew it out about 100 yards, dropped it and reeled in. He was hauling in fish about 1 out of 5 times.
Assholes who laugh at other people over stupid shit deserve twice as much when they do stupid shit (this is me most of the time). There's a fatass guy who owns an aquarium store that I've been going to since I was in HS down here. He's a total shit talker... it's hard to believe sometimes... especially if you have never been in his place before. He tells people he doesn't like that that everything they want to buy isn't for sale. He likes me cause I give him more shit than he can dish out. Keep in mind... this shit talking goes on very loudly from the moment I walk in until I leave.
Anyway... this guy lives on New Smyrna Beach and all he does is surf cast fishing. He has surf casting rods custom made that are like 13-15 ft long. They're that long so he can cast out super far like you're talking about. He is an expert at catching pompano... and that is a damn fine eating fish. He and his buddies know where to fish on the beach depending on the time of year because they're out there every fucking morning. He doesn't open his business till 1pm because of that lol. When he and his buddies see other guys come out there and try to surf fish without the proper equipment... they lay into these guys like schoolyard bullies. He is a real sob.
So this was great. I told him that I was going to be out at the beach one weekend with our boat. He was very excited to show me something he just had built into the bed of his truck for his surf fishing. I told him I'd come by on Sunday morning and check it out. I went over to his place that morning before he went out to the beach. He had a rack for his rods installed in the bed of his truck right behind his cab. It went all the way across the bed as he takes like 8 or 9 rods out there with him at a time. It looked badass when he put all his rods in it... kinda like he had 9 super high antennas sticking straight up behind his cab. This was the very 1st time he used it. I was impressed with it and I could see that that made him even happier about it. He told me that he needed to drive over to the mainland and get some tackle, so I actually followed him in my vehicle because I was heading that way too.
I was right behind him as he drove over the bridge and onto the mainland when he went under an overpass. His fucking 15 foot rods all got snapped off at about the two thirds mark. I watched it happen. It was almost like it happened in slow motion for me. You should have seen his face when he pulled over and looked at his beautiful custom stuff all fucked to hell. I'm sorry.... I was laughing so hard that I literally fell out of my truck when I pulled over and opened my door. This rude sob was never gonna hear the end of this from me. This is the kind of thing that he makes fun of when people do something stupid with their aquariums all day. I couldn't stop laughing even though I knew how pissed he was about all of this. It was amazing.... and he still hears about it from me from time to time.
He replaced everything (he's loaded) and he had the rod rack reinstalled at an angle so his super long surf rods stick out towards the tailgate and don't come close to any low hanging overpasses or limbs. LOL. It's way cooler looking now... but I'll always remind him of how stupid he was initially. He fucking deserves it. Hahahahahahaaaaa
