Surf casting is common around here and I always laugh at rhe guys who can't get their line out past the breakers. Hardly ever saw anyone catch anything.
Right after labor day there was a guy who hooked his line to a drone, flew it out about 100 yards, dropped it and reeled in. He was hauling in fish about 1 out of 5 times.
There's a fatass guy who owns an aquarium store that I've been going to since I was in HS down here. He's a total shit talker... it's hard to believe sometimes... especially if you have never been in his place before. He tells people he doesn't like that that everything they want to buy isn't for sale. He likes me cause I give him more shit than he can dish out. Keep in mind... this shit talking goes on very loudly from the moment I walk in until I leave.
Anyway... this guy lives on New Smyrna Beach and all he does is surf cast fishing. He has surf casting rods custom made that are like 13-15 ft long. They're that long so he can cast out super far like you're talking about. He is an expert at catching pompano... and that is a damn fine eating fish. He and his buddies know where to fish on the beach depending on the time of year because they're out there every fucking morning. He doesn't open his business till 1pm because of that lol. When he and his buddies see other guys come out there and try to surf fish without the proper equipment... they lay into these guys like schoolyard bullies. He is a real sob.
So this was great. I told him that I was going to be out at the beach one weekend with our boat. He was very excited to show me something he just had built into the bed of his truck for his surf fishing. I told him I'd come by on Sunday morning and check it out. I went over to his place that morning before he went out to the beach. He had a rack for his rods installed in the bed of his truck right behind his cab. It went all the way across the bed as he takes like 8 or 9 rods out there with him at a time. It looked badass when he put all his rods in it... kinda like he had 9 super high antennas sticking straight up behind his cab. This was the very 1st time he used it. I was impressed with it and I could see that that made him even happier about it. He told me that he needed to drive over to the mainland and get some tackle, so I actually followed him in my vehicle because I was heading that way too.
I was right behind him as he drove over the bridge and onto the mainland when he went under an overpass. His fucking 15 foot rods all got snapped off at about the two thirds mark. I watched it happen. It was almost like it happened in slow motion for me. You should have seen his face when he pulled over and looked at his beautiful custom stuff all fucked to hell. I'm sorry.... I was laughing so hard that I literally fell out of my truck when I pulled over and opened my door. This rude sob was never gonna hear the end of this from me. This is the kind of thing that he makes fun of when people do something stupid with their aquariums all day. I couldn't stop laughing even though I knew how pissed he was about all of this. It was amazing.... and he still hears about it from me from time to time.
He replaced everything (he's loaded) and he had the rod rack reinstalled at an angle so his super long surf rods stick out towards the tailgate and don't come close to any low hanging overpasses or limbs. LOL. It's way cooler looking now... but I'll always remind him of how stupid he was initially. He fucking deserves it. Hahahahahahaaaaa
