MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! We have purchased our retirement home in North Port Florida! I was getting worried because of the absolute insanity of the buying market right now. We lost out on 3 other homes that we had what seemed like extremely solid bids, all at least 30k over asking price. Luckily we didn't get any of those, because the one we got checked off a lot more boxes. One of the biggest being outdoor space and privacy. The lots on each side, behind, and in front are all empty. Here she is.....

Not bad. Except for that green deck. Wow. The backside is a nature preserve? Or just a lot that hasn't been sold? If it's a lot that hasn't been sold, try to buy it if you can. I didn't do it when I bought my house and have regretted it since they built a house back there.

Yeah, we will see if we can live with the green and blue Lanai. Worst case will be a lil paint :). We're going to look into the cost of the lots around us. We have empty lots behind, to both sides, and directly in front.

Congrats brother!

Been a bit quiet because these plans can change on a dimes notice for some.

Both the M-wife and I have certainly been thinking of both you and the L-wife. Sorry we are going to miss games with you. Maybe you can make it out once in a while and we can meet up.

I retire in less than four years and we just back yesterday spending six days in Florida investigating our plan B. Think we will pull the trigger if the right home comes up.

Really happy for you and the Mrs G-man.

Both the L-wife and myself wish you a long, healthy and happy retirement. And as always........

GO RAMS!!!

I have shares in AMC, so will be retiring a multimillionaire soon. You all should check it out if you haven't yet.

I’m 50. I have 4 more years for my pension to max out. Playing a little catch up on the 401k since I’ve take out loans over the years for stuff.

I just started thinking about retirement the last few years. It’s great to hear your takes.

Had a coworker die at 54 this year so it’s making me consider if I should retire early or keep grinding for another 10-15 years.

It's such a cliche.. "Life's too short" But in all seriousness it's one of the truest statements ever made. Being a Cancer survivor and having heart disease makes you re-prioritize things like retirement. My advice to anyone is make sure you have a good financial advisor and use their expertise.

My kids just got their first jobs. A neighbor who does investment crap was talking to them yesterday about Roth IRA and that kind of stuff

He pulls out a financial calculator. If you put 6,000 per year into a Roth IRA every year for 20 years, you have invested $120,000.00. If you average a 6 percent return per year with compounding interest at the end of 20 years your $120,000 is now $2.7 million.

Mind boggling.

Actually more like $253,000. $2.7 million would take 57 years. Now, I'm not saying don't do it. But if you have an IRA and 401k at work, adds up fast. And oh yeah, if you are only getting 6%, you are in the wrong fund. One of mine is currently getting 12.4%. BTW, the stock market average is 10% over any 10 year time period. Any 10 year time period. Even the great depression. So if you are not getting at least 10% something is wrong. Also at 10% 6,000 and $6,000 a year will hit $2 million around years 42-43.

Try it for yourself.

A month ago I had a very productive zoom call with my financial advisor. I'm 57 and would like to retire at 59.5, 33 years with the company. We hashed out the game plan and she said we were in great shape to do it, so we were looking at June of '23 for a retirement date. We had a second meeting yesterday and the first thing I mentioned was that I wanted to actually up the amount I would bring home on a monthly basis. She said the plan still worked well. So just for shits and giggles I asked If the plan looks that good can I retire earlier? She crunched the numbers and said.... You can go now if you want.
:omg:
So I've set a date for June 1st of this year! We are so excited it's not even funny. It's absolutely amazing to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our plan is to move to Florida, probably the Port Charlotte area, from California. The house search will start June 5th!

There is one MAJOR bummer about going now. I will probably not get to see a live game in the new stadium, which I have season tix for. Frikken COVID!!!!
If I can ask being late to the party here, anything you would have done different to make your current situation better? Also, why Florida?

I just turned 60.

When I dreamed of being an airline pilot the required retirement age was 60. That changed to 65 in 2007.

I think retirement is largely on if you like your job enough or not.

There are very difficult challenges to my job as I get older. But it is worth trying for 65.

GO RAMS!!!

Differently as far as when/why I retired now? Florida for a few reasons.

1. We love warm weather and warm ocean water. I grew up in sunny SoCal and the warmest the ocean gets here is around 74. Which especially now at my age is too frikken cold. I will have at least 6 months a year of 80+ degree water in Florida

2. Cost of living. No Florida state income tax. Our new home we bought for $340k, same home in Cali would probably be easily 1 million and there would be no way in HELL we would have as big a lot size nor the privacy.

3. NO MORE LOS ANGELES TRAFFIC!!!!!! 57 years of it has been enough....

4. Getting away from the political lunacy of California and moving to a state that fit's us better politically.

Great point J! For me I loved my job itself and my co-workers. I did NOT like the company that bought us 4 years ago though. They have made the job miserable with the ridiculous changes they have made. Like you mention, it is a helluva a lot harder to deal with stupidity and crazy nonsensical changes as you get older.

I brought this up to my financial guy yesterday as I am thinking about taking the leap into retirement next Feb. And he showed me a 15 yr span that the S&P just about broke even. I like to know what details you have so I can share with my guy.

I was thinking the same reasons, I just wanted to confirm. I am thinking of moving there myself in the next year or so for much of the same reasons however not from Cali.

Just received my California DMV registration yesterday. Due 12/31/21. Cost for renewal of my 13 yr old F150? $311.00. Florida truck registration cost? $32. Can't help but feel a great sense of satisfaction. The truck will be in Florida by Thanksgiving. We FINALLY are making the actual move Nov. 30th. Movers are picking up all our stuff on the 29th. It's been a looooong 5 months waiting and are so ready to go!

Are you sure that Florida registration is as good as the California one?

You might want to make sure that Florida car registration isn't missing something important to cost so much less.
