I am wondering if Hoecht could be traded. He counts $2.3M against the cap and a cut or trade results in no dead cap space. If Jackson is really showing up in camp and the DL has enough depth, I could see them moving him. A rookie replacement who makes $800K results in $1.5M in cap savings. That can be pushed to next yr.
Atwell is another that I can see them moving if they are sold on Smith and Whittington stepping up, along with Tyler Johnson. They lose speed, not sure how fast Smith is, but we all know it's the last yr of Atwell's contract, so he likley won't be back anyway. Getting a late pick or a flip of picks, couldn't hurt. They only have 7 picks next year.
My feeling is that trading Hoecht or Atwell could be a monumental mistake. Especially Hoecht. I've got a strong feeling that this team can compete for a Super Bowl this year. If they do, it's a long season; depth will be needed.
Having a strong rotation and being able to keep guys fresh is huge. Also, if Young or Verse go down, we'll want a vet like Hoecht to start. What if 2 OLBs were injured for a time? I just don't see a late pick or pick swap and $1.5 mil. in savings being worth losing vital depth when the team is a SB contender.
On Atwell, we wouldn't get anything valuable for him. In fact, it's possible a comp pick, once he signs elsewhere, could end up being more valuable than whatever we get in trade now. No one else brings the speed component that he does, he's good depth, and he may provide great value as a KR this year given the new rules.
