The steelers must run to the phone when Snead calls.

Judging from some of their comments it sounds like he mighta been their version of Bobby Evans. I hope he isn't that bad. Depth is very important in this league. They found out the hard way last year. Is he better than Bruss?

.

Bruss cannot be on the field this season. Stafford will be killed. He definitely needs more seasoning before he can be trusted.

At this point, he could even be part of the long-term plans. Doesn't seem that the Rams would give up the draft capital for a one-year rental.

Someone is going to be on the outside. Are the Rams giving up on Bruss?

JM: You’ve played both tackle and guard. What position do you think you’ll play at the next level?

KD: I’ll play on the interior of the offensive line. That seems to be the feedback I’m getting. I played right guard mostly. I played a little right tackle during my red-shirt freshmen year but the majority of my experience has been at right guard.

JM: Is there a scheme that you prefer to play in at the next level?

KD: Not really. I feel like I’m very versatile. I like the power schemes. I love being able to block down on people. This year, we pretty much ran inside and outside zone exclusively. I like doing that a lot. I just don’t wanna be pigeonholed at the end of the day. I don’t want people to look at me and say oh, he’s a strong guy, we have to put him in a power scheme. We ran inside zone most of the time. I just don’t wanna be pigeonholed.

JM: What’s your favorite way to demoralize your opponent?

KD: When he knows what’s coming but can’t do anything to stop it, that’s the best feeling. That can really kill his entire mood for the rest of the game. If I know for a fact that this guy can’t beat me, I’ll tell him what the next play is. If I tell him what’s coming and he still can’t do anything about it, that’s the type of stuff that breaks your will. We’ve had games like that before. In a game that we won by a large margin, I’ve been able to tell the defensive linemen in front of me that I know you can’t stop it. We’re about to run inside zone to the right. It still goes for 20 yards a pop. That’s something that can really kill them.

He really does add size to the Oline... I wonder if the guys we've had as backups last few years were too outside zone guys and therefore we need a guy with more size to run some of the gap stuff we'll need this year.

One thing re: Dotson is he's got power. This looks to me like they wanted someone added to the mix who can pair with Big Rob to give them that dominant strong side run they wanted with Bruss.

I'm glad to have him and hope the new environment maybe helps things click. He has enough talent to help us on that depth chart.

Here's Merril Hoge on him after his rook season:

TIER 5: BETTER PASS PRO THAN RUN BLOCKERS

  1. ANDREW NORWELL, WASHINGTON Commodes

  2. ISAAC SEUMALO, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

  3. KEVIN DOTSON, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

  4. JUSTIN PUGH, ARIZONA CARDINALS

  5. DALTON RISNER, DENVER BRONCOS

Just as there are road graders who can’t quite match their physical run-game dominance with pass-blocking production, there is the yin to that yang with players who are pass-protectors first and don’t (or haven’t yet) offer as much in run-blocking.

Andrew Norwell has been that style of player for a number of years now, never recording a PFF pass-blocking grade under 70.0 across his eight-year career but coming in under that mark for run-blocking in five straight seasons.

Kevin Dotson’s time in Pittsburgh amounts to almost 1,000 snaps of action now across two seasons, and his pass protection has been elite over that time (aided by Ben Roethlisberger’s league-fastest average time to throw). Conversely, he has PFF run-blocking grades of 55.1 and then 60.8 on his resume.

After such a bad season last year it looks like the Rams learned their lesson and are shoring up the depth of the Oline.
Not that bad of an analysis, Purple One!

Obviously I had him wrong. Could have sworn he was a powerful drive blocker when he came out.

This could end up being a good addition for us. I am hopeful.

Sucks that we may still be trying to reconfigure our o-line with the season opener right around the corner. Obviously the Rams felt an interior depth upgrade with better upside was needed. Guess its better to try to do something now though.
Logan Bruss brought this on. If he was in any was capable, I doubt this move happens. I also trust him WAAAAY more than Noteboom at RG.
Even with the penalties, he is more quality beef on the Oline. His presence makes Stafford safer, in my book.

Apparently this guy was about to get cut. Guess we couldn't wait for that but a bad trade if so as far as compensation goes, but fuck it. Hope this trade works and welcome Dotson!
