He's a tough call for me. I like having a strong RG and it is starting to show in that run game potency. But his history makes me leery of putting too much investment in him. I think a good approach is offer him median starter money for 3 years and if he signs great.

Guys like him might best serve the team in giving them comp picks after some dumb team throws big FA money at him.
If he’s offered a ridiculous amount then sure, however Oline is finally looking pretty good which it hasn’t for a few years and draft picks are not a guarantee to fill them, like Bruss or Evans.

Now if they planned on drafting an OLT and moving Jackson to ORG then maybe don’t sign him but how would they know how the draft was going to fall in March?

I’m not at all convinced that Jackson would be a better RG than Dotson, in any case.

Problem is that the Rams may not be in-line for any compensatory picks in 2025.

For the first time in several years, the Rams figure to be active in free agency in 2024. If their additions (signings) exceed their free agents lost (not just in quantity of players but size of contracts), then the Rams would likely not get any comp picks.

I'd prefer to draft our future LT and move Jackson to RT.

I’d agree with you, but:

a) we’re not going to be picking early enough to get one of the stud LT prospects in April

b) Rob has still got another year on his contract and may well earn himself a new one.

This is something for all of us to get our heads wrapped around. The maths don't math no more on comp picks for next two years at least. That will change our strategy in the draft, resigning our guys, and signing new guys in FA.

It's a new day.

The good news is that the list of pending Rams' unrestricted free agents is not that impressive:

At the top are Dotson, Witherspoon and Maher. After that, it ain't much. Assuming they won't re-sign Fuller.

I like all four of those guys but Kevin Dotson is the one I would hate to see them lose. This year's version of Greg Gaines

Yeah, would be nice to sign him to a reasonable contract. We'll see. But I think there's a world where Jackson ends up on the right side next year with a high end LT pick too.

A) Possible, my guy Alt will likely be gone, but Georgia's Mims or Alabama's Latham could easily be available in that 16-20 range.

B) Again, very possible, although should McClendon, Bruss and/or Arcuri continue to develop well, and with Jackson leading, our depth could actually make the older Havenstein obsolete. Hav could also become our leading trade chip as we don't have much else.

I'm hoping the Rams first round pick (and I want them to keep it) is the best available player are one of several positions ... Left Tackle, Cornerback, Edge, Wide Receiver, interior D-Line.

I agree with most on the Rams' greater needs but the 2nd best DL could be better value than the 4th or 5th best option at LT, CB and Edge. Wild-card option could be if the Rams are in a position to move-up for a QB.

I imagine they won't be tied to one position. They'll prob be picking mid round in the 1st which is where most 1st round grades end so imagine they'll stay put and grab someone unless they trade up.

I think a reasonably likely scenario is one where we sign Dotson and the line looks almost exactly like it does now with no pressure to draft Oline early unless they want to.

Dotson is going to be motivated this coming week, more than usual! Looking forward to him unlocking that extra level.

I think we need to cool our jets on resigning Dotson. Let's see how the season plays out and then talk. Although I agree that he has looked very good and I hope that he continues to play well. The Rams needed an O-line upgrade and Dotson has delivered.

Good article on Dotson if you feel like reading it.

Talks about we are using him currently to his strengths and he was put on the bench due to 2 OG FA signings.

I say resign him this week. Dude has been an absolute steal. This next draft can be the difference between a good line and a great one. Our guards are set. I’d keep Hav. I’m fine with Jackson, but would understand an upgrade. Would absolutely love an upgrade at Center.

Love Dotson at RG so far. However, being that Jackson has had some rough games this year I'd prefer to get a real stud LT and hopefully we have a good solid RT developing with one of the younger players. Jackson would provide some nice depth if we got a super LT. I liked AJ there far more than Noteboom but don't know that he's "it" yet.

Dotson's been fantastic and they would be wise to re-sign him.
They've got Havenstein under contract until the end of 24.. if you're bringing in someone young.. why not start them out with a real support system on your side? Also.. you'll be paying a rookie contract on that RT... so you can afford to pay your RG.

I know Jackson can be upgraded.. but, really.. he's been absolutely serviceable.. and, most importantly, solid in pass protection.
