Just because it isn't what you would do, doesn't make it wrong.
I think as long as we have Donald here we'll have a limitless supply of under-utilized pass rushers wanting one year contracts to remove their careers. We might as well take advantage of it.
The Pats haven’t traded away first round picks like the Rams have and they were not as top heavy in contracts like the Rams have been since the contracts given to Cooks, Gurley, Donald and Goff.
These are the kind of moves a competent GM makes to keep the franchise from gathering albatrosses. CL is a pretty good WSLB; but not worth $16mil to the Rams. Ditto Fowler, a good OLB, but we have youth at OLB (Obo for one). I'm thankful for both players -- I'll miss aspects of them both (especially CL's blocked punts!) -- but, just watch the GA highlight vid I linked & you'll see all that Floyd can do for us: he can (and has) played, at a high level, ILB, OLB, and rush DE (I saw some 4-3 alignments). He plugs an immediate need for us. His long arms kept OL's from getting their mitts on him. Run defense is, and has been for a long time, a serious liability for us.
Littleton hasn't blocked a punt since Blythe went running his mouth about why it was so successful. That was... 2018, I think. Maybe 2017, but I doubt it.
They traded one for Brandin Cooks and have been stripped of two for cheating.
And they got a first round pick back for Cooks from us and we are not. They are not as top heavy in salary like the Rams are now. I didn’t say it couldn’t work, I said I don't know if we can make it work.
To be fair, I didn't mean to suggest McSnead was Bellicheat. Re-read the quote I referenced. It spoke about not having many high-priced first round picks, some cast-offs who had previously disappointed, and a bunch of mid-round picks to fill the gaps. I shared the Pats have proven that approach can work.
I didn't say it would or could work for the Rams, nor did I state anything about the Pats being less top heavy. Those are your words.
I will say you confused me with the Ramsey comment. Bill invested heavily in Gilmore and if you've watched them play, you know that he is vital in most of the schemes they run, which change week-to-week as much as any defense in the league. There's a reason why Bill paid Gilmore.
I assume you were referencing the capital it cost to attain Ramsey and that's fair. Regardless, the impact a top-flight corner can have on a teams scheme can't be understated, imo.
This is certainly true and a great point. And to be honest, they are not as top heavy in contracts compared to almost any successful NFL team. It helps Brady had always left money on the table for them. But more than anything, it has been masterful scheming in combination with the ability to let players go at the right time by Bill. I hate the Pats/Bill/Kraft with a passion, but I won't argue against the level of competence that man has demonstrated over time. He knows the scheme, manages to put mediocre players in specific roles, and the sum is always greater than the parts. Just take a look at the offensive lines year in and out. Always managed to keep Brady upright and provide holes for backs. Yet, on talent alone, most teams would not feel comfortable at the start of the season with the respective groupings. It's pretty remarkable.

My point is Snead and McVay aren't a half of where Bellicheat is in regards to personal. So too say it worked for the Patriots is superficial.

Gilmore signed an avg of 13 million a year avg. deal with the Pats that was back loaded. Hardly a resetting of the bar for CB's compared the highway robbery Ramsey is about to commit with us.
Yes Bill paid Gilmore because he fit the scheme, which anybody with sense does, but he doesn't break the bank with multiple people on the team being paid outrageous money. Look at these players on our team that get paid top 5 money at their position (AD 25 mill, 14.3 mill Gurley, Goff 36 Mill, Johnny Hekker 3.75, Ramsey ?)

No doubt this is Staley's choice to replace Fowler or Littleton. Though IMO he's a big downgrade as a pass rusher. He certainly won't scare anyone. IMO Ebukam is a better edge rusher than Floyd. He might be their answer to upgrading Littleton's position and IMO he would be an upgrade at MIKE. With his size and speed he would be a matchup with TE's as a 3 down MIKE if he has coverage skills. Something they lacked in Littleton and IMO the reason he was allowed to walk. Floyd was strong against the run when playing inside at Georgia.
If he's moved to OLB then he has the speed to play opposite Ebukam. Ebukam is faster but Floyd has a more explosive first step. He's got the size and speed to be a 3 down player either inside or outside. Regardless he's an interesting signing.

My only qualm would be A would have preferred a front loaded bonus and multi year deal with very little dead cap money past year one. Ok this would mean no compensatory pick, but I believe Floyd is going to be awesome playing inside in our base and on 3rd and short situations.
I know people are down on Mathews but perhaps we should praise him for playing through a seriously painful injury. He looked great before that, so good, I thought he was heading to another pro bowl

I kind of wonder if Staley uses him inside also. He’s talked about versatility and being able to move the LB around.
The problem with this move is the Rams have a lot of guys like Floyd (edge who are better vs the run than pass). It's certainly not a bad signing in and of itself but I do find myself wondering whether we would have been better off putting that $10M to work elsewhere. That's the question to my mind at least... Definite solid type signing but was it wise.

We're still going with Ebukam and Okoronkwo, given that Matthews has been cut. I can also see us going with Polite and Holland as well. And Howard will get his snaps; in fact, I'm going to call him the breakout star of 2020/2021.
