I think we're forgetting that Noteboom looked like hell at guard.
I think they restructured him to use as a backup if Alaric Jackson doesn't work out or gets injured.
I think a better set up on the left side might be Noteboom at left tackle and Alaric Jackson at left guard.

I'm still thinking that both the left Guard and the right Guard need to earn their job in Camp.

We have to put the best five on the field so to speak.

I agree. It's rather ugly isn't it.
Boom at LG is yes, I'm much less worried about him at LT. I honestly think they go into 24 with those two as the top options at LT and draft a guard and center. Maybe a late OT or an udfa. Then in '24 part of all that cap we cleared will be sent all in on Andrew Thomas.

Sorry but Boom at LG and Jackson at LT to me is terrible we've seen Boom not be good at LG we've seen those two better at swapped positions.
Rams current OL depth chart. Colors I typically use are elite plus-starter starter depth shitter.

LT: Jackson
LG: Boom
C: Allen
RG: Bruss
RT: Havenstein

iOL depth: Shelton, Anchrum
OT depth: Arcuri

Pending FAs: Edwards, Brewer, Nsekhe, Aboushi, Skura

As it stands right now the OL is at 8 and given the shit we went through last year the Rams may opt to keep 10. There is room for them to add a handful more for competition for camp, maybe more if they really want to cook that group.

Some of the guys I have labeled as depth might be starters, most likely candidates being all the projected starters not named Hav. Edwards is almost certainly gone for purposes of him getting concussions, but for myself him playing like he had given up even when he was healthy left a bad taste in my mouth.

Of the pending FAs I will admit Aboushi might warrant a shot in next year's camp. But Nsehke is too old, Skura is too weak, and Brewer I cut bait on mentally when he opted out during the corona BS. He's not a fighter. We need fighters up front. Guys who are going to dig in.

Now you can quibble with my rankings but I am being careful and honest here, which is what the Rams should be doing in-house. It's possible they get a flush with all four projected starters in orange moving to starter levels of production. But you have two problems going on here, those being level of talent plus the fact they can't stay healthy.

So the way I see it and starting at LT we don't have the high pick you want to plan to address LT. One they like could fall in their laps in round 2 and if so you take him. But generally speaking that's not gonna happen, we'll be looking at RT type OTs with iffy feet. This means best use of our options is to have Boom & Jackson duke it out in camp at LT and the loser is our swing OT.

I have Boom at LG because that's the projected and obvious move the Rams will make to try to recoup some value with him. But he's a shitty guard. His weakness gets exposed there vs the 3T draws he'll see on opposing lines. So from my perspective a LG option that is better than what we currently have is required. Just to be safe. Now the Rams can address that a couple ways, those being a FA signing and the draft. And neither need to be highly sought types either. The FA can be a bargain type just to ensure we have a solid option when Boom limps off the field hurt. The draft pick can be a midrounder of which we have the resources to make that happen.

Center depresses me a bit because signing Shelton makes me think we are acknowledging that we won't be able to upgrade it in the draft. That's how I read it at least. Though if you talk to McVay I am sure he'll tell you Shelton is in the mix at LG. Which is rather stupid IMO but I suppose worst case he could slide to LG or RG if either side disappoints, problem is he won't really change anything by sliding over.

So for the remainder of the FA season my expectation remains that the Rams will sign a LG. Chances are it will be a bargain type signing. But it is going to be required IMO if they want to ensure this unit has enough horses going into the draft. Then in the draft I view one more iOL as a requirement to ensure they have good options for when Boom gets injured or whatever other catastrophe strikes our collection of subpar pieces.

If they stand pat then I will admit we are up shit creek. But I doubt that happens. We'll see.
After listening to McVay he talked about OG Tremayne Anchrum a lot & very little about RG Logan Bruss. I would project that Chicogo last year 5th rd pick Zac Thomas LG/LT who got a full season of practice with the Bears & after signing with the Rams in November might be far ahead of Bruss. Logan Bruss when on the shelf after he blew out his knee in the first quarter of the 2nd preseason game. From all accounts of our ROD TC voyeurs, Bruss was NOT ready for the NFL . He needs to build power in his lower body he was very weak at the time of the injury.

Zac Thomas was a good LT in college who must be an LG in the pro's he needs to add lower-end strength if he is to compete just like Bruss. Anchrum is fully mature & fully ready to start in the NFL all he needs to do is stay healthy, something he has not done in over 2 yrs.

If healthy either Anchrum or Thomas will fight for the starter & backup LG post unless the Rams sign Ty Nsekhe which will change this left side dramatically. I sure hope they sign Ty Nsekhe!

I do not want to see Noteboom anywhere close to being considered an LG starter.:scream:

To finish our conversation late last night........

The best fix I can come up with on the LT post to beef & power it up from what it was early last season is to go with Alaric Jackson in OTA's & training Camp as #1. AJ should be the strongest & healthiest of the two Jackson/Noteboom.

Takes the pressure off on Noteboom after that bad injury he had in the 6th gm. Let him work with team #2. I want Noteboom back to where he was when Whitworth went down in week #17 in 2021. His performance subbing for Whitworth @ LT ....from that point was at an all-pro level performance until he was injured again late in that final NFC Championship game. If you rewatch what he was able to do during that time I can see why the Rams Org took a chance on him in spite of his very bad injury history.

Bottom Line I believe Noteboom deserves a chance to easily get himself back into playing shape over time with no rush if Jackson (or TY Nsekhe if resigned which is my strong hope) can do the heavy lifting @ LT. If there's an injury to Jackson then it's Noteboom's opportunity to come in & then show us what he has been able to do since his disaster in 2022.

If the Rams were to sign UFA veteran Ty Nsekhe he could take AJ's position in my above post & then OL Coach Wendell can insert Jackson in as starting LG & the left side is fixed as well as it can be ....being with the cap situation.

Edwards was playing well in the past, but he played next to Whitworth. Having a great player on the line can elevate the players next to him. This year he fell off a cliff. The concussions were a big part of that but even when healthy he didn't look good. Remember McVay said there was poor communication between Carberry and the line. Plus Jourdan commented that the Rams underestimated the value of Whitworth's leadership and coaching of the entire group.

I agree that ideally Shelton is a very good depth option. He's a subpar starter, who is one dimensional.

Edwards was bad this year. Now that he's had a few concussions he becomes unreliable.

Ah, the old if you aren't an expert then you can't have an opinion argument. We might as well delete RoD then because I don't think any Rams coaches post here.

Seriously though, going into a year with two players whose career was mostly spent on IR is a big mistake. It bit them in the ass last year. Do they repeat the same mistake again? I'm no expert but I didn't like the makeup of the line before the season. I said it on hear. The Oline was even a weakness the season before.

Despite is the key word. The Rams won despite not having a very good Oline. its possible to win a Super Bowl without having All-Pros on every unit. The Rams were weak at MLB in 21' too. They had one legitimate receiving threat in the Super Bowl and still won it.

Whitworth was huge for the Rams. Last season proves why Left Tackle is one of the most valued positions in football and why the good ones go early in the draft. Nobody was banging down Noteboom's door to hand him top OLT money. Ditto for Allen at Center. Edwards had the concussions but you could see that when he was healthy he didn't play as well without Whitworth. As much as I'd like the Rams to prioritize the Oline, its not McVay's priority. Plus they have other areas of need each year. Largely though, ignoring the red flags on the Oline got them to the 2022 disaster.

Don't disagree with much except the "not having a good line" part for winning the Super Bowl. It was one of the best pass protecting offensive lines in the NFL, so I struggle with the concept that they weren't very good overall.

You can't guarantee who will or won't be there at pick 36 - I think if there is an EDGE and a T they like equally, the T will be the pick.

Great signing here because if Bruss can win a spot, this allows both Noteboom/Jackson to remain at LT which given their injury histories, makes sense

Is it a little sad that this thread has reached 5 pages in less than 24 hours, and the topic is re-signing Coleman Shelton?

I'm glad he's back (subject to the contract terms) but it's a bad reflection on the state-of-the-Rams.

Now, it could be worse. There's no thread ... YET ... on Matt Orzech signing with the Packers

Jackson is adequate but hardly inspired a ton of confidence. I do however find it ironic a bit that people don't trust Boom because of injuries but the one year Jackson was counted on he had an injury that goes beyond the field and kept him out of the game. I don't know that we can count on either of them really neither one gets a health pass.

I’m not sure who you read on stats. According to PFF the 2021 overall rating was 7th but the report said that toward the end of the season it dropped off. Whitworth and Havenstein were the anchors but the guards rated below 70. Allen was a solid 81.

so maybe I exaggerated it being bad, but I barely sawa good run game in all of 2021.

If finesse pass blocking is what McVay is going for then I guess he got what he wanted. Oddly enough his offense is based off of a good running game and a cordi g to Jourdan fixing the run game has been his off-season focus both, last offseason and this one.

I don't see an OT at 36....I think they are high on Jackson. I am betting edge, CB, or trade back. If they trade back, then it gives them more flexibility since it would land them another top 100 pick. So in that case maybe more of an opportunity for BPA.

I agree with what you're saying. Boom's best spot is probably LT. But he has clear weaknesses there, particularly vs matchups vs key players in division, because he struggles vs power. Also I keep hearing rumors the Rams are considering moving him to LG and given the restructure I think it is likely they do something like that to try to recoup value in what they are paying him.

Also I think they are going to give Jackson a run at LT. Not sure how all this is going to turn out, and I am rather pessimistic about either way they might try it. But I don't see LT as something we have the resources to fix this offseason.

So you can flip Boom & Jackson at LT and LG but we're still sitting there with subpar options and I think there is a need to add a guard. The dude from the Eagles would be quite a pickup if the Rams can get that done. I know it's unlikely and might require something like River's expectation of trading Higs and maybe more moves, but ensuring the interior is good would be very wise for this offseason.

Dillard? Already signed in Tennessee.

TBH for me again neither Jackson or Boom give me a bunch of confidence but they may well be the option(s) at LT for the year.
