Steve Avila is a help block monster. The fun plays to watch in the games are where he buries the guy Alaric Jackson is pass blocking.

Jackson's footwork in his pass sets has really improved over his career.

Konata Mumpfield only caught one pass, but he worked his tail off blocking and I appreciate the effort.

Warren McClendon Jr. currently has the 3rd best run block win rate among OTs per ESPN. On the negative side, I don't trust him in true pass block sets if we have to abandon the run game and air it out. Just saying. I hope Keagan Trost can get healthy and return to action.

There is a considerable drop off in blocking from Parkinson to Davis Allen. I know we have 5 TEs, but we need either Parkinson or Higbee to be available. We can't lose both of those guys to injury.

Trost is not surplanting McClendon when healthy, not this year.. He'll be the swing tackle.

And disagree on Davis Allen. He's getting twice as many snaps as Higbee for a reason.

In a sense, Allen plays a different position than Parkinson. When the Rams put them on the same side of the formation, Allen is the TE to the outside. If the Rams use 3 TEs, Parkinson and Higbee are typically the attached Y tight ends and Allen is the one on the outside. There is a reason the Rams deploy them that way. Allen isn't as strong as Parkinson and Higbee.

IMO, if we had to slide Allen inside to Parkinson's spot, it would be akin to taking an OT and having to use him as the starting OG. Yes, the 2 players are both OL, but that doesn't mean that the OT is well suited to play on the interior.

Offense:

  • WR Davante Adams: 94.6
  • QB Matthew Stafford: 83.3
  • LT Alaric Jackson: 80.6 PB 81.2 RB 77.4
  • TE Colby Parkinson: 78.4
  • TE Davis Allen: 77.2
  • Steve Avila - 74.8 | 77.4
  • RB Blake Corum: 71.1
  • RB Kyren Williams: 70.4
  • TE Terrance Ferguson: 66.1
  • WR Tutu Atwell: 66.1
  • Kevin Dotson - 64.4 | 68.3
  • Warren McClendon - 63.6 | 66.3
  • WR Konata Mumpfield: 59.6
  • TE Tyler Higbee: 56.4
  • WR Xavier Smith: 46.1
  • Coleman Shelton - 33.0 | 74.0

Defense

  • CB Trent McDuffie: 91.0
  • DB Quentin Lake: 85.5
  • NT Poona Ford: 84.0
  • DT Tyler Davis: 81.7
  • OLB Byron Young: 77.6
  • DT Kobie Turner: 71.6
  • DT Aaron Donald: 70.3
  • LB Nate Landman: 59.8
  • OLB Josaiah Stewart: 47.2
  • CB Jaylen Watson: 46.1
  • OLB Wesley Bailey: 40.8
  • DT Braden Fiske: 39.8

Trending up the run D. Trending down special teams. Fiske needs to perform better. At this point I would say he is 50/50 to get a second contract. Poona Ford nice game after the first game performance. Most unsung and desperately needed to be that guy in the middle.
These PFF scores are always good for a few chuckles.

Shelton and Fiske this low is laughable.

LG Avila had one of the best games as a Ram last Monday. WOW!

The OL takes time to get it together, usually the last part of the team to smooth out early in the regular season. I expect Warren McClendon to come back into form. I say run the ball till the Broncos stop Corum & Williams behind RT McClendon; get him an HD workout. Rookie K. Trost lost so much time; I don't expect much from him this season.

TE Parkinson has a knee injury & DNP yesterday.

Avila looks even bigger this year. Around the waist, but still.
I'm not sure if it's my imagination but Dotson looks bigger too and even Jackson's belly looked bigger.
And the extra weight sure seemed to work well against the Giants D line.
We bullied them in the running game.

Ref OL size:
RT McClendon is by far the smallest of the 5 starters listed @ 6-4 305.

It sure appears that even our reported dinky OC is much thicker everywhere, too. Center Coleman Shelton was one up on the Giants' middle interior DL'er over him for numerous snaps & his work was exceptional.

If the TE Parkinson knee injury lingers, it will hamper the run game. He is one of the tallest, biggest starting TE's in the NFL. Over 6-7 & & looks much heavier than 270 lbs. When our RT looks to his right & see 84 next to him, he has to look up a good distance to look him in the eyes...RT McClendon is by far the smallest of the 5 starters listed @ 6-4 305. You know that Warren just feels better about the upcoming run snap.....

Rewatched the game.

Focused on Fiske. There were more then a few times he got absolutely blown out in the run game. Numerous key pressures on the pass game, so still think his PFF score is too low.

Yes, your observations explain why he had a 70.3 pass rush grade, which is good, and a 44.2 run defense grade, which is bad.

Doubt Fiske is a "re-sign" for us, will probably go the way of Greg Gaines, or we might ship him off to join his buddy in Cleveland. Obviously, Kobie is our re-sign lineman, and probably BY as well.

Like the guy, and he still has the chance to make us NEED to sign him. Let's see.

Right. Fiske is JAG.

WMcC shut down burns one on one. He is good

I wouldn't call him a JAG.
He's a good penetrator at DT, but not a run stopping fireplug.
Use him on pass downs, he's an asset IMO.
He may get stronger on an NFL regimen re run D.

BC
At 2nd Round draft pick, with a trade-up to boot to get him, he BETTER not be JAG. Still think he's got a shot to be a difference maker type, but its close.

He had one bad week where he lost points for lineup over the LOS. It was a bad penalty that shouldn't happen again. He was hurt last year and should be healed up now. I expected a good year from him. The cap hit would be costly and not save the Rams money if traded this year. It's still early in the season so he can improve.
