People blame the player for regressions but they played Goff behind perhaps the worst OL in the NFL in 2019 and he got beat to hell. He got the blame for everything and he was man enough to try to carry it even though it wasn't really his to bear. McVay didn't like his reads but WTF he held him in the huddle so long Jared had basically about 10 seconds to try to read and make adjustments. All of those unnecessary time-outs or delays of games are on McVay, not Jared. But he got the blame for it and began to get beat down by all the pressure of trying to be perfect without much help from McVay. A regression of this type almost always comes with a coaching breakdown.
The Brad Holmes was here when it was happening. If he thought Jared was lazy and unmotivated do you think they would have traded for him? No IMO Holmes saw what I saw. Now the reports coming out of Detroit are that Goff is throwing dimes, what the HC calls WOW passes. McVay was micromanaging Goff on every play. With Stafford, he doesn't have to. Now suddenly they are making the OL changes they should have made for Goff. Coincidence? McVay has no part in that? McVay gets rid of that fraud Kromer and gets a true OL coach in Carberry now that Goff is gone? Why didn't he do it in 2020 when it was clear the change needed to be made after 2019?
In 2018 Goff's breakout year his QB coach was Zak Taylor who left in 2019 to join the Bengals. Shane Waldron replaced him and somehow it's Goff being suddenly lazy and not bothering to put in the time? So it's not a coach who has never been a QB coach and a personal friend of McVay's isn't the problem? Yeah sure. Goff was great under Taylor but stunk under Waldron? Yeah sure. Now in Detroit, he's back to throwing dimes and WOWing his new HC. Uh huh.....
McVay is a great HC but to think he doesn't have his flaws is simply not true and I'm glad he's here. But that doesn't blind me to his issues. Now with Stafford, he has a plug-and-play QB. Remember in Washington Sean was an assistant and later OC so it was part of his job to oversee the QB development. As a HC he doesn't have the time though it is his responsibility to get that QB coach.
