It was not Bradford's fault the Rams offered him all that money.

Regarding Snead not understanding the team's books, it is not rocket science. I do like Snead but cap allocation is
clearly not one of his strengths.
Isn’t the cap Demoffs deal?

Isn’t the cap Demoffs deal?

Demoff advises for sure. He figures out ways to fit players within the cap. He has nothing to do with how it is allocated and who to sign.

Snead prioritized paying a running back and two receivers (Cooks and Wood). Priorities should have been elsewhere (o-line and linebacker come to mind). We are paper thin at linebacker right now. Demoff wouldn't say to Snead, "Hey Les, maybe we should allocate a little more money to linebackers." Not his responsibility.

How could you not understand capology yet build in a restructuring clause into your biggest contract? That is a very astute move and shows Snead is factoring in the future. Yeah, he knows that you can only kick that can down the road so many times before it comes due. But also he knows that cap increases will mitigate a lot of it over time. Goff is cool with it because he knows he will eventually get it all. Meanwhile, it's not like he's living on a minimum wage job.

Rams put 36 mill into Goff this year. One reason is to lessen his impact on the cap in future years. The other reason is to make it possible to walk away. When you restructure that’s becomes more difficult

Whoever writes for Rotoworld is a moron:
"Rams QB Jared Goff said he's open to restructuring his contract to create short-term cap space for the organization.
"If so, I'm all for it," Goff said on helping the team create cap room. "I don't see why not. It doesn't change anything for me, and it helps the team out." Oddly enough, Goff doesn't have any choice in the matter: Los Angeles has an option written into the 25-year-old's lucrative deal that would allow the organization to move money around freely. Given that he wouldn't take a pay cut in this (or any) scenario, it's all but assured Goff's league-high $36 million cap hit in 2020 is moved around to relieve GM Les Snead's poor understanding of the team's books. As it stands, the Rams are in the red with a league-low -$6.21 million in available cap space."

All it takes is one look at our future cap space to realize what a dipshit that writer is.

Yeah, the underlined part... the whole 2nd half of that sentence... unnecessary. You can remove it completely. Changes nothing.

Instead, IMO this shows the writer’s ignorance. He feels obliged to tell us his opinion on what Snead does or doesn’t understand? :palm:

At this point I’m assuming Floyd and Robinson still aren’t officially signed which is why the NFL isn’t forcing the Rams to make moves now. If so this whole pandemic is at least helping them in that regard. I’m curious, if a player the Rams feel will be a starter at LBer or DL drops to us if they back out of either of those contracts? Would be a real dick move but could save valuable cap room later forcing that whole Goff hit now.
Either way, they are obviously using this to their advantage and once the draft is over and they know how much cap room they’ll need for that They’ll restructure Goff for around that much. Everything they can force in now is better later.

This is why I still believe Havenstein gets moved on draft day. I think he clears up $5M in cap room.

Some team that misses out on an OT, may be willing the give up a mid round pick for him. Or maybe instead of this year, maybe a better pick in 2021 where we are real short on picks.
I have to think he'd be in play for a move up for an OT like Jones. Moving him is fine by me provided they draft an OT, or know they will in the remaining picks for depth at the least.

Regarding Snead not understanding the team's books, it is not rocket science. I am sure he understands the cap perfectly. It is cap allocation that is his issue. Paying a ton of dough to a running back and a good but not great receiver is not a way to build a championship team. The latter especially since we already were paying Woods a lot.
Maybe not. But Bradford not taking the pay cut after all the loyalty and support shown him by Fish and staff was the moment I became anti-Bradford. Fuck Scam Bustford.

Or maybe they fail one of their two new signees during his physical or otherwise weenie out of the contract.

Robinson was a nice upgrade to the run game when we thought Brock was gone. But with Brock back he might be the odd one out.

Floyd meanwhile was a signing that added more of what we have, i.e. mediocre edge rushers. He does add improvement vs the run just like Robinson does, however overall how much does he move that pass rush needle at the fucking cost of $10M in cap space? Not much IMO.

OLB is a need regardless of whether Floyd stays. And the Rams look to have some good options at the position at 52 (Okwara, Uche) not to mention after a trade down even (Anae etc). Not sure if that factors in to the Rams' decision (they might have signed Floyd to shut their new DC up while they draft offensive skill position players in round 2 lol) but it might influence things.

If I had to lay money one way or the other... I'd guess they weenie out of Robinson's contract because OLB has more question marks overall and as expensive as Floyd was he does at least improve the talent level a bit.

Yes, he needs to be replaced with a guy capable of competing for the LT spot next year. We have enough RT candidates.

I don't understand people saying the salary cap is no concern. That it can easily be manipulated. If that were the case Littleton, Fowler, Greg Z and NRC at least would still be rams.

Fowler wanted more than the Ram's wanted to pay for him. Fowler wanted to be paid like a top DE, not an OLB. He also showed last year how limited he was, i.e. when asked to drop into coverage he struggled. This limit's the DC's ability to disguise the rush as the offense isn't completely certain who would be coming and who dropping. In that regard, Samson has shown himself to be an outstanding SAM, the best on the team. With Floyd not only do they save money but gain a more versatile player capable of a high-level rush, and still able to drop into coverage.

Littleton is like Fowler a much too limited player to allow the DC to disguise rush and coverages. He lacks the speed to play anything except zone. It was clear to me from his struggles in man coverages that they probably would allow him to walk. Again it was a matter of cost and reward. With Young, Kiser, Howard, and Reeder they have excellent speed and versatility at ILB. More than they have had perhaps ever. Offenses won't know if the coverage is zone or man so early down passes are not a foregone conclusion. Littleton is a good ILB but limited in how he can be used.

NRC showed in the NFC Championship game why they didn't exercise his option. He's undisciplined and is more concerned with making a splash play than playing the scheme. No DC will tolerate that except perhaps Phillips and most would have benched him in 2018. If you can't trust your DB to play the scheme no matter how good he is, you can't play him. NRC thinks he's better than he is. Williams clearly outplayed him last year. I expect Darious Williams to be penciled in as the slot CB this year and think he will be just fine.

Personally I like the moves or at least understand them. I'm sure the Ram's would have worked around Dante's limitations but not at the price he was expecting.

Couldn't agree more, I've been saying this for months and surprised he hasn't been traded yet. He was a liability last year and got outplayed by a rookie. I think we should save the cap space and roll with Evans if we can.

If all true then he has zero tradevalue

Im not worried about it. I think we find a way to keep Brockers, Floyd and Robinson. I trust the Rams have a plan to stay competitive.

Havenstein was very good in 2018 and solid if unspectacular in 2015 through 2017. Not sure what happened to him last season. I’m not ready to move him for a sixth round pick and turn over ROT to Evans or a rookie.

Nah, some teams are trainwrecks on their oline and if they miss out on an OT, they will jump at a solid vet who has had good yrs and is still under 30.

Yes he had a horrible season last yr, and was replaced by a rookie who played decent and deserves more starts. Combine that with his cap hit and it makes sense that we move on. But he played pretty well for 3-4 years prior to last year so we should be able to net a mid to late round pick I would guess. Hav is about to turn 28 so should still generate interest.
