I felt less clear about your point regarding Gurley and had he hypothetically signed for 9M instead of 5M. Can u spell it out more for us cap-challenged mortals?

What has to be added in is maybe 5 mill for the rookie class and another mil to operate in 2020. So basically we are 12 million in the hole. That is more than just restructuring Goff. Not to mention if we restructure we are borrowing from 2021. I think one high price veteran (Robinson) gets the axe.

Cap is only counting the top 51 salaries so that part in regards to number of players signed, is meaningless.

The good thing is they are in good cap shape for 21'. That is what this is all about. Spotrac has them at $65M and that includes Whitworth who likely won't be back. Also Brockers & or Robinson can easily be moved on from as well.

So they could be in the $80M range.

If they can put together a good draft, then they are in a great position to extend their star players like Kupp, Ramsey, & Johnson.... Maybe even one of Everett or Reynolds. And they could still be FA players next year.

He got hurt in 2018. And last year...again, maybe he has some health issues, but it didn't really look like it when he was on the field. What it looked like was he was never handed the ball enough to get a rhythm, the O-line failed to get him *any* holes, and McVay's game planning took a major step back (as did his unwillingness to adjust to game conditions). Everyone said Peterson was washed up when he got shipped out of MN, too, and look what happened there.

Rhythm had nothing to do with it. Gurley's acceleration wasn't there nor his ability to make tacklers miss. He turned into a better version of Malcolm Brown. He ran downhill, hard and bounced into tackles until he was down. That's not what he was prior to his injury.

IMO this was as big a factor as the money. The Rams' use of Gurley last year seems to have been mishandled at every step from offseason training to failure to use him in the red zone. Gurley was really steamed at how it went down, perhaps dating back to the 2018 playoffs and Super Bowl. Don't think the relationship was fixable.

Personally I think the moves with Gurley and Cooks had more to do with future injuries and long term health outlook. I think it's clear that the Rams were very concerned about Cooks' concussion history. Likewise, I think they were equally concerned about Gurley's long term knee health. IMO those were the driving factors in the release and trade. Cooks was one severe concussion from being a career ender considering his previous history. If Gurley's knee is indeed degenerative then his release would also make sense. As far as they being over the cap there are plenty of ways to mitigate that. Right now the biggest impediment is Havenstein's bloated contract. Without that they would actually be in the black in terms of cap.

NFL teams use accounting trickery to beat the cap. Salary cap management in the NFL is a game played by rules that few people really understand.

I agree. Them cutting him means some BS was probably going on behind the scenes. Not necessarily high drama but enough hard feelings for the Rams to say F it.

But..He kind of did.

Here... I’ve stacked the last 3 seasons. He went from “green” to “red” suddenly, using 4.0 YPC as line.

4 of the 5 final “green” his total yards were under 100.

There is a cliff. And it’s around the KC game where we saw him tackled out of bounds hard.

Agreed, we have a lot of dead cap money in 2020 so we can have room to work with for 2021 and beyond

And you are right. I've rewatched that game a few times, and I cringe every time I see that.
The "dragged down from behind" tackle is a killer.

I don't understand people saying the salary cap is no concern. That it can easily be manipulated. If that were the case Littleton, Fowler, Greg Z and NRC at least would still be rams.

As the years go by so much of the cap rules just seem unfair.

You get dinged heavy for bad luck to injury? You trade a player and you still have debt to pay?

I don't know. The cap just seems like it is just a big ass roll of the dice.

Gurley and Cooks dead money isn't really an issue. More than likely they could replace the production they would have had this season with two minimum wage players.

Both did not have a big impact last season and probably wouldn't have his season.

I was so glad when they changed the Rookie contract rules. No longer do you have to pay 80 plus million to a potential bust

However, it is now biased towards ownership since they can keep a rookie on his contract for 4 years (plus 5th year option if 1st round pick) or get rid of him after 1 year without I think too much of a penalty. I am not 100% sure of this so if someone can explain the Rookie guarantees better I would appreciate it.

That's why I wasn't too upset with Gurley getting his money and then getting injured because he more than earned his money during his Rookie contract (excluding the middle school offense year).

I really don't have an answer though since if they make it maybe two or three years and then free agent, you will see teams losing out on players just when they are getting good. Seems like it takes 2 to 3 years for most players to come into their own.

There is a strategy that if you can eat as much of this contract this year... it helps the cap the rest of Goff’s deal. He will be considered cheap in 2 years.

The hit drops to $32M in 2021, then $30M, $30M, $26M.

When Goff is in his prime, we will have good cap space to support him and enjoy that ride.

This is why I still believe Havenstein gets moved on draft day. I think he clears up $5M in cap room.

Some team that misses out on an OT, may be willing the give up a mid round pick for him. Or maybe instead of this year, maybe a better pick in 2021 where we are real short on picks.
