It's been reported that McVay has had a man-crush on Cooks since he entered the draft, and all Cooks has done has been gaining 1000 + yards every year since he came into the NFL (unlike Watkins)
To be fair Cooks had hall of Famers throwing to him too

IMO the biggest thing with this signing is it gives the team more leverage with AD. They can now say something like “Which do you want a franchise tag for $15 million for a couple years or do you want a 6 year deal for $22 million a year with 2/3 of it guaranteed?” This could be huge for us fans to get Cooks and AD signed before preseason.
You're right, Donald and his agent doesn't have any leverage for three years. So if Donald wants to guarantee that he is going to be one of the highest paid defensive players, let alone the highest paid defensive player, he'd better sign an extension soon, or he could risk playing at a much lower pay grade as a franchise player for two years after this season is done..

So basically, the Rams signed Cooks for Watkins $$ (starting NEXT year) sight unseen. What will be the reaction if Cooks puts up #s somewhere BETWEEN his yearly averages and Watkins' #s from last season?

I see this as a realistic scenario when you consider Cooks will be splitting targets with Kupp, Woods, and our TE duo. There's also a guy named Gurley who had the second most receptions last year and will be getting a lot of carries.

At the very least, the Rams have to make the playoffs, and Cooks' have to be better than Watkins' were, not to mention Donald has got to get a new deal.

It ain't my money. I don't care what numbers Cooks puts up if our offense continues to dominate and we continue to win.

Because he is not a free agent yet, that's the main reason. Plus Im not certain he is better.

If you look at on field production and injury history, it's pretty easy to identify Cooks as the better player. Sammy's physical traits and college production are what get you excited. Truth is he's never lived up to his draft hype in the NFL.

Looking at what they provide off the field I think solidifies Cooks as the better player. His leadership, mindset, and overall team first mentality is far beyond Watkins IMO. When I watched the Behind the Grind episode I saw everything I needed to see.

So glad we got this done. Can't wait to see Goff to B Cooks.

@LACHAMP46 I guess this settles our bet. I’ll let @flv decide
The bet was that Cooks would get more annual than Watkins, 16 mill. And Cooks also got 16 mill but for 2 more years.
So I guess I lose... but the Rams won!

Pretty sure @LACHAMP46 isn't a member here anymore.

It's a push

Cooks career numbers towers that of Watkins.

Cooks has great numbers, looks great on paper. I watched most of his games last year and I didn’t see a player who was a difference maker outside of about 3 games.

I like the player, not crazy about the deal. Should he be paid like a top 5 Wr?

Will be surprised if Cooks racks up 1000 yards this season; only way I can see that happening is if Goff has a 5000 yard season.

Fair points. Can’t disagree with any of your points.
