Rams DB Cobie Durant Blossoming into Leadership Role

Los Angeles Rams defensive back may be entering just his second NFL season, but he is already becoming a leader in the secondary.

Given the state of the Rams' secondary, a young player like Durant had to step up. With Jalen Ramsey and other key players departing this offseason, the unit is severely lacking in experience. In fact, Durant is already the fourth-most-experienced member of the secondary with just 13 games played, trailing only cornerback Robert Rochell (28) and safeties Jordan Fuller (31) and Russ Yeast (15).

Even though he's still learning himself, Durant is more than comfortable stepping up as a leader.

"We're going to compete at a high level," Durant said via the Rams' website. "We got each other's backs. Jalen's gone, David Long's gone, Troy [Hill]'s gone, Taylor Rapp, Nick Scott, all those guys. So we're young in the back end, but we got some ballers back there and we just drafted some more guys. It's a great opportunity for us to step up and show the league what we got.

A fourth-round pick in 2022, Durant had an impressive showing in his rookie season. In 13 games, he had five passes defended and three interceptions, one behind Ramsey for the team lead. With so many losses in the secondary, the Rams will be counting on Durant to build on his success in a bigger role.

A year ago, Durant was a fresh draftee and just getting accustomed to life with the Rams. Now, he's one of the leaders for a key part of the defense. Goes to show how quickly time passes in the NFL.

Was really impressed by Durant last season. Sure, he made mistakes but who doesn’t? His leadership qualities and hardworking attitude should stand him in good stead this year and I really believe he could make the breakthrough and become a more widely recognised player.

Yeah he showed a LOT of promise as a rookie, didn’t he? It will be exciting to watch him develop as an NFL player. Year 2 can be a big step.

You don't become a leader until you get it done on the field consistently. Sorry.

I have a feeling our secondary is going to be very good. Ramsey was acquired to fit the Phillips man scheme. This secondary is built now to play our zone heavy scheme.

I have very high hopes for him. Figure he'll be a shutdown guy on most wideouts. Maybe he'll struggle vs the bigger types, like say Metcalf. That's what we're gonna lose with Ramsey is that physicality. But if Durant and Tomlinson can give us two good corners we'll be solid and competitive and that's my hope. Not gonna hope for more than that.

One of the easiest ways to evaluate a team's pass defense is to look at the QB performance against. In that regard we were 19th last season, due to low pressure rates up front and poor coverage on the back end:

So the key question here in my mind is to what extent do these draft picks compensate for what we lost up front.

Subtracting Floyd hurts our rush but the biggest loss is probably in the run game. Other than that we should have more actual rush talent on the depth chart. So it follows that the key for this group is one player giving us actual starter level production. Best option for that is Young but there is room for that to happen and us to be better off on the edge due to better depth. Bigger rotation of edge options should equal more pressures over a full season's snaps. Thus my guess is we'll suffer a slight dip in pressures to somewhere around the same, but I also expect a bigger decrease in contain vs the run.

The interesting change though from last season to this season is at DL. Rams lost two 1T types who were good vs the run and did not replace them. The DL they brought in are guys with some shakes to them on the interior, with more 3T skills than 1T. Snead mentioned they wanted to pair AD with another interior rush threat in their pass down fronts, and you can see that I think in the picks. So the Rams either expect the offense to be explosive and putting opponents down early, so they can pin their ears back, or they simply prioritized the pass defense and welp you can't fix everything in one offseason. Guessing it was the latter.

Obvious concern for an oldschool mentality type like me is that we might get gashed hard on the ground. But maybe that doesn't matter. We're gonna find out quickly too because we face what I think will be two of the best run games in the NFL in the first two games, both being divisional matchups as well.

Dammit accidentally clicked the post before I was done hammering you guys with text.

The other element is of course the back end. But I actually like what they've done with the corners. I think we're stronger in our top two corners right now than we were last season. Would have been nice to add another one in the draft but we had a ton of needs. If Durant emerges the way I think he will we might be better on that back end than we were last season. That secondary was a circus last year, and it was iffy as F even in the title season the year before, at least up until Von came online. Our rush masked a ton of issues on that back end that got exposed last season.

So a big key I think is going to be the safeties. They were pretty poor last season, very inconsistent and part of that was we had meathead SS types playing way too many snaps. This season we should get Fuller back, and whatever you might think of him he's better than what we had last season. Which means we need one safety to step up in that pairing. Not sure if that's gonna happen, I mean anything's possible but if you look at the secondary overall I expect they'll be better this year than they have been in spite of losing Ramsey.

And the combination of being stronger 2 deep at corner plus getting Fuller back means we might see a slight uptick in our pass defense to the tune of maybe being more middle of the pack than down there by that bottom third in QB rating against. Key is going to be whether the run game is too big a weakness. If it is then it will undermine the pass defense.

Hilarious thread topic for a rookie who played a whopping 5 games and now is thrust into being CB 1 the secondary as a whole imo will be extremely awful I literally have zero confidence in any of them and the secondary includes the safeties as well.

There's definitely a negative way to see it. But I'm confident we're gonna have two corners who are good players out there on the field. Size is an issue or will be to some extent. Physicality maybe too. But we'll have two guys out there heads up and playing the ball. So that third CB role is gonna be the key, that and the safeties.

In some combination we need improvement in coverage and rush to be a better defense than we were last season vs the pass. It's hard to say what each phase will produce too because we did subtract players. But the pass defense to me feels like it got all the focus in the draft so it's probably gonna break even or thereabouts and have upside.

It's the run defense that people should be alarmed about. IMO. Because two quality NTs went out the door and we have Brown and some young 3T types poised to serve in those roles.

The concerns about the DL and run game are well placed and only amplify my worries about Durant and another small corner. These guys are going to be forced to attempt to make tackles and Durant is an awful tackler... so bad that I fear he'll end up hurt much sooner than later.
No solid edge protection in the run game is gonna get them run over.. repeatedly, I think.

2023 is a throwaway season. A season where they find who can be serviceable starters and who can't. Who can be serviceable rotation players. Durant has potential to be pretty good. He needs more experience. Kendrick had his issues. But he probably was thrown out there too soon. He was a 6th round pick for Christ's sake. He's gonna need more time. He might be better this year.

The rookies have a shot at seeing playing time. It all adds up to who will be contributing in 2024 and beyond. They will be in position to sign decent free agents to fill the gaps. Enjoy 2023 for what it is. A chance to see who will grow into nice NFL players. Maybe we will surprise. Maybe not. But try not to get too worked up if they don't. Aside from 3 good to great players this roster is not considered a good one.

What sucks is because of Arizona we're not likely to have a last place schedule next year.

Another example of the Rams purposely drafting smart leader type of players.

I can't forget that the 49ers went to a Super Bowl with two rookie Corners STARTING.
