Trying to figure just how this MR53 & the PS will be reworked.

OLB'er has Floyd/ Lewis/ Garrett & now newly acquired Jamir Jones from the WWC line. Lewis is not operating @ full capacity, dealing with a damaged ankle.

Terrell Lewis has been on a limited snaps count since the season began, barely a part-timer for the last two games other than that he has contributed little due to that injury to Hollins last week. Hope that the damaged knee remains quiet. :hope:

Chris Garrett fresh off covid 19 is fully healthy so he should be ready for a serious dose of snaps @ weakside OLB'er for Hollins with help from the governor'd gimpy Lewis.

MLB Troy Reeder can easily back up Floyd if needed & has 2 past starting seasons worth of NFL game experience to not be utilized.

New OLB Jamir Jones might get in several last 4th quarter pass-rushing snaps but I would not expect too much from him.

McVay could bring up Floyd's backup PS Justin Lawler again but he would have exhausted his 3-time call-up from PS event & assigned to take an MR53 spot thus a Ram player would have to be cut. If it were me I trade RT Evans for a future draft pick & open up his MR53 spot.

Og Okoronkwo might be activated but I think it's way too early Og needs time back practicing with the defense before he should get a heavy dose of Card QB Kyler Murray. Lawler has no such concerns if he can play with pain & a club.

Lewis had 30+ snaps in this game.. that's actually probably too many for him. Disagree on not contributing when he's on the field.
Reeder is not going to backup Floyd.
I'd think Jones is behind Garrett at this point, but the two are kind of similar in athleticism and size. If nothing else, he should be able to rush a passer when other edges are gassed from chasing Murray around.
I think Lawler stays down with the still-recovering hand.
Obo will be active. I just don't see any way around that. They need bodies on the edge.

Hollins wasn't just a player.. he was in for 75% of the snaps. That's a lot to make up for.

No. Tomlin has established himself as one of the best coaches. It would probably take multiple back to back losing seasons for him to go on the hot seat.

Well the way I see it is Lawler still has a broken hand,OBO is still not ready to comeback from Reggie’s time line he had set.
The Rams had an opportunity to pick up a player(position) of need.Yes Garrett is back which actually works out perfect for him.He had his first NFL snaps last week.He got a taste & a feel for the game. Now he has a little game film he can cut up!
Floyd & Lewis should both be fine.Floyd imo played really well the last couple weeks.Carson & Brady both got away from being sacked from him.
Lewis from Mcvay say he just got the most snaps he has ever had as a Ram against Tampa. They want to keep his Reps to around 30,which is about half.
#96 Hoecht had a few more snaps last week than I expected.I think they like the intensity he brings.

I think we could see some interesting rush groups because of Murray. Who knows.. Rapp may be rushing the passer a ton this week. I just don't think you can have a an oversized edge in against them.. makes it too easy for him to scramble.

So OBO will be activated? I know McVay said he is almost ready, but we’ll see. That makes me think he won’t be on the game day after this Jones signing. Then again that is just my guess & reasoning.
Reeder is the MLB & Hollins & Lewis have been moving into that spot rather than coming off the field.I wonder if that is because the offenses aren’t making personnel changes during plays?
I look forward to Garrett getting some nice playing time,to see how he looks. He had an excellent preseason.

I think that dropping Hollins and Lewis is more about disguising their rush and coverage plan. Hollins really thrives in space for a guy his size and we saw what Lewis could do to a guy on a crossing route.
I assume Obo is active. You have to have bodies that can run on the edge when you play the Cards.

At the very least this guy looks like he's going to help us on teams. Also I love that he's got a couple years under the Steelers staff, they know how to coach the LB position.

Steelers have to be irritated by this. Losing Roche was crazy, I know the guy was a 6th rounder but there isn't a team in the league that doesn't see his upside so thinking he'd get through waivers is kind of funny.

By the way re: Tomlin the Steelers are one of the most stable teams in the league in staying the course with their head coaches so no he's not in trouble. Also bleeding fringe talent like this is more of an indicator of the GM position. They're supposed to be the guys who have the feel for who will/won't clear waivers and the roster building side of things.

Tough injury and tough matchup for Rams this week where contain by OLB's will be at a premium. Hard for young guys to have the discipline and skill to do. Additionally, think Cards do no huddle a lot so whomever is out there at Hollins spot won't be able to sub out so easily.

Think @oldnotdead or someone said this but I would expect to see more 4-3 fronts this week because of lack of subs, perhaps in general going forward where guys like Williams and Hoecht can take some snaps that would normally go to an OLB.

Intrigued by the idea of Reeder on the edge but I'm not sure that's doable other than in a specialized rush role. What we need is someone who can play the early downs at OLB and I expect Lewis to be on a pitch count like last week going forward. (With Cards running no huddle, do you risk putting him out there and then him having to stay out there forever??) Regardless, the hope going forward is that by the time the wheels fall off on Lewis this season (we may just play him into the ground to win a SB), Hollins will be near coming back and/or Garrett will have his legs under him and someone like Jones will have picked up the playbook.

Let's run this down;

Leonard Floyd
Terrell Lewis
Chris Garrett
Justin Hollins
Justin Lawler
Okoronkwo

...and now Jamir Jones.

This seems like a REALLY strong group of pass-rush pressure potential.

Really strong when you think of the inside pressure that is going to disrupt the offense as well.

AD99 was lining up way wide of the RT at least one time.Let’s see what players get scratched for Sunday, unless you think all these guys play? Jones might not be on the game day roster?

Uhhh...Yeah.... I think they're all going to play.

Even Hollins.

We are going to go with a OLB pass rush only defensive line and deactivate the defensive tackles Sunday.

  • NFL body type with a frame that should continue to fill out
  • Praised for football IQ and attention to assignments
  • Hips are fluid and feet are athletic
  • Takes wide, lateral steps to beat reach blocks for play-side contain
  • Well-schooled with his stack-and-shed technique
  • Could become bigger factor in twist game as rusher
  • Pass rush is raw but flashes necessary movement traits
  • Good bend to slide around the edge at the top of the rush
  • ******************************************************************************************************
Looks like a good fit. Maybe his high IQ allows him to contribute soon.
Can't be a slow learner and play in this scheme.

I really like this kid. Big, fast, and athletic. He has also flashed in the limited action he has seen. Outstanding pickup by Snead (I hope).

Well FWIW, Steeler fans think Jones didn't play that well when given a chance the last 2 games. I was kinda hoping they'd be howling with disappointment, but no.

Wouldn't put too much into the fans thoughts.
He shined big time in the preseason and is full of potential.
If Les liked him enough to steal him from the Steelers.
Than I gotta believe we stole a young guy who is full of potential
and now has a coaching staff that will turn that potential into reality.

Not assuming Pittsburgh wanted or expected to lose Jamir Jones.

Guessing that the Steelers intended to move Jones to their Practice Squad. However, rules require that he first has to be released and clear waivers.

The Rams got Jones on a waiver claim. The Rams.

Waiver claims are based on worst record priority. If the Rams got him, that means few ... if any other ... teams put in a claim.

If it's the current NFL records, then none of the 28 teams with a loss, put in a claim.

If it's too early in 2021 to go by current records for waiver priority, then none of the teams (about 22 or 24) with fewer than ten wins in 2020, put in a claim on Jones.

Just trying to make the point that Pittsburgh's strategy to retain Jamir Jones on its PS, may have been ruined by just one team ... the Rams,

It's was a rough 11-0, though. I used to watch the games at a Steelers bar and they were dead quite last season until the 2nd half of almost every game. They won alot of games but they weren't pretty.

Team went after a star draft pick at RB then trying to do anything to shore up offensive line. It's gonna be ugly, don't think Ben lasts the year.
