Rams hold Dolphins to under 100 yards passing and under 60 yards rushing
1604426407950.png

I had to double check the Pro-Football-Reference tool several times to make sure that I hadn’t made a mistake. Then I had found out that I did make a mistake, but then even undoing that mistake, the result was the same: the LA Rams have done something twice that no other team has done once yet in 2020.Despite their 28-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 8, the Rams held Miami to only 90 yards passing and 55 yards rushing. The Dolphins didn’t have a drive longer than 33 yards and they punted on all six drives in the second half. Miami’s longest drive after the first quarter was 27 yards and nine of their drives went for single digits.

The Rams may have benefited from the inexperience by debut starter Tua Tagovailoa, who went 12 of 22 for 93 yards with one touchdown and one fumble lost. Running back Myles Gaskin carried it 18 times for 47 yards and he tied as the Dolphins leading receiver with 16 yards. There is no other team in the NFL that has held an opponent to under 100 passing yards and under 80 rushing yards in the same game this season. Except for the LA Rams.

In Alex Smith’s return to the field for Washington Football Team, the Rams held them to 70 yards passing and 38 yards rushing. Smith gained only 37 yards on 17 pass attempts in relief of Kyle Allen and rookie Antonio Gibson had 27 rushing yards on 11 carries. J.D. McKissic was the leading receiver with 46 yards.Jalen Ramsey played a full slate in that game and was not targeted once, but missed most of Week 8’s loss in Miami with an illness.

The Rams are now third in points allowed per game, second in yards allowed, second in passing yards allowed and first in net yards per pass attempt allowed. They are also sixth in yards per carry allowed and also held the Chicago Bears to only 49 rushing yards in Week 7. It wasn’t that long ago that LA had a decisive win against a winning team.

It also wasn’t that long ago since their last dominant performance on defense, a bright side to a poor outcome.

And McVay should accept that this is the identity going forward. We are a defensive team that runs the ball and has some good talent in the passing game that can burn you if you sell out to stop the run. We may not score 30+ points every time and put chunk passing play highlights up as much as 2017 and 2018, but we can win this way.

Played sloppy. Yes. Blew a chance for a relatively easy win. Yes. Got blown out. You obviously were not watching the game objectively.

it was 28 10 until garbage time and we had 4 turnovers.
the offense definitely got blown out.

not true, Rams beat themselves and with 5 minutes left their was still a chance to win
train

Yep. If Forbath hits that gimme, we're down 8 with plenty of time and time outs and Goff was on a 9 completion streak and their O couldn't move.
Through all of the other problems, a person can point to a couple drops and a missed kick as the difference between an UGLY win, and the 28-17 final.

Have been very impressed with how Staley has affected this D. Even in the games they play a bad half, they've responded well in the next half which shows great coaching adjustments. But this game was even more impressive because we didn't have Ramsey, A'shawn, Fuller, Obo. Sucks we lost Burgess but if we can get these four guys back and starting this D should improve even more which is hard to imagine.

This is why ultimately I am hopeful the Rams can get into the playoffs and maybe make a run. No one in the NFC is dominant this year and the Rams have one of the top defenses in the league.

We can play D, we can run the ball and its entirely possible we can pass it again too.

We should make the playoffs.

Kiser is a player at MLB.

Love Ramsey's "put them on their ass" plays.

Floyd has been solid and I am pleased to see new faces in the other ER spot.

Hopefully, the recent FA additon at NT can step in soon and present opposing offenses with an extremely large and powerful defender in the middle.

This offense (Hello, McVay and Goff) will require a Herculean effort by the D to prevail against a top tier opponent.

RE: Historical games

... We still have Robinson coming back. :horns:

He was inactive in Miami.

But... Our next 4 matchups feature 4 top 10 offenses; Seattle, Tampa, Arizona, San Fran. So, big test for the D coming up!

After the bye.....Staley should have DL'er A'Shawn Robinson, Strong Safety Jordan Fuller & Edge Rusher Terrell Lewis fully ready to play enormous major roles in upgrading his defense over the 2nd half of this season. Those three defenders will be key elements to raise the power dynamics of this team. I feel strongly that this defense can lead the way into the playoffs despite the McVay/Goff brainfarts.

Our four corners(Ramsey/ Williams/ Hill/ Long) & four safeties(Fuller/JJIII/Rapp/Scott) are the best 8 in the NFC. The DL (Donald/ Robinson/ Brockers/ SJD/ Fox & Gaines) should also be very strong. I also feel very comfortable with both LB'er units & if we can cover up the McVay/Goff :poop: well enough we can ride the defense back into the playoffs. Where we might get lucky to get OLB'er Og Okoronkwo back off IR.

Would be nice to see this thread not derail into another offensive thread. Just sayin. :beer2:

This unit has by far exceeded expectations. I keep waiting for them to normalize but they seem to be getting better.

I expect they will have a poor game or two but they are going to get Fuller back and Robinson may also give them a boost. As things stand right now we are a contender because of them. Impressive as hell to me and I think Staley is gonna be a hot interview in the playoffs.

I know this was intended to help prove the Rams had a chance in that game. Good on you.

But......your synopsis has also triggered some post traumatic stress. I was just starting to heal.

Unintended! Just more of a perspective of how even in a total shit show, our defense gave us a chance. STs and the O weren't helping.

Much, much better. The high level summary didn't cause me to twitch as much.

This is and will be the best defense we've had since 2001 I think.

BUT - it is worth mentioning that they're probably due for some regression.

Dak/Wentz/Allen/Jones/Allen/Jimmy/Foles/Tua is a rough group - Dak and J Allen were good, Jimmy average and the other five are bad QBs.

In the second half we have the opposite - three bad QBs and five good/great (counting Murray and Wilson twice).

The offense will need to pick up the slack against Seattle and AZ and I suspect they will.

So of the three competent offenses we played, we had two awful halves, two average halves and two excellent halves, which is about average for an above average d - if that makes sense.
