I felt the same way on this until I heard Snead's interview yesterday. He said one of the considerations that tilted them towards selecting him was, "Oh, by the way, we do a QB2." That sounds like in their minds, he could contribute this year.

Sounds like what McVay said about Simpson and Bennett fighting it out for QB2 is the plan.

Three comments after reading 82 pages... the first is that I believe the Rams will sign an experienced QB to get them thru the season. Maybe Tyrod Taylor, but the team cannot count on Simpson or Bennett to carry them for a few games unless one of them balls out during preseason.

I get Simpson needs some seasoning but if he can't lead us to 2-2 if Stafford misses 4 games than we've got some real issues going forward.

If one of Adams or Puka is still healthy, a rookie WR can still certainly contribute. You wouldn't want the whole offense running through them unless that WR is a sure fired stud. Those are pretty rare but then again, Puka opened my eyes up that anyone can surprise us. I'm not saying anything about having drafted one, just saying there's no way to ever know if some unknown WR is gonna make a name for himself that no one saw coming. We got very lucky with Puka on that end. Can't imagine where'd we be at WR wise without him.

And the thing about McVay not playing rookies - he has had only one first round rookie ever.

And that was Verse - and guess what he played a lot.

I think a first round rookie would play a lot most of the time. This year's lot... maybe not.

Unless it was Lemon (who looks like he might have an attitude after a couple years - wouldn't want him for that), maybe Cooper or Boston, plus I liked Bain a lot.

No freak-outs from me about Simpson til Year 2 minimum.

I wasnt here in 2016, but I'm wiling to bet the HYSTERIA was off the charts during Jared Goff's 0-7 start to his career.

Simpson starts as QB3...? Yawn...

McVay always defers to experience when it comes to rookie offensive players. Exceptions are Kupp and Puka. For anyone to come to a judgement on Simpson if he isn't the #2 it will be a mistake. We will have to be patient with this situation.

Rams lost a couple games, but they scored 37, 24, and 37 points, respectively, without Adams. Defense and special teams were the issue.

Interestingly enough they scored 35 points in the game without Puka.

Yeah but Adams makes a difference. He was on a tear in the redzone. Could have been the difference in making sure we hosted the playoffs vs being on the road. Aw well, water under the bridge.

not sure about all the hedging with regards to simpson....

some (not all) talking heads were rating him ABOVE mendosa before the rib issue (game 8 or 9 ?)
and predicted he would go #1 instead of mendosa...

i have seen tape breakdowns of simpson by a few nfl talking heads showing he was

looking off receiver's...
baiting corners/safeties...
throwing no look passes (where have i heard that before?)...
and puting on a show when it comes to protection breakdowns...

If you look around the league, many of the 1st round picks don't immediately start or play a lot of the time. (Not to mention that about 50% of them bust.) Every year fans are cautioned to temper their expectations.

Top 15 selections typically go to talent deprived teams bad enough to earn top 15 selections.

Still my guess is many are given starting jobs they haven't earned for on the job training simply because of said team's investment.

Also there are differences in the quality of draft classes.

Either way this sorta reminds me of a part of the need filling discussion that occurs every year. Most rookies may fill a position with a body that takes up snaps, but aren't really making much of an actual impact. And rarely that much over and above what an experience veteran minus the 1st round hoopla could muster.

Never looked at that. You're probably right.

Counter point: the top 15 teams are typically the 15 worst teams. It's almost unprecedented for a top 4 team, which means it's a stacked team, to have a top 15 pick.
